New 49ers thread for 2007 season

SF got Indy's 4th this year and Indy's 2008 1st.

Which I think is a good deal for SF.......
Wait, we got next years first from Indy and their 4th this year for our 2nd?

That doesn't seem right. They gave up a 1st and a 4th for a 2nd?

Anyone else confused?

#34
I wanted Dwayne Jarrett so badly!

Ahh...It just says that the Jackson trade is hopefully close to going through.
I'm glad we didn't take Jarrett. His 4.62 speed may have been enough in college, especially with Steve Smith across the field from him, but its not going to be enough in the NFL. I can't see why would spend so high a pick on a guy that will never be a #1 WR.

Yes....they did! I believe Indy has a ton of picks next year. So, they must have really wanted Ugoh at 42 and figured next years 1st rounder no big deal.

Exactly. I don't mind it.

I would have liked Jarrett because he is a big, physical reciever, much more suited for a QB like Alex Smith that doesn't throw deep as much as he throws short. We got Lelie and hopefully DJax to stretch the field, and Arnaz could have been a 4th + punt returner. Oh well.

Those three along with Vernon should be just fine.

DE LaMarr Woodley wasn't quite the type of DE that we need. He's more of a ouside linebacker. We already converted Manny Lawson from DE to OLB last year and so we could afford to let the pick go.

I think the focus for the third round expands to DE, S(free safety), RB, and then various special teams guys.

#38
They took WR Jason Hill in the 3rd rnd with the 76th pick. 4.3 speed and a good special teams guy. 32 TD's aren't too shabby either.
He also was the most feared WR in the Pac-10 and averaged 22.4 yds/carry. Basically he's a big play receiver and a possession reciever rolled into one bad dude.

I'm really excited with how the picks have gone for us so far... This team may not be back yet, but it sure seems to be heading in the right direction for a change.

Got this from the official 49ers website forums about McDonald.............

Ray McDonald Scouting Report

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Scouts Inc. Scouting Report (No Link, member's only section)

Strengths: Possesses good athleticism for his size. A versatile prospect with experience at defensive end and defensive tackle. He has some upside as an interior pass rusher because of his initial quickness and burst. He shows good upper body power and flashes some power moves as a pass rusher. He gives a good effort in terms of pursuing the run. He is at his best in space and shows good mobility. Is a solid wrap-up tackler with some power at the point of attack. He is a hard worker on and off the field. Plays the game with a lot of passion.

Weaknesses: Durability is the biggest concern after missing the majority of the 2005 season with two separate knee injuries. Lacks ideal top-end speed as a perimeter pass rusher but also lacks the size of an every-down defensive tackle in the NFL. He needs to play with more consistent leverage. When he comes out of his stance too high he becomes much less effective anchoring versus the run.

Overall: McDonald was redshirted in 2002 while practicing at defensive end. He moved to defensive tackle for the 2003 season, won a starting spot for the year (12 games), made 54 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, four sacks, and forced two fumbles. McDonald played in 11 games in 2004 (seven starts), recorded 39 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, three sacks, and one fumble recovery. In 2005, he switched back to defensive end, started the first three games before having knee surgery that forced him to sit out the next three contests. McDonald returned, appearing in two more games before having season-ending left knee surgery. For the year, he made eight tackles, three tackles for loss, and one sack. In 2006 he started all 14 games, registering 36 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, one blocked kick, and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.

McDonald is a 'tweener DE/DT prospect with experience at both positions at the collegiate level. While he may be forced to settle on one position in the NFL, we think he has the potential to contribute in a hybrid role in the right system. He is quick enough to make an impact as an interior pass rusher, but he must improve his lower-body strength and technique versus the run in order to compete for an every-down role in the NFL. Regardless, McDonald is a fringe first-round talent that will likely slip to the second round due to his history of knee injuries.

Mike Nolan has done an excellent job since his arrival. He has instituted a new quality that we haven't had since the dynasty years. I especially like how we have gotten rid of questionable characters and kept the quality ones. And the Yorks finally opened up the pocketbooks.

That is for sure. I could not be on board the Dennis Erickson bus but I'm ROLLIN WITH NOLAN!

