Wrong... Bonzi has said REPEATEDLY that it's not just about money. I simply do not understand the rationalization of "contract year" in this case. Bonzi has been agood performer throughout his career when he's had decent playing time. Why on earth would we trade him at this point? Are you really assuming he'll tank and his trade value will decline in the next year or so, should Petrie decide to move him?
Kevin Martin and Francisco Garcia can develop without us losing a key player. And yes, Bonzi is a key. You don't get rid of warriors.
I always have extreme reservations about athletes (especially one with a history like Bonzi's) when they say, "It's not about the money." Here's some reasons we should trade him though.
1. Stock has never been higher.
2. Younger, cheaper players (Martin, Garcia)are ready for more time. Monia might be decent with some time as well.
3. Character issues could severely damage his trade value in the future. He acted up last year and that is how we got him for an injury-riddled Bobby Jackson. Imagine trying to trade him if he acts up and if we have him signed to a fat deal. It would be nearly impossible.
4. We need frontcourt help and some bench players. Trading Bonzi could provide it.
5. Ron Artest does similar things as Bonzi and is at his best when he's down on the block. When Bonzi is down there, Ron is forced out to the perimiter. Ron's field goal percentage in a Kings uni last year was an abysmal 38%. He needs more touches in the post and less jump shots.
6. By no means is he ancient, but he is getting a little bit older. If we give him a new contract, he'll be near 35 by the time it is done.
7. We have a lot of big contracts, adding another long-term deal could really handicap us in the future.
