Some tips on doing Vegas cheaply for summer league games.

1. Stay in a motel. I got a room for $53 at the Comfort Inn that is 10 min walk from the arenas. Amerisuites is also good and cheap and across the street from the arenas.

2. Stay on/near Paradise Road or Tropicana. There are buses all day and all night along those roads and cost is $1-$2 vs taxis that charge $8-$10 for same trip.

3. Some places, Comfort Inn for example, have FREE airport shuttles. Normal hotel shuttles from airport are $6 and taxis can be $15-$25.

4. Get your room booze and snacks at supermarkets, there all over now. Stay away from liquor stores on Paradise or the strip. Arena food ok but expensive, more so than Arco.

5. Airline tickets are relatively cheap. Today, tuesday got round trip for $178 from San Jose. or Carpool and share gas.

6. After every game a designated draftee signs autographs in the lobby of the Cox Pavillion. MOst of the top 5 types will do a free signing after a game.

I'll have postings on KingsFans.com summarizing each quarter of Kings games with an overview on who is performing and who is not.

Does anybody know the profiles of the other players? Can't wait for it to start. Go Kings!!!

Dowdell's an interesting prospect. He was actually expected to get drafted his year. He's a good pg that isn't overly athletic or a good shooter. He played oversees last year and was fairly good. I saw him play a bit in college and always thought he ran a team pretty well.

Bo McCalebb is quick and very athletic. He's a good defender but a horrible shooter. He's also undersized and is more of a scorer.

Darian Townes is a bug guy that doesn't play big. He's got decent game but is slow and doesn't use his size well. Bad combo.

Palacios played on a stacked team but put up very subpar stats. He doesn't really stand out in any one area but is a solid all around player.

Matt Walsh's best attribute is the fact he dates a playmate.

I don't know much about Hawkins besides his stats. Looks like he was a big scorer.

More info on summer league players

Here is what I could quickly find about some of the summer league players I did not know about. Will be interesting to see them perform at ground level.

Zabian Dowdel, 6-3 190 VaTechl
-- he has amazing reach for a guy his size, his basketball IQ is very high, he works extremely hard, he's a dream to coach --(ESPN, TrueHoop by Henry Abbott);
-- Dowdell took his efforts one step further by donating $5,000 of his own money to the relief effort (for the Virginia Tech tragedy/shooting).-- (DraftExpress.com)
-- in senior year was PG when VT beat both North Carolina and Duke.......Early on (at Portsmouth Invitational 2008), Dowdell was setting up teammates nicely, but they weren’t finishing their shots. It was at that point that he decided to take over the scoring load. Dowdell stated that he hoped being able to switch on the fly from passing guard to scoring guard will be a help come draft day. (DraftExpress)
-- last 3 yr at VaTech: shot 44% from field, 74% FT, 3+asts, 2+ stl, and incr pts/gm every year from 10.8 to 17.4

Justin Hawkins, 6-7 204(actually from New Mexico State, Reggies old school!)
Hawkins did it all for the Aggies during his two-year stay in Las Cruces, scoring from inside, outside and providing a presence in the paint. The reality in the NBA is that if you are 6-foot-7, knocking down the perimeter shot on a consistent basis is a prerequisite for any player looking to compete for a job. Hawkins said he feels like his outside game has excelled and doesn't want to be grouped as someone who gets trapped between shooting guard and small forward.
"My strength is the two-guard (shooting guard)," Hawkins said. "I don't want to be considered a three (small forward) or a tweener or anything like that. And I'm definitely not a four (power forward). I can play the two and play it well." (Las Cruces Sun-News, by Teddy Feinberg 6/26/08)
A 40% 3pt shooter, 2.4 ast, 7.2 reg, 18.4 pts in senior yr at NMS. Vs. Duke 16 pts & 11 reb, 2 blks.

Marcus Malone
Biggest item is he is the cousin of Karl Malone of the Jazz. Stats very average, Ast/TO in senior year was 2.06, not great shooter or rebounder or assist guy.