What a HUGE day for both Bay Area teams ... just in opposite directions.

Of course, the BIG news will be the Raiders giving away Moss to the Patriots.
Sure, the Silver and Black are starting over, but I see it being a while before they're relevant again.

But don't let that overshadow the Niners officially picking up Darrell Jackson.

That's even better than that stupid April Fools joke that had the Niners getting Andre Johnson.

Teaming Jackson with Battle, Leilei and Davis finally gives us a solid receiving core for Smith.

Combine that with Gore running behind and even more solid line, and all the moves on Defense; This is a team that can challenge for the NFC West title.

I hope Willis is ready to make an impact.

#47
Not particularly a football fan, but it would be nice to have NoCal football relevant again. Watched the video of Willis in the thread, that they also showed yesterday. Interesting bit of foreshadowing that his college jersey number was 49? ;)

Our projected starters at linebacker for the 3-4 (Nolan's D of choice) are Lawson, Smith, Moore and Banta-Cain.

Think Willis can crack into the starting lineup?

You judge for yourself :D :

RE: Are you expecting to come in here and start right away?
“Yes sir, there is no doubt in my mind. I want to come in here, and whoever is in front of me, I want to push them to be the best they can be because every day that I step out on to that field, I want to be the best that I can be. If it’s good enough for the time the season starts and the coaches think it is, then I would start. But if its not, then its just special teams and whatever I have to do to help the team and contribute to the program. I’m all for it.”

He's going to push B.Moore and D.Smith to be better and I think we will see him with some consistent playing time. I'd like to see him phase Derek Smith into a predominant special teams role.

An 'in' and an 'out' pattern
The 49ers trade for productive Seahawks receiver Darrell Jackson, who had some issues in Seattle.
By Matthew Barrows - Bee Staff Writer
Last Updated 12:13 am PDT Monday, April 30, 2007

SANTA CLARA-The 49ers continued to stock up on defensive rookies Sunday, but it was the addition of a veteran offensive player that made the biggest splash.

Just before Day 2 of the draft got under way, the 49ers and Seahawks finalized a long-rumored trade that sent Seattle's top receiver last year, Darrell Jackson, to San Francisco for one of the 49ers' four fourth-round draft choices.

Jackson, 28, has had more than 1,000 receiving yards three times in his seven-year career and would have done so last season if he hadn't missed the final three games with a turf toe injury. Jackson passed a physical Saturday and is signed through the 2009 season.

Asked why the Seahawks would part ways with him and get so little in return, Jackson cited bad blood with general manager Tim Ruskell.

"They brought in some good players like Deion Branch and Nate Burleson, and they have an up-and-coming star in D.J. Hackett, so I guess he really likes those guys," Jackson said. "I wasn't one of his guys."

Jackson's relationship with the Seahawks began deteriorating in 2004 when Jackson felt he was short-changed on his contract. He continued to be productive on the field but recently did not take part in voluntary team activities.

With San Francisco, he'll have plenty of opportunities to exact revenge, and will do so on a squad he considers a newer version of the Seahawks. Jackson drew parallels between 49ers rusher Frank Gore and the Seahawks' Shaun Alexander, and he said quarterback Alex Smith quickly was becoming like Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck.

"We beat the NFC West champion twice last year in the Seahawks, and I was a big part of (Seattle's) success there from a wide receiver standpoint," he said. "Me bringing my stats and ability over here might put us over the edge."

Coach Mike Nolan said Jackson probably would play the "z" or "flanker" position currently occupied by Arnaz Battle.

"We'll see how that (competition) goes," Nolan said. "It ought to be interesting."

The 49ers also spent Sunday welcoming their two first-round draft picks, linebacker Patrick Willis and offensive tackle Joe Staley, to Santa Clara. Willis said the impact of the past two days finally sunk in when he was given his jersey and saw his name and new number -- 52, an homage to Baltimore's Ray Lewis -- on the back.

"When they put that jersey in my hand, I saw 52 and I'm holding a San Francisco jersey with Willis on the back and I said, 'Man, I truly am blessed at this moment to be here holding this jersey,' " he said.

