This was a head scratching move from the get go...that is what happens when you hire somebody that high of a position only after a few years of the guy retiring.

Well the more interesting thing was that he was basically the only guy from the old guard who they didn't immediately can. I suppose the sins of having once received a paycheck from Maloof Enterprises caught up to him eventually. Maybe he was kept on for a one year transitional phase or some such.

Typical of Jason Jones to not really give us anything concrete. I yearn for the days when beat reporters actually reported, instead of merely tweeting rumors. Even something as mundane as a brief summary of his career with the Kings, both as a player and then as part of the front office, would have been nice. Of course, Jones would have to do some actual research to come up with that.

From Wikipedia:

He is the current director of player personnel for the Sacramento Kings of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He is also the general manager of the Reno Bighorns, the Kings' minor-league affiliate. He last played in the NBA for the Kings.

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised the Hawks would be an obvious choice. I know he's thought highly of around the league. Such a low key quiet guy, never heard much about him having a career after basketball, maybe he'll be in the running for their GM job.

Was this some kind of a "sympathy" job to make up for retiring early with knee problems. Did he lose $ from his partial injury contract clause. I'm sure SAR is a Low Key coach, but I feel like he was cashing checks and possibly just coasted.

I've always believed this was kinda the case with SAR's Kings job.
It's complete guesswork on my part, but I'm glad someone who was likely not qualified is no longer in the position.

I mean,... I always liked him as the player. It's upsetting when he came to the Kings, battling for court time with Kenny Thomas, broken jaw wired shut, lost weight and played through it. The knees just shut him down.
But he got some kind of "hush" appeasement deal. I never noticed any kind of his coaching recognition at all. The new FO must have slipped him out the back door.

I'm going on memory here, dangerous. If I recall correctly when he got the "office" job, insurance had paid off his remaining player contract. If he had played again, the team would've been liable for his salary. The job at the time seemed like it may have been insurance from that happening.

Despite that being the case or not, indications were he was good at his job. The "new FO" had no need to slip him out the back door, it would've been perfectly understandable for them not to have retained him when they took over. I suspect they kept him because they saw value in him. What changed, I don't know.

There is a lot of speculation here that doesn't make any sense. PDA gushed about him when they took over, unless he just was terrible OR had huge differences of opinions with the team, I cannot see how this isn't either a mutual decision or his decision to leave. If he is going to ATL, the no comment by Kings makes the most sense because there are probably a lot of details to be worked out.

One can speculate about why the Maloofs or Petrie might have given him his job with the organization, but the new ownership owed him nothing. They totally cleaned house, but kept him. SAR had a terrific reputation around the league, and I suspect that PDA had work related conversations with him at some point prior to either of them working together for the Kings. There are a multitude of possible reasons for his departure, and it always amazes me that some will always focus on the negative possibilities.

This is good news.

What has SAR really shown to still be with the Kings anyways?

He might also be one of the reasons why this franchise/players sucked for so many years now.

No.

But, it's likely going to clear the way for a perhaps more effective person aligned with the vision of the coach/leadership.

No..
SAR can do things other than basketball and do them well. He's actually a really smart person.

I wouldn't be surprised if Atlanta is trying to lure him and the Kings are letting him take the opportunity if it's there.
This was my first impression when I first heard of this. I guess you can't blame him. If a better opportunity comes knocking you have to take advantage. Not too many of these NBA jobs to go around.
