The Official All The Trades/Moves INFORMATION Thread

Why is it the "official" thread? Well only because I am doing it and trying to gather everything at once:

Move #1:
2nd round pick (protected until 2015)

for

Sam Cassel (waived)
+cash considerations

Why was it done? -- purely about the money. Boston paid us about $350,000 (above his contract) to take him and waive him.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Move #2:
Brad Miller (2yrs $23.6mil)
John Salmons (3yrs $16.4mil)

for

Drew Gooden (1yr $7.1mil -- ending contract)
Andres Nocioni (4yrs $29mil)
Cedric Simmons (1yr $1.7mil -- ending contract)
Ike Diogu (1yr $2.9mil -- ending contract)

Why was it done? -- apparently about cutting loose dead wood, and uninspired veterans, and getting back ending contracts. Geoff has apparently liked Gooden for years, for whatever reason, while Ike Diogu and Cedric Simmons are both failed lottery bigs from the last few years. Chances are none of them return next year, although maybe one will impress. Meanwhile Nocioni is a scrappy veteran with a terrible contract. Note that Diogu actually came from Portland, not Chicago -- the 4th Chicago player was Michael Ruffin (a limited banger) who was sent to Portland while Portland sent Diogu to us (saved Portland a little money, got us a better prospect).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Move #3:
Shelden Williams (1yr $3.4mil -- ending contract)
Bobby Brown (2yr $1.2mil)

for

Rashard McCants (1yr $2.6mil -- ending contract)
Calvin Booth (1yr $1.1mil -- ending contract)

Why was it done? -- most likely it was about McCants. He is a talented scorer, but just a knucklehead. Since his contract is ending, and so was Shelden's, this was pretty much a free move to see how he performs. If well, maybe he comes back. If not, we jsut let him go as the ending contract. Booth and Brown were just salary matchers probably, but helped balance the trade 1 big + 1 guard on a side, and let us shed a little bit of money on Bobby's contract for next year ($730,000).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Move #4:
a future 2nd round pick (don't know details yet)

for

Will Solomon (1yr $0.7mil -- ending contract)
+cash considerations

Why was it done? -- looks like another deal about those cash considerations. Pass around the hat, our owners are suddenly poor. Presumably the 2nd round pick is heavily protected again, as this was just a way for Boston to dump a salary on Toronto, while Toronto dumped one (an ender) on us. Solomon is much like Bobby Brown -- a shoot first backup PG who did well in Europe, but finds himself nothing special once he crossed the pond.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Move #5:
Waive Mikki Moore
Waive Quincy Douby

Why was it done? -- these waivers were necessary to get us back down to only 15 players after all the moves. They also cleared out some of the last of the old guard. In Mikki's case a clause in his contract triggered by his waiver also means that instead of the $6mil we owed him next year, now we will only owe him $2mil. So its an extra $4 million in savings.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Move #6:
Kings granted cap relief for Shareef Abdur Rhaim by the NBA

What does it mean? -- almost lost in all the trading shuffle the Kings won an important little victory here. Basically the NBA had a doctor certify that Shareef's knees had indeed ended his career, and because of that now the final two years of his contract (2yrs $12.8mil) come off of our salary cap, while his salary is paid by an insurance company rather than the Maloofs. Its as big a savings as any of the moves we made for ending contracts.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

C Spencer Hawes

Note: I deleted a couple of comments in the hopes this wouldn't become another bit of redunancy on discussions already under way. I think having Bricklayer do the trade analysis and posting it here for reference primarily will be beneficial...and a lot easier to follow if we don't have to wade through a lot of the same comments being made in other threads.

Hey Brick, is it possible to have ONE pretty girl after the Nocioni trade description? After reading it, it will definately leave alot of Kings fans pretty depressed...but at least there will be a pretty girl right there to cheer us up! :D

It's funny.. If Bricks post was put the the personal moves forum people would have been upset.. Anyhow, thanks for putting it up.

I dont think the FA pool is good in 2010. Its 2011 where its at. Perfect to throw a K9 expiring into for an all-star caliber vet whos not happy where he's at who is also an expiring. All of a sudden the albatross might work out. Then you have some other expirings next year who gives us a run at an FA. Plus a couple lottery picks and some years at the youth we already have. Look for a totally revamped team for the 2011 season.

Essentially, every deal is a cost cutting move as expected, except for picking up Noc ... which makes you wonder why GP would cling to him when offered Davis, Allen, Scalabrine and O'Bryant from Boston.

Does he see something we don't ... or did he only want expirings for THIS season and we've totally given up on 2010?

I like the Maccants and Diogu pick ups the most, two possible rotation players that are restricted f/as after this year so thats a bonus.

It looks like we are really looking to get a free agent this off-season.
Please be Sessions.

Okay, would somebody who is far better informed/better at math than me be willing to break down how much cap space we will have at the end of this year? Is it enough to make a splash in free agency (assuming we convince somebody to come to Sacramento)?

