Jumping on the Draft Thread bandwagon...

#1
While stuck in traffic a few weeks ago, I got the idea to start another draft. I held off, however, because I was concerned that people were probably all drafted out and wouldn't be interested. Well, the interest in the video game draft, and the number of music hounds that apparently still have long lists to pick from, has inspired me to put out feelers for what I'm calling The Alternate Rules Music Draft Thread.

Tons of my most beloved albums/songs/artists were ineligible for the other Music Draft thread due to the content rules, and I started to wonder how different all the lists would look if those were suddenly lifted. I haven't written out official rules, yet, and likely won't unless it looks like people want to give this a shot, but the quick version is that it would follow the structure of Slim's draft exactly and differ only in content.

The content would be limited to full albums only (no singles or mix tapes), and would be open ONLY to the albums not allowed in the other thread -- greatest hits, boxed sets, compilations, soundtracks, comedy albums, etc. -- if it was allowed in Slim's thread, it's off limits here, and vice versa. Also, since it would undoubtedly come up as a question, boxed sets would follow the same basic rules as double albums in Slim's thread: if it was one multi-disc release (the only examples of which I can think of are ones I don't want to divulge, but I can clarify if necessary) then it counts as one pick, but if it is a compilation that was released in volumes (Now That's What I Call Music #34785940734, for example) each volume would be a separate pick. Also, each greatest hits album is seen as separate, even if it's for the same artist. If someone picks the comprehensive 4-disc Milli Vanilli boxed set, for example, you can still pick a different Milli Vanilli greatest hits disc, you'll just have to live with a few less alternate takes of "Blame it on the Rain."

If anyone is interested, or has any other questions, go ahead and respond here.

This sounds like a much better idea that I would've thought. I just remember reading somewhere, I think from VF, that the number of running drafts would like to be held down to 3 if possible. So with the video game drafting starting soon once the music one ends, will VF's hot rod draft not start till my movie draft is over and yours not start till Brick's babe draft is done? That's my confusion here.

edit: also I heard rumblings of two other drafts (one of which I think you might have alluded to in your first post ;) ) that I, frankly, am more interested in. I think the draft cap, if there even is one, should be raised since I'm doubting anyone would even commit themselves to more than 3 drafts and would hardly be interested in all 5 at any given time

Me too. If new drafts start as the other drafts end, I'd be in.

I'm completely flexible on timing, really, but have been in agreement that three running drafts is about carrying capacity for the Lounge. Since I'm planning on being out of town for a couple of weeks this summer and my time spent here will be shorter, waiting for the babe thread to finish up is probably going to be just about perfect to me. On the other hand, however, if people wanted to start sooner for any reason (which I'm not anticipating), I'd also be fine with that.

Nope. No rumbling at all. I, dorky as it may be, have been having a lot of fun with the draft threads -- not only are they a good way to kill time, but they've also inspired me to pay attention to some of the films/albums in my collection that I've been neglecting. The only reason I didn't join the video game thread was because, after playing around with a tentative list, I just didn't think I was enough of a gamer to last that many rounds and chose not to take a spot from someone who was. The car one... is very tempting. That's another where I'm just trying to figure out time and potential choices before I decide whether or not to join.

Trust me I've heard some rumblings. :D By rumblings, I meant "news of" not problems or something else I think you thought I was saying. It was about 2 very interesting sounding drafts that I really want to see happen. One in particular. I think having 4 or 5 at a time would not even be that big of a deal. Hell, let's ride this fad as hard as we can, it might not be cool next year :p

Gotcha. Certainly not looking to step on any toesies with this, just throwing it out there as an idea.

I still think 3 or so are about the maximum for success. And considering the time commitment involved in keeping the threads up to date, any more than that would be a recipe for disaster IMHO.

I'm not going to start the Classic Ride thread until at least two of the current drafts have concluded. The video game thread is in the queue ahead of mine.

Remember, it's only July and we have the entire TDOS to get through. Pacing oneself is key.