Willis was one of six defensive players the 49ers selected this weekend. They began the fourth round Sunday by selecting Jay Moore, a defensive end out of Nebraska who likely will be converted to linebacker. They also took Dashon Goldson, a 208-pound defensive back out of Washington, and Joe Cohen, a 315-pound defensive lineman from Florida, in the fourth round.

Their final two picks, Texas cornerback Tarell Brown and Kansas State running back Thomas Clayton, raised some eyebrows because both had been arrested in the past two years.

Nolan, however, insisted the team had done an exhaustive analysis of both players that included sessions with the team psychologist and that the 49ers were convinced they wouldn't be a problem.

"I don't have reservations about the two players we (drafted) at the end because I do believe that they're both good-character people, and that's the key," Nolan said.

How the 49ers fared

Report card

• Day 2 mission: To replace the roster's current bottom-tier players with young players who have better potential and to add one or two players who might become eventual starters.

• Accomplished: Hard to say. Both Jay Moore and Joe Cohen were productive at big college programs, and Moore in particular seems like just the type of " 'tweener" who excels in 3-4 defenses. The two final picks, however, stand out at a time in which character concerns are under the league microscope.

• Grade: C

Scouting the new players

No. 104, Jay Moore, LB, Nebraska, 6-foot-4, 273 pounds

• Comment: Moore is yet another player the 49ers got to know at the Senior Bowl. A hard-working lineman in college who projects as a strong-side linebacker in the 49ers' 3-4 scheme.

• Coach Mike Nolan says: "He's a big, very athletic player who played both up and down at Nebraska. At Nebraska, they had three or four players that we evaluated, and he showed up quite a bit (on film)."

No. 126, Dashon Goldson, DB, Washington, 6-2, 208

• Comment: Big defensive back who played cornerback last year but projects as a safety. A poor 40-yard dash time at the combine might have hurt his draft status.

• Nolan says: "I'd rather take a 4.65-(second) guy who's a good football player than a 4.45-(second) track guy."

No. 135, Joe Cohen, DT, Florida, 6-2, 315

• Comment: A run stuffer at Florida who likely will fit into the 49ers' defense as a nose tackle. The question is whether he's stout enough for the position.

• Nolan says: "I would compare him to Ronald Fields. I think that's a good comparison. And Ronald Fields has done well since he's been here."

No. 147, Tarell Brown, CB, Texas, 5-10, 190

• Comment: Might have been overshadowed by fellow cornerback Aaron Ross, a first-round pick of the New York Giants, and his draft stock might have suffered after a September arrest for weapons and drug possession.

• Nolan says: "A very productive player -- a three-year starter. He also has some ability as a returner."

No. 186, Thomas Clayton, RB, Kansas State, 6-2, 218

• Comment: Was Kansas State's most talented runner over the past two seasons, but run-ins with his coaching staff and the law cut into his playing time. By all accounts a character risk.

• Nolan says: "I don't paint the picture that some others (do). I'm confident in our decisions because we don't take character (issues) lightly."

Remember when we got Wendell Tyler from the RAMS in '83... Seemed to work out pretty well for us in the short term (Roger Craig and him were a lethal tandem). He was a Niner killer in the '82 season (when we lost the last game of the season to the RAMS and didn't make the playoffs). He ended up being a huge asset for us in the 15-1 1984 season.

Jackson could give us a nice 2-4 window boost as a legit #1 guy (if he stays healthty).

Hoops can only hope. :)

Draftees could have big impact
The 49ers expect five of their picks to push for starting jobs.
By Matthew Barrows - Bee Staff Writer
Last Updated 12:10 am PDT Wednesday, May 2, 2007

SANTA CLARA-After three consecutive drafts in which the 49ers have brought in nine or more new faces, personnel chief Scot McCloughan said Wednesday he finally feels good about the team's depth.

McCloughan said all four of the team's first-day draft picks, as well as fourth-rounder Jay Moore, could start next season, or at least have significant roles.