Here's the situation next year, using Hoopshype numbers:

Kevin Martin 10,180,170
Andres Nocioni 7,500,000
Kenny Thomas 8,553,125
Beno Udrih 6,077,500
Mikki Moore 2,000,000
Spencer Hawes 2,332,800
Francisco Garcia 5,800,000
Jason Thompson 2,035,920
Donte Greene 870,000

That totals $45,349,515

With our picks it should be about $50,000,000

The cap this year was $58 million, and it's rumored to go down. So we should have anywhere from $6-8 million next year, assuming we don't re-sign any of the new guys. Not much, but possibly enough to sign a mid-tier free agent or take on some salary in exchange for draft picks.

I thought Mikki Moore is gone.

Edit: Oh wait. This is what we pay him since we waived him? If he is picked up then, are we off the hook for the $2 mil?

I think it was discussed that we'll be around 50M and the estimate is that the cap will be lowered to about 57M next year. We will be able to outbid MLE offers that most teams will have but not able to bring in a big name player.

Unless we can move Nocioni or Beno or Garcia before then, it is unlikely we will be able to offer a max contract now in 2010. Hard to estimate with draft picks, roster additions, and lowering cap number but we'll likely be around 45M range and have 12Mish starting to offer if we blow it all on one player.

Well, we did need a point guard to the worst degree (we only had Beno, and he's only an average "point guard", before the trade with Toronto and Boston) and although Will Solomon is a converted point guard who still shows signs of his shooting guard days, he's still a better option than what Bobby Brown was giving us pre-trade deadline.

Talentwise + potential-wise, O'Bryant trumps him, but Solomon does not appear to be trash--he's currently 13th in the league in assist ratio (way better than Udrih who is 46th among all players) although man, the guy is equally as turnover prone as Beno Udrih. His usage rate in Toronto has been higher than Udrih's, so it appears to be that he'll help you in passing, but hurt you with some turnovers spattered along the way. He doesn't appear to be a good shooter either--enough to keep defenders honest maybe, but doesn't really display much of a three point shot. Nondescript defense. So best asset seems to be passing ability, with poor to decent shooting and turnovers. And he's going on 30. But he's on a cheap contract, we sorely need a stopgap PG, and he can be an okay one. But just don't expect him to be resigned next year.

Try this on for size, check me on it, and see if it sticks...

If you look at the net salary change over the next 3 years from all these moves (trades and waiving Mikki...assuming we save the net $4.2M gain toward the cap on his next year salary), and not including the gift of SAR's knees, here is what happened when the smoke cleared compared with where we were justa few days ago:

post 08-09 : -$18,631,920

post 09-10 : +$1,072,000

post 10-11: +$6,650,000

The $19M or so benefit coming most immediately is mostly due to trading Brad's and John's continuing contracts for mostly expiring/team option ones, all except Nocioni's. Not sure we get the cap benefit from waiving Mikki, but I think we do since it was non-guaranteed money (like when we sign 2nd rounders).

Bottom Line: I don't know where the cap cut line will be this summer, but it appears that what we have done is given ourselves the flexibility to play EITHER this summer or next, where before it had to be next for any real "splash" player. With the word that many, many teams were also gearing up for next summer, this may be a move by Petrie to avoid that competition and go for a big name FA that might be free in just a few months. Only thing is, I have no idea who is coming free this summer, if indeed there is anyone of note to chase "early".

Although, considering that the FO is taking relatively paltry amounts to let our roster be the dumping ground for teams trying to clear space, I doubt that the Maloofs are wanting to fork over any additional money. It seems like they're bending over backwards to cut costs, and I don't foresee a spectacular economic boom between now and July. I'd like to be wrong, but... I think the draft, and a few FAs for about minimum are what we have to look forward to in October.

I might even be okay with that -- the team we have now plus draft picks will be far more entertaining than anything we've seen this year, and Geoff is far, far better at picking up players off the scrap heap than he is trying to sign players with actual money.

So our rotation appears as follows:

PG: Udrih/ Solomon/ Jackson
SG: Martin/ McCants/ Jackson
SF: Nocioni/ Garcia/ Greene
PF: Thompson/ Gooden/ Diogu/ KT
C: Hawes/ Booth/ Simmons

Actually in three positions, having McCants, Nocioni/Garcia, and Gooden off the bench brings solid scoring and defensive punch. Of course, with Gooden injured, look for Diogu to strut any game he has and be productive particularly offensively.

Center and point guard, particularly at the backup positions, appears to be pretty weak. Solomon is no one's idea of a starter, and is very average even as a backup. I guess Jackson can spell him there, but he can't really initiate an offense. For center, with Gooden injured, I presume that now with this roster Simmons may actually see some playing time--I don't think he'll do as well as Diogu, but it's worth seeing what he can bring, even though he's 6'9" and playing center and I think he'll be manhandled and in foul trouble constantly. Clearing Mikki Moore and Shelden Williams got rid of some of the glut here, but because Diogu and Simmons haven't played in a long time, it's questionable what they can bring. But they will get playing time.

OK, by my quick calcs, we will get rid of all the traded-for dead wood in a few months and have a team salary of only $45.3 million (assuming Mikki's leftovers only hit us for the $2 million we owe him). This year's salary cap was $58.7 million. You can do the rest of the math.

Again, I would not sign anyone until we rid of K9 and Beno this summer. If not, wait until summer 2010
