HARRY GILES (merged)

He has been a delight to watch and follow for me so far, I think they will bring him along slowly to assure his body remains healthy. That’s the approach I prefer. He is certainly living up to his reputation.

I don’t think he’ll start this year. But I think we have ourselves a future starter at the 4 position. He is such a unique player and can play alongside almost anyone. But I think he still needs to get stronger befor playing 30+ minutes. Plus, our vets need run due to their contract statue.

What's surprised me most has been his intensity and motor. The kid is a fearless competitor, I love it. Really hope he can stay healthy. We need to be bring him along slowly this year, especially starting the season.

he was brought along slowly by sitting out all last season and even before that....the precautions have been made. It's time to give the kid burn if he warrants it and by what he's shown so far, he's earned playing time and then some.

The biggest suprise is that jumpshot he never flashed it in HS and all the hype didn’t involve his jumper. Than out of nowhere it looks automatic

Doesn’t guarantee it would transfor Derrick Rose had multiple years to get a decent jumper.
I was mostly just joking around about that.

I actually thought Giles' and Bagley's shots would look the opposite. I thought it would be Giles who would have a handful of air balls and I thought Bagley's would look more steady. Small sample size of course but Giles has surprised me on that front. Although he did have that one shot from the elbow that bounced off the top left corner of the back board a few games ago....which was quite possibly one of the worst shots I've ever seen!

But seriously, I hyped him up quite a bit in the weeks leading up to SL and he's even exceeded my expectations.

Me too I thought Gil’s would be the one clogging the paint with no outside shot. Now that shot looks good and so does the handle and quickness.

I think Giles can be a 20ppg guy

Given the number of players we have for the 4-5 position, all of whom need and deserve minutes (maybe not ZBo, but he'll get them anyway), I would be very surprised if he gets lot of court time in the beginning. In fact, it might not be a bad idea to rotate him/Bagley and Skal to G league from time to time for short stints to get them regular minutes.

Say this with a touch of selfishness too. I live in Tracy, and would get an opportunity to watch them in Stockton :)

Huh?

It seems to me there is roughly 0% chance Giles ever plays in the G-league.

Why would he?
I think he is arguably the Kings best player and the other players already know it. He might come off the bench to start the season but it won’t be long before his play pushes others aside.

G-league for Dirty Harry? forget about it...

Yeah. Coming in to Summer League, I would have been happy if Giles wound up being a rotation player for us (like a younger Kosta Koufos). Now though, I'm half convinced he's going to be the best player on our team and a multi-time all star.

I like your post and wanted to point out a potential trend. I'm sure obious to many already.

The red shirted high potential, injury and or other situation that allows a player to spend a year out type player, i.e. Dirty Harry, JoJo ( more than a year) I believe will become more and more prominent.

I think the limited sample size of these type of "groomed rookies" shows an interesting potential shift, however minor, in the dynamics of the league.

Curious as to your thoughts

I think it's very well possible that it becomes a trend. You can see from the Kings trainers videos that this isn't the stone age anymore where they just get an x ray and then see what happens after that. The technology they use in testing and rehabbing these athletes has gone up exponentially the last 5 years and places like that P3 training facility in SoCal are world leaders in this technology.

ACL tears aren't as big a deal as they used to be. They're still serious but they aren't career enders anymore. Maybe some day they'll have the science down to where it's like Tommy John surgery in baseball where it's like damn near every pitcher has it at some point and it doesn't destroy their careers like it used to.

not only that midrange, but his post moves, fadeaways and that running half hook with both left and right have looked good so far. add to that the three and that is super versatile. i mean if all of that holds up, how do you stop someone like that? we will see how that goes with the larger sample size.

speaking of hype, one thing that looked worse than hyped, to me, is his passing. he had bunch of these turnovers where he sees this "great pass" but he is too slow/obvious/imprecise in the execution and turns it over....

To be fair, he's mostly been playing with a bunch of scrubs he just met and Frank Mason, who has the off-the-ball situational awareness of a moldy potato.

That didn't take long, huh.... Its gonna take a bunch for someone to supplant Bogdan for me.
Not to sure yet about "best player" but the potential is definitely there.
Agreed. Right now if I was building my fantasy team and had my pick of Kings players I would be torn between Fox, Bogi and Giles.

I think there are better odds that Giles makes an appearance in the Rising Stars challenge rather than G-league.

Look, I'm as excited and optimistic as anyone else about Harry, but let's see him in real NBA action in a proper structure before anointing him. I hate to sound like a sourpuss, but we need to develop 3 young bigs, evaluate Willie, and explore trade options for Kosta/Randolph. There are only so many minutes you can hand out, so some guys will get the shaft. The vets will not be sent to G-league, and it's possible that in the process Giles/Bagley/Skal see limited court time.

Young players, even good ones, often play inconsistently, and in our structure, where minutes might be rationed, it may be even more so. If we are able to resolve the crowd upfront, this discussion will be moot. Else, we should not discount the idea of them spending some time in Stockton. The aim should not be to be the best player on the team, but to be one of the best in the league. I think that regular and consistent minutes will be useful, that they are more likely to get in the G league.
