I like Bonzi, I really, really do. But at five years I'm really starting to feel that this whole thing will hold back the development of our young guys. We're not contending for a championship this year unless some VERY big and pleasantly surprising moves come about.

I'm liking the sound of a S&T more and more. That way Bonzi could get more money from a team who can't straight up offer more money. They can take the salary on though through a trade. If we could get back a piece we need, this would be a good move. That way Kevin and Francisco can continue to develop as well as Douby.

It doesn't appear other teams are knocking down the door to throw large sums of money at Bonzi...

I don't think anyone will be offering HUGE amounts, but maybe a little more than what the Kings want to offer, and if that team has a piece we could use it could work out.

Spare parts do not equal Bonzi, and barring something extraordinary that's what you normally get in S&Ts.

What about spare parts and a 1st? Not that that necessarily equals Bonzi either, but the teams interested in Bonzi don't really seem to have the parts to make it work for us. A pick or two could at least be used in a deal later in the summer.

Okay, give me some examples of teams that are offering more for Bonzi AND have a piece we'd be interested in...

For the most part, teams who had expressed at least a passing interest in Bonzi have already made significant deals. There are others, but they really don't have anything we would consider more valuable than Bonzi.

There just isn't a hotbed of interest out there, at least not that's being talked about. And I don't trust agents, as I've said many times before. If there was anything Phillips could use as leverage to get thing moving faster, there's not a doubt in my mind it would already have been leaked to someone, somewhere...

I think Bonzi will be here. I hope the Kings do as a lot of us have said and give him the 5/$40 as a compromise. He'll be happy, we'll be happy, and we can shift focus to filling the other needs this team has.

ESPN insider reports that Kings offered Wells a 5 year, 36 million dollar contract and Bonzi wants more. Also Nuggets are interested in Bonzi but cant offer more than 5 year 30 million.

First I read about the rumored offer. I am actually pretty happy with that offer. Very smart by Petrie and he must of had his ear to the ground on interest from other teams. Or more likely, he knew what the other interested teams were able to offer under the cap.

I am not worried about the 5 years in length, I think thats good with the amount. No way we keep Bonzi if we only offered him 3 years.

so would this mean Martin is set to come off the bench for at least 3 more years. If so good luck keeping him after his current contract.

yeah, because kevin martin has showed on numerous occasions that he's a childish primadonna who is only interested in starting.

How do you figure this means Kevin will come off the bench for three more years?

If we resign Bonzi, the starting slot is his - for now. It doesn't mean he holds the pink slip to slot in perpetuity. If you want to build the best possible team NOW to contend for 2006-2007, you worry about NOW. You don't keep throwing away now to try and predict 2009.

fyi, a 5yr $36m deal comes out to 6m, 6.6m, 7.2m, 7.8m and 8.4m per year. Great deal for Bonzi. I think GP should go up a little to $38m, but I'm glad he's not over paying for talent like everyone else in the league. Great piece of negotiating by GP. Hope he sticks to his guns. Paying Bonzi anymore will make his contract impossible to move in the final years, ie KThomas. Hopefully it's just a 4 years guaranteed w/ a team option for the 5th.

Bonzi's a good talent, but he hasn't done much the past 3 yrs except have a great playoff series. based on the number of games he's played, age, and his numbers, I can' justify giving Bonzi more than $40m contract.

The most anyother team can offer is ~$30m
5.2m, 5.6m, 6m, 6.5m, and 6.9m

I think $40m would be fine, if GP went up in the value of it, anything else more than that would be pushing it...I think that if Bonzi wants more, incentives and kickers can be attatched to his deal that provide more incentives for both sides involved.

The way I see the whole Bonzi thing is ;

A) I am a huge Martin fan so I would like to see him start.
B) Bonzi is 30 years old. Does not mean he's old, but 5 year contract might be a bit much.
C) Garcia would kind of be 3rd in line for a starting job with us.
D) Douby would not be getting minutes (which I wouldn't expect much until his 2nd year)
E) We have a couple contracts coming off the books at the end of the year (Williamson/Potapeko/Hart) and if we didn't sign Wells and saved the exception than we could use the money next year to try to sign a bigger name at the PF/C pos.

I really do like Wells and woud love to see him back. But three years is the max. Starting one year, and giving Martin the job for his final two.

3-years 21 million was never a realistic possibility with the offer to Bonzi, Gary.

He'd be gone already if that was our offer and didn't budge much.

I bet it goes to 40 million over 5 years. I've thought that's at the most, and is fair enough for him.

1. I have been a HUGE Kevin Martin fan from the very beginning and I have no problem with him getting a little more experience coming off the bench.
2. The whole age thing is just silly, IMHO. It's been addressed pretty fully by Bricklayer in another thread. You don't worry about year 5 right now unless you're willing to give up on years 1-3.
3. Garcia is nowhere near ready to start for the Kings. He would actually benefit from another year - at least - playing off the bench. He has potential but he is not NBA-starter material right now.
4. If Douby is going to be our backup PG, and there's every indication this might, in fact, be the plan (wave buh-bye to Hart), then keeping Bonzi would NOT affect Quincy's minutes or development.
5. That makes no sense whatsoever.

My main problem with this kind of argument is you assume you can just offer some piddly contract and the agent will accept it. That's not the case. You pay for value, and Bonzi has value.

#57
Gary, for us to try to sign a big name PF/C (are there are POSSIBLY available at the end of this year? dont think so) in the range of 12 mil per year, we would have to be 12 mil under the cap... and the cap is what.. 42 mil right now? Put down the pipe

I actually have another prospective, in that Bonzi and his agent should accept what the market will bare. I'm not saying GP should low-ball them, but the current offer seems appropriate for Bonzi's performance in the last few years. We shouldn't feel compelled to overpay b/c Martin and Francisco aren't ready to start.

And Bonzi and his agent may well accept the offer they've been given. It's ONLY July 9. If Bonzi and Phillips want to wait just a bit to see if they get any other offers, that's their right. People are sooooo impatient. They can't sign a contract before July 12 anyway so this early rush to promise to sign is just pre-July 12 hype.

Hopefully GP's actions aren't predicated on Bonzi's signing. Lossing him won't be the end of the world esp w/ Martin waiting in the wing. The team has far more pressing needs in the interior that need address regardless of weither Bonzi's back or not.

Like you mentioned before VF21, not hearing anything in the news in probably a good thing b/c GP seems to like working in ultra secrecy. Hopefully our faith/trust in him won't be misplaced this off season.
