This is a variation of Kingzrool's IPOD Singles Draft from last year.

You got off the island last year and spent the fall, winter, and spring back at home with family and loved ones. Unfortunately, the fates once again grabbed you right out of your happy surroundings and plopped you down on your good old island. Looking around, everything is replenished ... with one glaring omission: Your IPOD, the one you had last year, is still here but the songs are gone. There's room for 30 songs but it's been programmed so you can only have 10 songs from the 70s, 10 songs from the 80s and 10 songs from the 90s. Because of time constraints, the number of songs has been revised to be 24 total, with 8 in each decade.

We'll do a straight draft - not serpentine - after the randomizer determines the order. I want as few rules as possible, other than the decade limitations. I may follow GoGoGadget's lead and appoint an arbiter to determine any selection disputes.

Picks will be made with the 18-hour clock, with a PM sent to the next person on the list as soon as you've made your pick. If you think you might be off the board when your pick comes up, please either send a PM to the commissioner to let me know OR have someone else make your pick.

Draft order:
1. D-Mass
2. Jerryaki
3. ryanandty
4. Kingsgirl4
5. Jespher
6. LPKingsFan
7. LoungeLizard
8. SacKings7
9. Kingzrool
10. Francisco d'Anconia
11. VF21
12. Capt. Factorial
13. Mr. S£im Citrus
14. NoBonus

When you post your pick, please also post a link to the song as listed at www.allmusic.com, which will be the official reference as to release dates for purpose of this draft. (If there is a problem in locating the song at allmusic.com, please link to Wikipedia or another site that will confirm when the song was released.) In addition, please indicate which decade for which the pick is being made...

Thanks all!

Looking at my list I was wondering if we going strictly by release dates? What's the cutoff? Could a song be drafted if it was released late in 1969, but widely listened to throughout the 70s?

Also, if a song was released in 1979 is it a 70s or 80s song (it was probably listened to much more in the 80s than the 70s...)?

Going by release date prevents a lot of problems/interpretations. And it's factual. Therefore, the song must have been released during the 70s for the 70s picks, during the 80s for the 80s picks and during the 90s for the 90s picks. I really don't think there will be that many songs that fall through the cracks but if they do, they fall through the same cracks for everyone.

:)

ryanandty - Since you weren't on the island last year, you'll be able to virtually take your pick of any of the virtual spots left by those who did participate last year but aren't returning for this year's fun. :p

I am in.... We will see how it goes. I have a feeling VF21 and I will have a lot of the same favorites from the 1970's since we were in the same house! :D

Neutral observer chiming in, but I have a few follow up questions I think you should answer before the start of the draft because I guarantee they will come up:

Are you going by original release date on an album, release date as a single, whichever was first or either/or? Depending on that answer what about singles that were released multiple times. Some early rock artists even re-recorded classic hits in the 80s so that they could get royalties on them, since these are all new recordings are they fair game if the others are not?

Also since the title is "singles draft" are the drafters limited to actually picking songs released as singles or can you pick album only tracks? What about B-sides?

Some of you sure read way too much into these things...

;)

Release date means release date. If you pick the Nerds "I Wish I Lived on Pluto," released as a single on March 1, 1974, then that's one of your 70s picks. If you pick the 3 hour version, released as part of their album "Soaring through the Solar System" on April 1, 1980, then that would be an 80s pick. Once the title/artist has been selected, different versions of the same song are ineligible.

I don't want to make a lot of rules and restrictions ahead of time. Basically, you cannot pick a title/artist if the same title by the same artist has already been selected by someone else.

As far as B sides go, those are separate songs. If you're picking the above-mentioned Nerds hit, for example, someone would still be able to pick the B side, "Astride the Asteroids"...

:)

It won't start until after the TV Show draft... which won't start until the playoffs start for either the Pain and Misery thread OR the movie thread.

So basically we'll start about the time the Kings are celebrating their third consecutive NBA title! Sounds good to me! ;)

Close...The TV draft will be starting within the week, I'm sure, and this one will start as soon as one of the others goes into "post-season" draft threadwise.

I guess I will be part of this since it is a spin off of my thread. I will be on vacation in October, so I may pull out if the timing is wrong.

I'm not locked in to the 16 participant requirement. I would like to see at least a few more people, though...

Question for those who have signed up:

We seem to stalled at 8 participants. Do you want to go ahead and start the draft with the 8 of us or wait for more people or forget it all together?

I bet if we start we'll entice more members to join the draft. I say let's get going, and more can join later on :).

Hmmm..... I remember being asked if I would join the super hero draft. Maybe we could pull some people in that way. I think some people are waiting to jump on because they misunderstand "start right after the TV draft." They may not be worried about signing up because they think they have until the end of that draft to do so.

I am down for a little longer wait if that's what we need.

As a Side note:

Don't be scared to join: these are really quite easy to stay on top of. I was skeptical at first too; the TV show draft is my first, and I figure I could probably handle 3 of these at a time.

VERY good point! I meant we'd be next in line to start after the TV Show draft but I can see what you mean. I've changed the wording...

Alright I'll participate. I wasn't gonna do any more of these drafts this summer but I'm after getting 2 recruitment PMs to join this thing so I'll give it a go I guess. I'm probably just gonna go off the top of my head though, at least for now
