Artest arrested

By the time there were any legal problems here we'd already rode on his back to elite status...
That was kind of what was on my mind... I dunno... just seemed to me that, if we were at .620 and Ron was carrying the team, the distinction between his on-court and off-court life would be a lot bigger. I've always had kind of mixed feelings on that topic, myself -- to what extent we're paying people to play basketball, and to what extent we expect to own their private lives. Maybe Keon was stoned out of his mind three days a week, but as long as he kept swatting those Dallas balls during the playoffs, it didn't really bother me.

Domestic violence is obviously different, since there is a victim -- malum in se to Brick -- but still, I find the whole topic of players' private lives to be a difficult one.

And, in some situations, both parties can be victim/aggressor.

I do agree, however, that sometimes the private life stuff would be best left private. Not gonna happen with today's media feeding frenzy and the public's demand for instant news. And who among us doesn't play "Law and Order" or "CSI" when we first hear something like that?

Domestic Violence is absolutely nothing to joke about, HOWEVER, we are not privy to the entire situation. We do not live in that house, nor have an intimate relationship with either party involved to be a confidant regarding their life behind closed doors. We have no idea what really went down. One report says shoving. One report mentions injuries. If Ron is guilty of domestic violence, I hope he gets the most severe sentence allowable and has to undergoe treatment. It seems like he has a lot of issues that profesional phychiatric care could help. If he is found not guilty or the charges are dropped, well then I will go on routing for #93 on my team the Kings.
But I refuse to make any kind presumptions now.

Question-Did it ever come out what those personal reasons in NY were?

The real tragedy here is not what will happen to the Kings, but the fact that there are children caught in the middle in this. With a history of some issues between these two, those kids have been in this mess for a long time. Who knows how much damage its caused beyond the visible.:(

Just thought of something. I wonder how much this has to do with the game he missed last week for "personal reasons" Maybe this has been coming for a while between he and his estranged other. The man always gets the sharp end of the sword I suspect it will all be worked out by weeks end.

As fas as basketball goes. Mike and Kevin will be getting 30 apeiece for a while and Garcia will be getting 25 min a game for the same amount of time. could be what Garcia needed as Kev did last year with Bonzi's injury. Geez i just realized John Travolta played in Carrie. Also why in the hell am I watching Carrie. oh sorry was that out loud. A.D.D anyone

Go ahead, but I don't know what relevance will come from any conversation discussing his trade value when details of the actual situation have yet to be released.
even smoke can greatly effect trade value, especially when you're talking about a player with the kind of past like artest.

I'm sure Ron-Ron is merely a victim in all this.

Has anybody ever seen Artest and Mike Tyson in the same room together? One in the same. Kamikaze pilots. I confess to not seeing it at day one of his arrival, but it has been very easy to spot for months now. I'm sure others have seen it in Artest for years, but he is bad news and they should have traded him when they had the chance. Another bad move -- er lack of a move.

i adementally suggested that we should trade artest at the deadline and everyone responded like i was crazy and then something like this happens. funny how that works out, sad but funny.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento Kings forward Ron Artest was arrested Monday and excused indefinitely from the team after a woman said he shoved her to the floor inside his home and prevented her from calling 911.

Ron Artest, shown here in a photo released by the Placer County Sheriff's Dept., was arrested Monday on suspicion of domestic violence and later released on $50,000 bail.