Juan Palacios, 6-8 245, Lousiville
ESPN draft review had this to say about Juan, a 4-yr player at Louisville:
Positives: Big body who can play both forward positions. Very tough. Loves to play physical. Great passing instincts allow him to even play a little point forward.

Negatives: Has conditioning and weight issues. Not a great athlete which raises questions about his ability to defend the three position in the pros.

Summary: Lots of mixed opinions on Palacios right now. Some see him as a big, physical forward in the James Posey or Ron Artest mode. Others think he's at least another full season away from the pros.
Stat wise a 70% FT, 47% FG, 6+reb all in 26 min his last 2 yr

Patrick Sanders, 6-6 205, UC Irvine
Another 4-yr guy who played 31+ min/gm last 2 years along with 15pts, 5 reb, 43% FG and 82% FT. Otherwise not much I could find about him

Darian Townes, 6-10 250, Arkansas, 24 yr
This from "nbadradt.net"
Strengths: Big power forward with good size and strength and a solid offensive game ... Very smooth shooting the ball from 12 feet and in with a jump hook shot that he uses effectively... Has a big frame with long arms and good agility ... With more time on the floor, he could see his offensive numbers improve considerably ... His great wingspan makes him an effective rebounder and shot blocker ... Has a good free throw shot but lacks concentration, capable of shooting in the mid 70s if he works at it ... His post moves show promise, but he needs to refine them ...

Weaknesses: Doesn't display a great motor. Needs to learn to play with a higher level of intensity to better maximize his talents ... Does not show a fondness for contact, despite his excellent body and apparent strength ... Needs to get more physical and use his 255 pound frame to dominate in the post ... Conditioning also must improve. He averaged just 22 minutes per game as a sophomore ...Lacks great speed in the open floor, looks a little stiff in transition ... His numbers actually dipped from his freshman to sophomore season after coming in with high expectations ... Doesn't get to the free throw line nearly enough for a post player, needs to force the issue under the basket more often ... Lack of foot speed limits his ability to grab rebounds out of his area ...

Well good -- finally a summer league roste that looks like a summer league roster, without our vets all running on to steal minutes and "win" games.

And better yet, with only one extra big man, bascially all of the big man minutes should go to the guys we want to see play anyway: Hawes, Thompson and Sheldon.

I too was hoping we got the live broadcasts again -- was even going to try, if I had time, to do the little postgame quickie grades for those who could not watch. Nba.com is of no use to me, because for some reason I have never been able to watch any of their broadcasts on my home machine. But vegassummerleague.com is gone, with no redirect. And given the wild success of the league the only reason I could think of is that the nba must have bought it up as an "official" summer league or some such.

Wow, I'm actually going to be in Vegas that week for a conference. I think I'll skip out on the Wednesday talks and try to go to the game... probably the first live Kings game I'll be going to in 4 years.

I'm a major MAC person as well and just looked at the "Top 10 Summer League Highlights" on NBA TV broadband on :http://www.nba.com/summerleague2008/

Also on the NBA TV broadband site is a 02:24 video segment on our Jason Thompson starting in his home with interviews with his parents up to the moment, in his house when the Kings announced him as their pick. Really cool!! :D

Lots of other video highlights on that same site too: top 10 moves and top 10 buzzer beaters from last season, etc.

I have a Mac running OS 10.5.3 and it works fine. I think you also need the latest .wmv driver. The site did not work for me 2 days ago (Thur) but works fine now. Suggest you get latest Quicktime and .wmv and give that a try. Or, :p get a Mac!

Then there is "More Summer League Video". It takes you to a new site with a ton of videos to watch on our computer.

I Have a mac running 10.5.3 and see everything just fine.

ooooo

Watch out for Bo McCalebb.. I had no clue we invited him to camp.. Great kid with an amazing knack for scoring. Needs to improve on his passing though as he is going to need to make the transition to full time PG.

Brick are you on a MAC?

No, I am an adult. ;)

But regardless this machine has been very consistent in not playing it. Through 2 operating systems even. Different browsers. Firewalls on or off. Virus protection enabled or disabled. I am beyond baffled. And consistently annoyed by the NBA and its proprietary software B.S.. There is no difficulty whatsoever streaming from 100 different sources, whether it be yahoo, youtube, or whatever. So its something particular to whatever they are doing. And as they have virtually no help over there, no idea what it is.