Oh wait. Almost forgot...

Add me to the list on this one, especially since my very first pick for the other music thread was disallowed by the commish.

:)

That's the key for me too. TDOS is only a month old. Still, what, 3.5 months to go?

I am in on this one as well. Maybe it would mix it up a little if we did the IPOD one first, but I open to popular opinion. I was going to wait until the music thread was over to start it.

I'm out of this one, but will jump in the iPod music singles one when that fires up.
I didn't see that mentioned anywhere but I was gonna bring it up. I don't think I'd do very good with this draft, so I'm sitting this one out as well, and will probably enter the music singles one if that ever gets started.

I think Kingzrool was going to follow up with this one later. If he doesn't want to, I'm sure someone will set it up. ;)

I am on it. I just want to make sure too many do not get started at once. Unless directed otherwise, I plan to start the IPOD singles draft thread as soon as the current music draft is over.

Wait, iPodmusic singles? I was aware of a singles draft, but what's the iPod part mean? Like you only get the 20 songs you pick on an iPod somewhere forever?

Anyway, I really wish the "draft cap" or whatever the hell could be raised up. The TDoS will likely be ending when this 2nd round of drafts are done (the first round took 2 months, in 2 months it will nearly be october). I know I and a few others were really looking forward to the singles draft. I mean....what can 4 drafts being up hurt? :) If we must keep it at 3 for some reason, perhaps delay this one till the singles one is over, like Kingzrool suggested.

I already have the Video Game Draft lined up and ready to start when the music draft is over, and now there is this draft and the classic rides draft lined up to go too. With a maximum of 3 drafts going on at a time, it might be a while before it gets started, unless you check with a moderator. :)

I think it just means yeah, you pick 20 songs. They go on an ipod (or whatever) and that is all you can take. 20 songs.

I don't think it differs from what you were thinking.

But I'd be willing to up the number to 25 or 30. But I think you see the interest waning from some participants in the drafts after 20 rounds already. The fact that you are choosing singles instead of albums would help here, though.

I think he had already mentioned starting this one before those others popped up, so he could go first.

JMHO.

Yeah, the singles draft has been planned, by someone, for months now. We talked about it way back early in the album draft. The rest will fall out where they will fall out. Notr sure that there is any strict limit on the number going at once, but maybe just a practical one -- only so many drafters with so much attention ot go around. Get half a dozen going at once and people will be timing out, non-drafters won't check all the threads, etc. There is a happy medium somewhere in there.

Alright, good to hear. He needs to get a sign up page going then.

I'd also be for a 25-30 song list. I thought it would be 20 because that's a common amount you can fit on a CD-R and I thought that would be the theme. But i forgot....who uses CD's anymore :p

Like I said early in this thread, a) I don't want to step on any toes and b) I'm completely flexible in timing.

Considering how much time I spend on the computer with homework and procrastination, it's very rare that I don't check the boards every day. Therefore, I'm willing to get started whenever everyone else wants to -- if that's tomorrow, two months from now, during the season, next summer, whatever. I've enjoyed the current music draft, am looking forward to following the singles draft (that one I KNOW I'm too indecisive to even attempt), and think this would be a fun idea, too.

However it works out is how it works out, though. Lord knows the last thing I want in my life is to stress over an interweb music game.

While I'm the same way, I could probably narrow it down well enough if I confined the singles to bands that only had one or two decent songs. I'd call them one hit wonders, but with my tastes I doubt they cracked the top 1000.

OK, in order to keep things rolling I am going to start the Singles IPOD Draft thread signups later today and start the actual draft once that the current music draft is over. This seems what the above consensus is. Unless a mod directs me otherwise, I will post it at some point today. I plan on having it go to 25 rounds.

After an elbow or two to the ribs I would just like to mention how incredibly onboard with and vibrantly excited I am about this thread. It indeed meets my every hope and dream of felicity, and life itself pales in comparison to my enthusiasm for this concept.
