Theus to be Kings' head coach

How about Doug Collins for an assistant?
has better things to do with his time unless he figures Reggie will be fired by midseason and he can take over as the head man.

As an aside, college success and/or demeanor means NOTHING in the NBA. Nothing. The best thing Reggie could do for his legitimacy in the NBA is from this day forward steadfastly refuse to even admit he ever coached at that level.

why?

NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Not another newbie!

brings nothing new to the table. basically another E-muss.

Reggie is the polar-opposite of Rick Adelman, with all boots and no cattle.

I have seen him interviewed over the years, and he always seems like an empty suit. This was obviously a Maloof hire.

And all this time, I assumed they were waiting to interview P.J. Maybe P.J. told Petrie and the Maloofs to take a hike?

Will Petrie quit because of this? I refuse to believe that he approved of this hire.

I feel like we are back to 1990 with no hope in sight.

:(

Looks like Brickie was right to drop his season-tickets.

bricklayer no disrespect intended or shot at your faith but if you were a true loyal fan, you would stick by the team no matter what and kept your tickets.

I'm perfectly okay with this hiring. Would have liked Shaw, but totally okay with Reggie. Kings suck anyways, why not bring a little spunk in? I don't see the kings winning anytime soon until the roster is changed so my expectations aren't that high. I'll still watch regardless, just hope the youngin's will get more playing time. It's not the end of the world!

Oh indeed, I am quite sure those were all false fans bailing this spring. ESPECIALLY the ones who live across the country and never even attend a game.

But hey, as a presumed true blue fan if you have an extra $5 grand on you the tickets I'm sure are still available.

As mentioned, maybe there is a subtle brilliance to the strategy here. Pummel people until they do not care anymore. Lower expectations until the point that they didn't hire the family dog is enough, that failure was already guaranteed, and that therefore, any hire is fine. (clank of beer bottles) Brilliant! :p

From what I heard shortly after it was announced, it WAS a Petrie decision with the Maloofs signing off.

Even the best fan has a right to criticize decisions, if not moreso. This hire looks pretty damn shakey. The fact is, is that Reggie Theus was the least qualified of all the potential hires. He has never won a championship, and we had the opportunity to hire a guy who was a locker room leader, championship winner, played for and was assistant coach for one of the greatest coaches in NBA history... Yeah, I'd say we have a right to criticize.

from the sacbee.com:

The Kings announced late Tuesday afternoon they have reached an agreement in principle with New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus to become their new coach.
Theus, who was one of three finalist for the position vacated by Eric Musselman's firing, was given the job after Kings general manager Geoff Petrie and representatives of Larry Brown failed to progress. The other finalists were current Kings assistant Scott Brooks and Lakers assistant Brian Shaw.

The idea that the Kings even considered Brown makes me want to puke. My god what a trainwreck that would have been.

Um, okay... I guess. Isn't that what a lot of people have been doing for the past 190 posts?

I think what I'm trying to post out is that "least qualified" is a relative term. It depends, I believe, on what your objectives are. If the Maloofs and Petrie are indeed finally SERIOUS about rebuilding, then someone like Theus who has been working very successfully with collegiate players may, in fact, be better suited to work with the young talent than some of the others.

It's a big crap shoot. I guess it all boils down once again to some being a little more optimistic or pessimistic than others.

Me, I like to look for the silver lining. It's a lot more fun for me to have something to look forward to than something to fear or dread.

Based on what I had heard and even more importantly what Gavin said to Dave tonight, I don't think the conversation with Brown went very far at all. The piece you're quoting was a bit by Voisin - and we know where she stood in the Brown scenario.

Gavin was pretty diplomatic in NOT saying they wanted nothing to do with the potential disaster LB could have been.

Hard to tell the depth of the consideration though. I'm not above thinking the whole thing was a Voison concoction trying to get the parties together. And myabe Larry's people call, or maybe the Maloofs feel like they should call out of courtesy (actually, scratch that, we've seen their manners). Anyway, and maybe that is as far as it goes. Just an initial hi, hello, give me $10 million a year and I promise to coach at least the first 5 months for you...and then *click*. ;)

Fair enough

Wow, just wow! I mean, I dont really know what to think of this...I'm happy because I know what Reggie will bring, in the way of passion for the game, knowledge of the game, and respect for the game and from his players...but damn...my all time favorite King as our new coach?? Who the hell woulda thunk it?? Wow....:)

edit: I will say one thing...I'm not sure expectations will really be that high for this next year, so that might be a good thing should Reggie bring a certain fire from our players and have it transcend into wins...nothing outrageous, but I think if we go .500, wow, the picture will be MUCH brighter for next season and beyond. The bar has been set low, as far as this next season.

Excellent points. I'm excited.

I wouldn't be happy about a .500 team no matter what the expectations are. .500 is never good unless you already have a budding franchise core, which we don't.

Unfortunately Reggie was a selfish player that never achieved anything (teamwise), and I think he's not going to carry the same legitimacy a guy who has won titles might.
A selfish player can't make a good coach? A guy who played in the league for 13 years won't get the player's respect because you deem him selfish? Theus did a hell of a lot more in the NBA than Scott Brooks, Kurt Rambis, and Brian Shaw. The only former player that was a possibility who possibly had a bigger name was Terry Porter. If Shaw, Brooks, Rambis, and Shaw could command respect from players because they are former players, then I see no reason why Theus is an exception.

Plus, you make it seem like all NBA players are avid historians of the game. I would be willing to bet serious money that 75% of our players no NOTHING about the playing careers/playing personalities of ANY of the potential candidates other than the fact that they played.

I'm pretty sure Bibby, Miller, Salmons, Martin etc... know little about the fact that Brian Shaw was the consumate teammate, that Brooks was a scrapper, or that Theus was "selfish." Most players admit they know little about NBA history, especially also-ran players. And if they do know, they don't care. I can imagine Bibby sitting in the locker room thinking "Man, coach was so selfish back in the mid-80s, that I am gonna dog it on the court tonight."

Give Theus a chance. I understand being angry with the decision, but to call him selfish, and to imply that will have some impact on his ability to coach players is just silly...

Hey who knows? Maybe Reggie will back off of the deal after a long hard thinking tonight....

What? That reminds you of someone? :p

Last time I checked, it's the unpredictable that makes any kind of sport fun to follow. :)

I've been listening to KHTK since the start of the Narchs game. I heard Gavin VF. I was po'd to hear they even tried to talk to him. The callers who wanted Brown didn't help any either.

I went outside and kicked a plum tree. I think I'm better now.;)

Yeah, but how 'bout that plum tree? ;)
