Webber through as a Sixer.

Webber told ESPN.com on Wednesday night that 17 of the league's 30 teams have already called to register interest in his services, but the free agent-to-be hopes to sign with one of the following contenders: Miami and his hometown Detroit Pistons in the East; San Antonio, Dallas and the Los Angeles Lakers in the West. "This is the best I've felt in three years," Webber said in a phone

A reunion of Jason Williams and Chris Webber ...

That would be the ultimate irony. And that's where I'm putting my money. Miami would be the perfect fit.

Well, Miami does tend to take guys past their prime, but from what i heard they are trying to stray from that...then again, what i said first stands as a fact.

We're not talking about Mo Taylor or some other mediocre power forward. We're talking about Chris Webber.

My money is still on Miami for a couple of reasons, including the chance to rub Philadelphia's face in it...

Yea Chris Webber, the guy thats been playing like Taylor lately, same Chris Webber right?

I know, i know, he wasnt happy in Philly, but seriously, i just dont think he has it anymore, hes gettin pretty old, hes slow, and his knees are killin him out there, i love Webber, so hopefully he can prove me wrong that he still has it.

Miami picking him up is likely, i wasnt doubting that, i was simply stating that Webber is past his prime, and the rumor going around is that the Heat are trying to get rid of the older "past their prime" guys for fresh meat.

VF how would you feel if he signed with LA?(just wondering, I for one would throw up 50+ times because I'd be so disgusted)

I don't play "what if" BMiller. I don't know how I'd feel. I won't even think about it until/unless I have to.

I don't see him going to LA, however. I think it's more likely either Miami or - as is being rumored elsewhere - that he'll finish his career in his hometown of Detroit.

And the rich get richer...

Well, I wish Chris well as always. I would HATE to see him in LA. I think Miami would be a crazy situation. Detroit would be interesting to say the least. Somewhere in Texas I think would be best for him. I just hope he gets what he's searching for.

but seriously, why wouldn't we want him back, for the vet. min. of course...he could bring some stability in our game with his high I.Q. game, which btw we don't seem to now have, he could be an excellent influence on the young guys, something like what corliss does. And best of all, the chance to retire as a King. Also, the Kings have been throwing money around with no purpose at all (Ostertag, Taylor, now Hart), why not the minimum on C-Webb? I think if the Maloofs and Petrie ask he will not hesitate to come here (like Pollard). I think his great memories in Sac could scale the tip of him deciding to go to another team...imho

Webber will not return to Sacramento. You can take that to the bank. At this point, he'll sign with a contender to make one more shot at getting the jewelry...and he'd be nuts not to.

The problem for CWebb at this point, as I see it, is that there is not an "ideal" situation for him to move into right now, at least not if he is hoping for a Karl Malone-move-to-the-Lakers type situation where he steps into a team making a run at a title that has a need for a PF to play 25 to 30 minutes per game.

In fact, I do not think any of the 5 teams he has mentioned provide a perfect fit:

Miami - Haslem performs pretty well for the Heat, and provides athleticism that CWebb just hasn't shown since his knee injury. Considering that Shaq and Zo are the centers, and those two players are not exactly spry anymore, either, adding CWebb to the mix doesn't seem to be ideal from a defensive perspective. I doubt he would be handed Haslem's starting slot upon arrival.

Detroit - With Sheed, McDyess and Nazr on the roster, he's going to be in a 4-man rotation. Considering that the Pistons players pride themselves on giving effort on defense, and considering that CWebb's main problem since his knee injury has been on the defensive side of the ball, I'm not sure this move makes much sense, even if CWebb would like to play for his "hometown" team to finish up his career.

Spurs - Well, Duncan is already there, and Popovich doesn't like guys that can't play defense first. CWebb could potentially steal starter's minutes at C since Oberto and Elson haven't exactly torn the league up this year, but CWebb's addition doesn't help the Spurs with their biggest weakness at the moment (defending athletic bigs).