Placer County sheriff's authorities said the woman reported she and Artest were arguing inside the home Monday morning when he pushed her. The argument moved outside when Artest tried to leave in his Hummer, sheriff's Sgt. Andrew Scott said during a news conference.
"It resulted in some pushing," Scott said of the argument. "Mr. Artest had shoved the victim to the floor several times, then he attempted to leave."
The woman threw a pot at the Hummer, shattering its windshield, Scott said. He would not disclose the woman's relationship with Artest but said a 3-year-old girl was inside the house during the incident.
Deputies arrived around 9:30 a.m. at Artest's five-acre estate in the Sacramento suburb of Loomis and arrested him on suspicion of domestic violence, sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin said. He also was arrested on suspicion of using force or violence to prevent the woman from reporting a crime.
"He was very cooperative," Scott said of Artest, found sitting calmly outside the home. "He gave no problems to any of the officers on scene."
Artest, the central figure of the infamous 2004 brawl between Indiana Pacers players and Detroit Pistons fans, was booked into the Placer County Jail and released later on $50,000 bail. His arraignment is scheduled for March 22.
Sheriff's deputies have been called to Artest's home at least once before, but there were no arrests, Erwin said.
Geoff Petrie, the Kings' president of basketball operations, said the team was removing Artest from the team, pending a full investigation.
"The Kings have excused Ron Artest indefinitely from any further participation with the team due to his arrest today for domestic violence," Petrie said in a statement.
Team spokesman Troy Hanson told The Associated Press that Artest had not been suspended and still was being paid.
An emergency protective order obtained by sheriff's officials prevents Artest from returning to his home or contacting the woman until she can obtain a restraining order. Scott said this was normal procedure.
Sheriff's officials said the woman had injuries but would not describe them. She declined medical treatment.
Artest, who joined the Kings from the Indiana Pacers in January 2006, has had previous run-ins with police.
He was at the center of the Nov. 19, 2004 brawl between Pacers players and Pistons fans at The Palace in Detroit. Just when a confrontation between players seemed to be over, Artest, lying on the scorer's table, was hit with a cup filled with an icy beverage. He bolted into the stands in a rage, followed by fist-swinging teammate Stephen Jackson. Artest and teammate Jermaine O'Neal later slugged fans on the court.
Two days later, Artest was suspended for the rest of the season -- 73 games, plus the playoffs -- in a move that cost him almost $5 million.
Artest and Jackson were sentenced to one year of probation and 60 hours of community service after pleading no contest to misdemeanor assault charges. In January, Artest was released from that probation.
Artest has spent nearly 14 months with Sacramento since the Kings acquired him in a blockbuster trade for fan favorite Peja Stojakovic. His short tenure is following a familiar script for the volatile former St. John's star: Initial excitement and outstanding play, followed by disinterest, distractions -- and now, more legal trouble.
In early February, it was revealed that Artest paid $1,942 in boarding and impound fees because some of his dogs had spent a total of 77 nights at the Placer County pound since July. Animal control officers had gone to Artest's five-acre estate seven times in that period in response to callers' complaints about dogs being loose or not being fed.
In 2004, Artest completed anger management for a domestic violence charge, and the mother of his children was charged with the same crime for hitting Artest in 2002.
Other Kings have had trouble, as well. New coach Eric Musselman pleaded no contest in January to driving under the influence of alcohol after an arrest in October. He was ordered to pay $580 in fines and penalties and spend 48 hours on a work project.
Last season, Artest guaranteed the then-struggling Kings would make the playoffs shortly after he arrived, and they surged to the No. 8 seed and an impressive performance in a first-round loss to San Antonio.
Artest's dogged defense and passion fit in well with Sacramento's devoted fans, who adopted him as a community favorite.
This season hasn't been as easy for Artest, who's averaging 18.7 points and 6.6 rebounds while the Kings struggle at 27-32. Sacramento, which hosts Artest's former Indiana teammates on Tuesday night, has battled poor team chemistry and inconsistent play under Musselman.
Though Artest had been a model teammate in his abbreviated first season, he sparked controversy two months ago by indirectly criticizing Mike Bibby's defense. Artest also missed a handful of games with a knee injury that came as news to the Kings -- and last month, he sat out of the Kings' visit to Indiana for undisclosed personal reasons.
The Kings were rumored to be exploring trades for Artest but didn't make a deal at last month's trade deadline.
Sacramento has won its last three games, with Artest playing well in road victories over Portland and the Los Angeles Lakers -- after shaving the word "Kings" into the back of his head.
Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

well hey, i just saved 15% on my car insurance by switching to gieco...
No way dude! congradulations!

But really, I have also noticed that it just seems like artest has changed, not his effort or anything, hes still great. but his attitude is a little worse this year, it might be because of disagreements with the coach but it feels like its more than that. Well, time will tell. weve proven we can play without him. I think we'll be cool till he gets back.

i adementally suggested that we should trade artest at the deadline and everyone responded like i was crazy and then something like this happens. funny how that works out, sad but funny.
Okay, we get it. You're effing brilliant. And you were the only person who thought trading Artest was a good idea.

