Why is it the "official" thread? Well only because I am doing it and trying to gather everything at once:
Move #1:
2nd round pick (protected until 2015)
for
Sam Cassel (waived)
+cash considerations
Why was it done? -- purely about the money. Boston paid us about $350,000 (above his contract) to take him and waive him.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Move #2:
Brad Miller (2yrs $23.6mil)
John Salmons (3yrs $16.4mil)
for
Drew Gooden (1yr $7.1mil -- ending contract)
Andres Nocioni (4yrs $29mil)
Cedric Simmons (1yr $1.7mil -- ending contract)
Ike Diogu (1yr $2.9mil -- ending contract)
Why was it done? -- apparently about cutting loose dead wood, and uninspired veterans, and getting back ending contracts. Geoff has apparently liked Gooden for years, for whatever reason, while Ike Diogu and Cedric Simmons are both failed lottery bigs from the last few years. Chances are none of them return next year, although maybe one will impress. Meanwhile Nocioni is a scrappy veteran with a terrible contract. Note that Diogu actually came from Portland, not Chicago -- the 4th Chicago player was Michael Ruffin (a limited banger) who was sent to Portland while Portland sent Diogu to us (saved Portland a little money, got us a better prospect).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Move #3:
Shelden Williams (1yr $3.4mil -- ending contract)
Bobby Brown (2yr $1.2mil)
for
Rashard McCants (1yr $2.6mil -- ending contract)
Calvin Booth (1yr $1.1mil -- ending contract)
Why was it done? -- most likely it was about McCants. He is a talented scorer, but just a knucklehead. Since his contract is ending, and so was Shelden's, this was pretty much a free move to see how he performs. If well, maybe he comes back. If not, we jsut let him go as the ending contract. Booth and Brown were just salary matchers probably, but helped balance the trade 1 big + 1 guard on a side, and let us shed a little bit of money on Bobby's contract for next year ($730,000).
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Move #4:
a future 2nd round pick (don't know details yet)
for
Will Solomon (1yr $0.7mil -- ending contract)
+cash considerations
Why was it done? -- looks like another deal about those cash considerations. Pass around the hat, our owners are suddenly poor. Presumably the 2nd round pick is heavily protected again, as this was just a way for Boston to dump a salary on Toronto, while Toronto dumped one (an ender) on us. Solomon is much like Bobby Brown -- a shoot first backup PG who did well in Europe, but finds himself nothing special once he crossed the pond.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Move #5:
Waive Mikki Moore
Waive Quincy Douby
Why was it done? -- these waivers were necessary to get us back down to only 15 players after all the moves. They also cleared out some of the last of the old guard. In Mikki's case a clause in his contract triggered by his waiver also means that instead of the $6mil we owed him next year, now we will only owe him $2mil. So its an extra $4 million in savings.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Move #6:
Kings granted cap relief for Shareef Abdur Rhaim by the NBA
What does it mean? -- almost lost in all the trading shuffle the Kings won an important little victory here. Basically the NBA had a doctor certify that Shareef's knees had indeed ended his career, and because of that now the final two years of his contract (2yrs $12.8mil) come off of our salary cap, while his salary is paid by an insurance company rather than the Maloofs. Its as big a savings as any of the moves we made for ending contracts.