Even adults are going to the Mac.............

Have you tried Quicktime yet? There are PC versions now equivalent to Mac versions but even then the ".wmv" element may need to be latest and greatest (a PC version too).

UPDATE, VSL rosters

Went searching for the rosters of the Kings vegas summer league opponents and sadly, 5 days before it all starts there is only one opponent roster available today 6-July, the Warriors, the Kings opponent on Friday the 18th. Their first round draftee was Anthony Randolph, all 6-9 and 205 lb of him. That will be fun seeing Jason Thompson and he in the same game.

Only other player of note from Warrior roster is Louis Amundson, the rebounding machine who had no jumpshot and was a sub 50% FT who played on the Kings summer league team year before last.

Roster list for VSL teams can be found at:

The NBA is terrible at writing standards-compliant code. I can get their video to work with Opera under either Windows or Linux, but not with Firefox or Mozilla/Seamonkey/Netscape. It also works for me with IE/Windows, although (for security reasons) I would never recommend that anyone use IE.

And, even so, it can go wrong in a number of ways. If you don't accept connections to doubleclick.net (a huge ad content provider), you're hosed. They don't host the content themselves, so you have to allow other connections as well. They probably do suspect things with cookies. They use a different format from most places, so one could also have plugin issues.

I hope that they'll fix it one of these days, not that I see many promising signs.

And it works fine for me on Safari under OS X 10.5.3 on the Mac. Maybe the PC users could try the PC version of Safari. I understand it is virtually the same as the Mac version and written in Unix. There are known differences between Firefox and Safari and IE.

Players To Watch On Summer League Team

In the summer league the Kings, and most other teams as well, will typically have 3 full teams (the Kings list 17 players on their VSL roster). Teams will likely run one team against another for several days of practice leading up to going to Las Vegas. The Kings typically have not had the same starting lineup in any two consecutive games in summer league.

Following are my views and some comments on players who should "make or break" their NBA season:

Hawes will see a lot of time at the 5 sharing with Darian Townes and possibly Thompson filling in to see how he fits. Darian is another 4-yr guy on this roster having played at Arkansas. Reports indicate good NBA size/strength/offense. Has smooth jumper and jump hook, big frame and long arms used for rebounding and shot blocking. BUT....not very intense, needs to get more physical and use his size.

Shelden and Jason are the two main PF withPalacios and maybe Noel Felix (a Fresno State guy who played in Israel last year) getting time. Its entirely possible that internally Shelden and Jason will be pitted head-to-head to see what develops there. Ewing is a "tweener" they say but he is a legit 6-8 and 240 (same as Lebron, incidentally) and could see PF time. Palacios has the pedigree as a 4-yr player at Louisville who plays tough and physical and has great passing instincts. BUT.....has had conditioning and weight issues and is not a great athlete.

At the SF its a real crapshoot with Justin Hawkins, the NM State guy who played for Theus, Patrick Sanders from UC Irvine, and Matt Walsh from Florida. Hawkins at NM State last year was their leading scorer and rebounder at 18.1 and 7.2 and played for Theus the year before.

The main guards will be Singletary and Douby with Zabian Dowdell, David Johnson, Darnell Jones, and Bo McCalebb seeing most of the time. Dowdell is yet another 4-yr player (from Virginia Tech) with a very high basketball IQ, amazing reach and good physical defender who works hard. BUT..... doesn't really excel in any one area, is a combo guard in college (but likely too small in NBA) and not a pure PG and is not particularly quick or explosive.

In the past 3 years, there are usually 2-3 players that are dropped from the summer league roster just before or after the first game and several more by the 3rd game. This is both a reality situation as well as insuring more playing time for the remaining 9-11 players to see their game in this, the next level.

My guess who will be around by Game 5 on the Kings summer league team (other than their draftees):
Dowdell, Townes and either Hawkins or Palacios. But what do I know at this point in time?