Mavs - Dirk may be playing as well as anyone in the NBA right now, and Diop and Dampier eat up all of the C minutes. The Mavs also like to use a small unit with Dirk at C and Devean George at PF because George is an effort/hustle guy...I don't know if CWebb would fit into that frontcourt rotation all that well, and as the Mavs' front office has already indicated, they could only see him getting 15 minutes per game at most, which is close to half of CWebb is hoping for.

Lakers - at this point, due to all of the injuries to their frontcourt, this would be CWebb's best chance to make an immediate impact. I'm not certain whether he would continue to get the same opportunities once Kwame Brown gets healthy, though, although CWebb would still be the Lakers third PF/C option at worst at that point (in the mix with Bynum and Brown). I'd have to think that Phil would rather run CWebb at the PF than Radmanovic IF CWebb can fit into the triangle.

However, even if the Lakers are his best chance to earn minutes, they are easily the least likely of the 5 teams to have a good shot at making the NBA Finals. I think the Mavs have the best shot, but CWebb runs the risk of not fitting into the rotation, which could lead to him waiving a towel for a winner.

The whole Webber thing here reminds me a bit of Bill Walton in his late career. Injury riddled, but once one of the best, still with the brains and talent to be a major contributor to a veteran team. Just has to be the rigtht fit.

how about the suns, they might be interested in joining him with jalen on the bench. I think CW already has his team decided and most likely it could be the heat. Shaq and Webb have a good relationship and lots of players for some reason want to play with Shaq

Webber On The Market After Sixers Buyout
In the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, Joe Juliano writes “less than two years after acquiring Chris Webber as a scoring partner for Allen Iverson, the 76ers agreed with him on a buyout of the rest of his contract, president and general manager Billy King said last night. King said the buyout agreement had been sent to the NBA office, which signed off on it late last night. The Sixers are expected to place Webber on waivers this morning, and if he is not claimed within 48 hours, he will become a free agent. The Dallas Mavericks and New Jersey Nets reportedly are very interested in Webber, 33, as are the New York Knicks.”

I'm very ignorant about all the ins and outs of the NBA contract rules. What does the "not claimed within 48 hours mean"? I assumed he was a free agent after the buyout?

I think it means that the Sixers have to put Webber on waivers before he's eligible to sign with another team -- basically anyone could pick him up at his current salary (obviously not going to happen) and once that period expires he'd be able to sign with a team of his choosing.

Cwebb should play for the Rockets. Tmac is heating up, with Webber joining the team and Yao Ming coming back in a month, the Rockets will be ready to contend.

I can't see Petrie eating crow and taking Webber back at any price.

Unfortunately, I think the Lakers are probably the best fit for his remaining talents. I'm not sure they are a sure bet for a championship, thankfully. But no team really is a sure bet.

Malone and Payton both went to the Lakers for a ring, and didn't get one.

Miami is a long way from being the team they were in the playoffs last year. Sure, maybe when Shaq gets back... maybe.

Dallas is probably the best team right now. But I don't see Webber fitting in there at all.

Arizona, no way. Webber can't run and that's all they do. And they'd never take the ball out of Nash's hands to give to Webber.

Houston? San Antonio? Detroit?

Did anyone mention Minnesota? I could almost see him there. He's a totally different player than KG and I could see them on the floor together.

Money shouldn't be an issue for any team. I'm sure the Sixers built a clause into the buyout that said that the money from his new contract would be subtracted from what the Sixers are paying him, meaning there's no way for Webber to make any additional money from a new contract.

That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing him in Houston but amazingly at this point, another fab five player (Juwan Howard) is actually outplaying Webber. Juwan's apparently drinking the same gatorade that Mutombo is drinking because both of those guys are playing out of their minds. Also, he wouldn't be a starter on the Rockets. We start a midget power forward (Chuck Hayes) because he's got Dennis Rodman-esque rebounding skills.

I'm thinking Detroit (where he would probably start over Nazr Mohammed)

And that's just wrong. Mitch, Vlade, now possibly Webb? Can we have any of these big keystone players to the franchise to ourselves without purple and bleeping gold eventually sucking them up?
