Don't need to include both Williams and Terry. Landry & Terry OR Landry & Williams would get the deal done. If Detroit was open to either deal I think they'd prefer Williams as he gives them both cap relief and a stopgap SF whereas Terry likely only offers cap relief since I question whether he'd play a game for the Pistons.
I disagree. There is a reason I included both.
This would be our team if we included only Williams:
Payroll: $77.03 mil (.03 mil over the luxury tax & 3.97 mil below the tax apron - these numbers jump to .51 mil over the luxury tax & 3.49 mil below the tax apron if we trade Terry instead)
PG - Collison/McCallum/Terry
SG - Stauskas/McLemore/Ellington
SF - Gay/Casspi
PF - Smith/Evans/Moreland
C - Cousins/Thompson
If you want to add a third SF and/or third C, you're going to be right up against that tax apron (not to mention you'll have to pay even more tax). That''ll limit you to trades where you are sending out more money than you receive in order to preserve the $5.3 MLE and avoid paying more tax money..
This would be our team if we included both Terry and Williams:
Payroll: $71.18 mil (5.82 mil below the luxury tax & 9.82 mil below the tax apron)
PG - Collison/McCallum
SG - Stauskas/McLemore/Ellington
SF - Gay/Casspi
PF - Smith/Evans/Moreland
C - Cousins/Thompson
This gives the team plenty of space to sign a third PG, third SF, and third C to fill out the roster, allows them to make trades where they take back more salary, makes them non-taxpayers, and it assures them that they will have their $5.3 mil MLE next year.
Now would I take the deal if they wanted only Williams or Terry? Yes, but I would rather include both for the added benefits.
