Didn't he retire from the 'Fins?
Ya know I just looked it up, and well yes..he did. He signed a 1 day contract with the Chargers just to retire a Charger, then signed with the Patriots 4 days later. I didn't follow football as much back then as I do now. So that info really makes me less mad at the Patriots (for signing old vets anyway), and madder at Seau. Glad you pointed that out.

what does signing a bunch of players have to do with "committed to winning"? That doesn't mean anything the 49ers have broken the bank the last few years and it hasn't gotten them anywhere. Besides the broncos released multiple players hence the reason to sign all these players.
Every team releases players at the end of the season. Every team. What's significant is that, of all the players the Broncos released, only one - Dre Bly - has ever played a significant role with the team.

Then, they go out and sign notable free agents on offense like Buckhalter, Arrington and Gaffney, to make Cutler's life easier. It's noteworthy that they signed two serviceable running backs when you consider the fact that they used something like 14 different backs last season. They're also talking to Derrick Ward of the Giants.

Then, addressing the horrid defense, they sign Andra Davis (yes, that Andra Davis) and Brian F. Dawkins, two additions that, along with their stud LB D.J. Williams and their All-Pro CB Champ Bailey will mean notable improvement on defense, in an already weak division.

I'm not talking about "breaking the bank". I'm talking about responsible additions to an already good team, to address their areas of weakness. If you want to compare the Broncos to the 49ers (who have had as many offensive coordinators in the last five years as Hugh Hefner has had girlfriends), then go right ahead. It's not a valid comparison. The fact is the Broncos are on the cusp, and their needs are being addressed early in free agency. Ask a Chargers fan how the Broncos have done so far in free agency.

Jay Cutler is in a very enviable position as a young quarterback in the NFL. He should appreciate that, and be flattered that other teams have expressed interest in him, while appreciating the fact that he DID NOT get traded, despite whatever talks occured. He should be excited that the most coveted young coach in the NFL the past two seasons chose his team over the other options he had. He should be thrilled that management has shown a commitment to building a winning team.

Well said Supes.

I thought Josh was walking into the most enviable situation of any of the ex-Pats but I still had my doubts, especially since he was going to the other team I like and has some pretty large shoes to fill. But he has done a remarkable job bringing talent in without trying to re-write the book the way that Mangini did with the Jets. Aside from Cutler's ability to learn the new playbook (and continue to improve his sometimes questionable decision making particularly inside the red zone) there's no reason to believe that this team will be taking a few steps back before they can step forward. And as you mentioned, he only cast out one regular starter who by all accounts has been a horrible bust.

Funny what we can agree on when it doesn't involve the Pats and Colts :)

Good post, and I agree. However, Derrick Ward is now a Buccaneer.

Chargers want to trade Cromartie

This has to be a financial move, and I don't really like it. Cromartie had a sub-par year, but its rumored that he was playing injured since Week 2, one year removed from a league-leading 10 INT season
I think that's a huge mistake. The Chargers secondary is already subpar. The one year they had a good year as a unit was the year Cromartie had 10 interceptions. He can't be on the books for that much money. In fact, I just looked it up, and he signed a five year, $12.5 million contract as a rookie. No contract issues until after 2011. I don't get it.

Allegedly Cromartie played all or most of last season with a broken hip. That's a pretty big injury for a CB to recover from, but then again his numbers could have just been down with SD's pass rush falling apart. The other rationale is "Well they have Cason and Jammer behind him so they need to maximize value", by that logic the Pats trade Brady and go into the year with Cassel and O'Connell.

Of course, Cromartie is not the Brady of cornerbacks, but it's the same logic. Don't trade your best DB because you want to give the young guys a shot. I can understand letting him walk if he's looking for a $9 million/yr contract as a free agent, and you have these young guys that you look, but unless there's something seriously wrong with him, physically, you don't trade your third year, Pro Bowl corner, who's on the books for $3.5 million this season. That's just dumb.

Yeah I don't get it either, especially with their secondary being as bad as it is. I can understand their loyalty to Drayton Florence but honestly, I don't think he's anything special. Heck, there's only a handful of CBs in the entire league that I'd take over Cromartie when he's healthy, and Florence obviously isn't one of them. I'm not a fan of AJ Smith right now.

Awww gee, you could have took a swipe here and instead you open with an unnecessary defense of Brady's abilities. A missed season and you're developing a soft spot for him :p

Now, don't get carried away. :p

Of course (and you must've missed this), I've never disliked Tom Brady. I've always felt like the comparisons between him and Peyton Manning were unfair, and I have recently begun to dislike Bill Belichick. But I've never had any ill feelings toward Brady. I hoped he'd get sidelined with IBS or something down the stretch of the '07 season so that Manning's record would stand, but no such luck.

I could've sworn I remember you coming up with some poor reason to hate on him like you didn't like his face in 2007.

Pro Bowl may return to Hawaii
Under pressure to bring the Pro Bowl back to Hawaii, the state tourism board is expected to reverse itself and accept the NFL's offer to play the all-star game in the islands in 2011 and '12.

...

The proposed deal would bring the game back to Hawaii in 2011, but it would be played the week before the Super Bowl instead of the week afterward.

The Pro Bowl will be played in Miami in 2010.
I still wish they'd keep it after the season, but at least they're trying to keep it in Hawaii, where it should be. I get the feeling there's going to be some problems in the legal department next season, and the NFL is going to be happy to have the game back in a more exclusive location.

I think putting it back in Hawaii is good for the players families and the week before the superbowl is good for potential sponsors and for viewers who like the finality of the Super Bowl as well. Kind of the best of both worlds.

I think the week before the Super Bowl is a TERRIBLE idea. Just imagine how devastating it would be if say Big Ben re-aggravates an injury in the Pro Bowl, and can't play in the Super Bowl? I've always wanted to see it mid-season, say after Week 9, but there really is nothing wrong with having it after the Super Bowl.

I have no problem with it going back to Hawaii though.

Shawn Springs to Pats

Not a bad signing for them, seeing as how their secondary has been second rate the past two or three seasons, outside of Asante Samuel. He's not going to make them extremely better, but he should be able to handle his assignments effectively.

Hasn't been a lot of NFL news today, outside of TO and Torry Holt, not much has happened.

Springs will help out but they've never had a shut down corner (Assante was just as likely to get burned as he was to make a great play... plus he dropped the game clinching int), they still need to draft a corner on day 1 and hopefully shore up the pass rush to mask that weakness.

I saw that one and can't comment on it. Maybe a replacement for Kelley Washington on ST, I don't see him as a replacement for Gafney.
