It's not like baseball though, in that you can quickly go to the bench, bring a guy in, then put the other player back out.
Malone had a much shorter leash with DWill, and the team is all the better for it. I'm not saying send Sessions to the fiery depths of hell, but I am saying to give Ray a shot in that situation. If he makes the right passes, defensive rotations, etc, it wouldn't be the first time a vet lost some PT to a kid.
As for massaging egos, I get that wrt to your star players and promising rookies. Sessions isn't in either category, and it just might be enough to light a fire underneath him. I don't know if he's just another guy who feels he should be starting or is just slumping, but it would certainly serve as a good wake up.
