Hall of Famer
Don't know if anyone has mentioned this already but a three way deal with the Knicks would work as Phil Jackson is rumored to be trying to move JR Smith and supposedly interested in Kings forwards.

Kings
Outgoing: Carl Landry, Derrick Williams
Incoming: Josh Smith

Pistons:
Outgoing: Josh Smith
Incoming: Derrick Williams, JR Smith

Knicks:Outgoing: JR Smith
Incoming: Carl Landry

For the Pistons it means a starting SF in Williams on a one year tryout and a backup SG and 6th man in JR Smith who only has a year left on his deal after this season meaning quite a lot of cap relief and some usable wings in the meantime.

Most importantly it lets the Kings keep Thompson as a backup PF/C. I think that's a big deal, but I think PDA would much rather move JT and keep Landry which I think is a bad decision.
That would be ideal, and a trade I'd be excited about....Smoove at PF would be great next to Cousins (as long as he stays away from the bad shots). Getting rid of Landry is icing on the cake.

I agree with the bold type though.. PDA has been trying to move JT since he got here, which I agree is dumb. We get a starter like Smith at the 4, JT is exactly the type of player you want as a 3rd big. Landry....Not so much.

Hmm, lots of interesting rumors. I don't hate the idea of Smith at PF for us though he's not an ideal fit. If we're making a play for Smith I think I look at it two ways:

(1) He cannot under any circumstances start at SF. As soon as he attempts more than 2 threes per game his overall productivity plummets and you're not going to stop him from shooting camped out there on the perimeter. Which means SVG taking over in Detroit has to mean Smith is on the way out one way or another. And we're committing to an under-sized lineup without a stellar backup C.

(2) Smith becomes the new lynchpin in the Rajon Rondo off-season plan and Rudy Gay becomes expendable. It's possible Rondo is the one guy who can keep Cousins, Smith, and Gay all well-fed and happy (in basketball terms) but you're in luxury tax territory here for a team with a lot of question marks. It could be fun as hell though, not gonna lie.

While I'd strongly prefer a move which brings in a low-usage defensive specialist in the frontcourt, Smith does at least have defensive credentials to go with his shot chucking. Looking at the salary cap numbers, I think the Smith deal probably means Rudy Gay is gone in a year. He has to be unless we win the lottery somehow and get our PG there. We know Collison isn't the long-term plan so whether it's Rondo or Bledsoe targeted for a max deal, we're not bringing in Smith and a max salary PG and re-signing Rudy. We probably shouldn't give up Williams in this deal because we'd be right back in no SF territory next year. We'd be doing them a favor taking on Smith's deal at this point. We don't need to do them two favors and hand over young talent with our expiring contracts.

I wonder how many people are still anxious to get rid of Ben after he put up 22, 6, and 4 today on 7-11 shooting, 2-4 threes, 6-6 from the line, 1 steal, 1 block, and 3 TOs. That's the whole package right there and he's 21 years old. Stauskas has shown some intriguing tools but he hasn't started a game in the NBA yet.

I can't understand what the big rush is to unload lottery level talent for overpaid veterans. It cost Detroit nothing to sign Smith as a free agent last year, just cap space. Why should we give up one or more of our limited assets to correct their mistake? They get expirings and bench fodder or it's no deal. Josh Smith is a decent player but he's not make or break for us.

re: Ben. Ben has yet to show some fundamental skills and feel for the game at his position. I don't worry about his shot, I worry about the space between his ears.

Did you see the game today? I've seen a lot of progress in his decision-making and his skill level. I look at his skillset and his athleticism and I could see him really having a big impact in a certain kind of lineup -- particularly a lineup with a skilled playmaker at PG and a dominant big in the paint. That's why I'm wary of giving up on Ben at least until we know whether or not we can get Rondo because I can see those two complimenting each other so well.

I like Ben and Dwill for that matter but if u get a chance at a proven player you go for it.

Proven to be what though? Josh Smith is a terrific athlete and an active defender who also happens to be a tweener and a bit of an undisciplined chucker. His current team can't wait to get rid of him. Like Rudy Gay he's a very good "almost All-Star" with some very well defined strengths and weaknesses. I understand the frustration with young players who sometimes seem like they have all the potential in the world and sometimes seem like they're never going to get it. I understand the impatience. But there's nothing I fear more than trading away future All-Stars too soon for "almost All Stars" who are already past their peak and expensive.

Generally when trades are talked about for this long they never actually happen. Not saying it can't happen but it seems unlikely at this point.