Here's how the draft class will fit into the lineup when the team assembles for its first minicamp Friday:

• Patrick Willis, first round, No. 11 overall: The team's top pick will compete against 10-year veteran Derek Smith at right inside linebacker, where Willis won't have to deal with as many blockers and where he can use his impressive speed. If Willis wins the position early, Smith might move to left inside linebacker -- which does take on blockers -- where he would compete against Brandon Moore.

• Joe Staley, first round, 28: McCloughan said Staley is big enough to play right tackle and nimble enough to play left. Injuries likely will determine where he plays most, but his presence could allow Adam Snyder to move to guard.

• Jason Hill, third round, 76: The San Francisco native will compete with Ashley Lelie at split end. The coaching staff says Hill is fast enough to stretch the field but has the upper-body strength to be an effective blocker.

• Ray McDonald, third round, 97: The best pass rusher in a 3-4 defensive scheme is the right defensive end, and the 49ers want the 285-pound McDonald to compete for the starting job there. His chief competition will be Ronald Fields, a 2005 draft pick who made big strides last season.

• Jay Moore, fourth round, 104: McCloughan said he thought Moore was light on his feet last season as a 273-pound defensive end, and the team will allow him to play outside linebacker at that weight. He will compete with Tully Banta-Cain and Parys Haralson at strong-side linebacker, where the team wants stout players who can stuff the run.

• Dashon Goldson, fourth round, 126: A cornerback last season at Washington, the 208-pounder likely fits into the 49ers' lineup at free safety. His chief competition will be Vickiel Vaughn, a seventh-round draft pick last year.

• Joe Cohen, fourth round, 135: Cohen played defensive tackle last year at Florida and will get a shot at backing up Aubrayo Franklin at nose tackle. Cohen also could compete at left defensive end, where Bryant Young is the starter.

• Tarell Brown, fifth round, 147: Nate Clements, Shawntae Spencer and Walt Harris have the top cornerback spots locked up, but Brown could see time in the team's nickel and dime packages. He will compete against 2006 draft pick Marcus Hudson, B.J. Tucker and Donald Strickland.

• Thomas Clayton, sixth round, 186: Clayton stands 5-10 1/2, weighs 220 pounds and, by all accounts, has the body of Adonis. McCloughan and the 49ers are very high on Clayton and feel he has the potential to be an every-down rusher in the NFL.

I kind of like the idea of running a 4 WR, Ace Back set occasionally with Gore in the backfield and Jackson, Battle, Leilei and either Davis or Hill on routes.

Seems we've got the talent at the skills positions. Think our young Franchise QB is ready to handle that?

And if Willis is as good as he's being billed, he should be starting by week 3.

I think I'm being overzealous, but it's been a while since I've been this excited about the Niners.

Hey, you're not alone in your overzealousness and excitement, thats for sure! I havent been this excited about the Niners since Garcia/Owens miraculous comeback against NY a few years back...oh, wait...I was excited last year, too...hope and promise will do that to you.:D I love the 4 WR set with Gore, and Hicks as our short yardage back. Willis is a stud, and with him and Moore in our secondary, we should be set for quite some time. And holy crap if our corners arent looking good now on D! Man this should be fun!

#57
I'm very excited, great free agency and great draft.

I see us winning the NFC west for sure.
It's not unreasonable. But it's only partially because the Niners have gotten better and mostly because the NFC West is one of the worst divisions in football and probably slid down a few notches.

Arizona is finally working on their O-line, but I don't think it will be enough to drastically improve them.

Seattle is older and I think worse off especially after giving up Jackson.

And St. Louis hasn't really done anything notworthy as far as I can see.

10, maybe even 9 wins could take the division like last year. No reason to think the Niners can't be that team.

#59
I think the Niners will be the surprise team this year , they have added some quality depth through draft and free agency . Nfc west will be interesting with a new coach in Arizona, rams added talent and depth , and the seahawks will try to bounce back from a mediocre season last year . It is also cool that this division has 4 sick running backs. Gore, jackson, alexander, james . This is def the best 4 combo in the league.

Ya think??:D Although I dont know how much of a 'surprise' we'll be, I think we were more of a surprise LAST year, more than anything...going into the draft we were already being talked about quite a bit, so I dont think we'll be sneaking up on anyone. We SHOULD win the NFC West, though.
