I don't go to movies, or anywhere else, in the evenings; that's when basketball comes on. If I'm not at work, I'm home watching the Kings/Bobcats/whoever on League Pass.

After having been too busy to see it while in theaters (by the way, boo to the fact that a full theatrical release lasts only about three weeks these days), I rented Children of Men today. Very, very good I thought. Not always easy to watch, and a bit different than I'd expected -- don't really know why it was different since I was fairly familiar with the story/tone before renting... just felt different, maybe -- but very well done.

Good enough even that I didn't get too bothered by the startling handsomeness of both Clive Owen and Chewitel Enjiofor being wasted in such dirty and unpleasant environments. ;)

Children of Men was the best movie I saw last year. There were subtle art design details that really did it for me; 20 years from now we'll have floating projected TV screens in coffee shops, but the only noticeable change to our fossil fuel burning cars will be a "collision alert" display on our windshields.

I thought it was quite genius considering our current rate/focus of improvement and innovation. Broken down double decker buses with digital advertisements.

Watched Curse of the Golden Flower tonight. I think each of Yimou's last three films have dropped off slightly in terms of story -- Hero was great, House of Flying Daggers was okay, this one had a few weak moments -- but visually, they're just stunning. Insanely beautiful.

I just stayed up way too late to watch a movie I remember some of you really liked. Unique, fascinating and entertaining... Well worth the late night viewing.

It's one of those movies that while I enjoyed to a certain extent, had they cut out about 10% of the totally "drug smoking-induced" elements of the film, I think it could have been MUCH better.

I think I agree with GGG (?) on this one - the visual style is more the film than the film itself is....

I always like to regale with my latest chick flick misadventures, so:

Pride & Prejuice (2005)

And I must say I was impressed -- lacked Austin's nuance and humor, but had a lot of passion. And I had no idea Keira Knightley could actually act -- quite impressed on that front especically.

Two minor points, if I may...

While your title sounds interesting, especially in the light of the steroid controversies, I'm hazarding a guess that you meant "Pride and Prejudice"...

;)

One other point. Of course, Keira can act. She's been paired opposite both Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp and has pretended to ignore each of them at times...

:p

oops.

but how hard can it be to ignore a wooden mannequin and a gay/drunk pirate in mascara? :p

In any case, P & P showed me she had a real acting future beyond rubber octopusses, so that was nice. :)

Edit: it appears that she was actually nominated for an Oscar for her performance, so guess I was not the only one who noticed

Hit the theaters twice while on vacation, saw Blades of Glory and Hot Fuzz.

Blades of Glory was better than I expected, and Hot Fuzz (much like Shaun of the Dead before it) was a pleasant surprise and the cause of more than a few hearty chuckles.