Of the real issue, it seems the court of public opinion has already given its verdict. I think it is a bit early.

So it was a pushing match indeed. I must say Artest has a funny shaped nogin. But was there a reason to put a frying pan through a window? I'd have to choke somebody for that...jk. Look at the bright side guys maybe now we can get back to losing so we can have a shot at rebuilding.

I was going with my girlfriend to get ice cream at coldstones in Natomas when I noticed something weird was going on. We were walking up to the shop when all of a sudden this scumbag news 10 reporter and video guy were sneaking up behind us and behind parked cars. I was pretty much like what the hell are these people doing. Then I looked over and saw Ron eating dinner with 3 of his buddies at Strings. I watched as these 3 guys ran towards the news camera and held up a big napkin or towel to cover the camera and not let them get any footage of him.

What gets me is that someone must of called and tipped off news 10 that Ron was there eating dinner....

I agree. I don't know how the situation played out, but obviously Ron is not getting the benefit of the doubt here. It seems that the two of them have a very rocky history of pushing eachother around. She actually threw something and broke the windshield as he was leaving, which is hardly the same as someone running for her life and barricading herself behind a locked door to call 911. Does that mean Ron is innocent? No, of course not, I have no idea what really happened, but, frankly neither does anyone else except the two of them and that poor little kid. The one thing that is clear to me after reading these stories is that kids do NOT belong in the middle of the type of the relationship those two seem to have.

I'm going to wait and see what comes out. Ron may very well have been way out of line, in which case I hope they throw the book at him. But I'm going to save my judgement until I know a little more.

What I do not understand is the quick reaction from the team in response to this.
IMHO, there is NEVER an excuse for domestic violence, especially in the presence of a child. From the few reports that have been released, both parties seem to be at fault. I am from the old school of thought - a man should never hit a woman, but I also believe that the opposite is true as well. Since we do not know exactly what happened, we should not be quick to judge.
In most cases, teams wait to make any decisions concerning players in trouble with the law. It has been common practice to let the courts make a decision first and then the team reacts to the guilty/not guilty verdict. Why did the King's organization act so quickly today?
I am not disagreeing with the decision, in fact, I applaud it. I am just shocked that it happened so quickly.

I don't think everyone can judge a rocky relationship like this, especially if she's throwing a frying pan through the window. The only question I have is if this is his wife? I read he and his wife had problems before...maybe he likes hooking up with drama chicks if she isn't?

Can only assume that the team wanted to keep the drama from being too big a distraction in practices/games. Tell Ron to take some time from the start, rather than creating the possibility of Ron needing to miss games with little notice.

I too wonder why it was so quick. It wasn't a "Ron will stay with us until we get more details. We'll have to investigate further to see if Ron was at fault and to what extent" It was basically "Ron is off the team until we figure it out what to do with him" Type of thing. It sounded to me like it was presuming guilt. At least, that's what I took out of it. But in this case it might be a good thing, being the media frenzy that would be taking place at the games and practices.

This is a public relations move. Remember this is Ron Artest here, the guy who got the longest suspension ever in pro sports cause he whooped a fans *** at a game.

Many people here are saying don't be too quick to judge Ron, but if your the owners of a business that generates money because people love the team, and your main star may have just beat his wife, you better do something! You can't just have him back at games!

Walking around in the UNIFORM, doing the shootaround.. no matter what really happened, all people will think of when they see him now and maybe for a while is WIFE BEATER. You simply absolutely cannot have poeple connecting that thought with the image of the Kings, if you're the owners. At least not in this culture at this time. Too negative a stigma.

The Placer County sheriff office said the victim broke the windshield with a kitchen pot to stop Ron from leaving. He did not leave.

And the Kings, the organization and the fans will do fine with this situation and go forward--there is no recourse. Boo to the poster that said this team was like the 2004 Trailblazers. They had multiple players arrested multiple times. We have one player with two felony charges against him. ONE PLAYER! This team has to come together now and doesn't need that kind of talk.

Domestic violence cannot be tolerated no matter who the aggressor is, man or woman, period. We must simply wait for the facts to come out and hope justice is done--there is nothing to gain from making judgements now. This is about a family that is in real trouble--so I wish good thoughts and help for the family, especially the children. Annie.
