Kings active in trade talks?

If the Kings had the #1 pick, it would be hard to draft.. I honestly don't want Parker since we have Gay now. Parker plays no defense, and that really hurts his game. I think Wiggins might be worth it, but the kings do need a pg. If not from the draft, I'm not sure where they could get one from. If we did get the 1st overall pick, I'd trade back with teams who have two 1st round picks, or if they aren't high enough, I'd trade back for a 5-10 this year and a 1st round pick next year. I don't think we need the 1st pick imo.
Seriously, what the hell are you talking about? Parker isn't far from the top of college ball in defensive win shares. He's not a lockdown defender but to say he doesn't play defense is just complete nonsense.

I don't know how any judgment can be made on Parker's defense as he plays the center position in a variety of zone. He drifts around presumably to help. What are people seeing? The fact he doesn't play man on man defense means nothing in this defensive strategy.

Yes, the Kings could use additional veteran mentoring, and yes, it is debatable whether Miller is the type of veteran they are looking to get. It sure gives me some doubt about his ability to strengthen the Kings culture when he's on the bench yelling at the Denver head coach. On the other hand, there's no doubt in my mind that if he put his mind to it he could mentor IT, Jimmer, McCallum and whatever other young guard the Kings would bring in. He's one of the higher BBIQ guys in the league.
So was Jason Kidd. I am flat against going out and getting Miller, despite really liking him as a player, but would acquiesce if it meant dumping salary for Thornton or JT.

Fundamentals can be taught. Plays can be taught. BBIQ is something you either have or you don't. Howard Eisley never made the leap to a top-tier point guard, despite being mentored by one of the greatest point guards of all time. You just can't teach people to see the seams and passing lanes before they open up and make those snap judgments. It's why the Steve Youngs and John Elways of the world are so rare.

Perhaps different people are using this ambiguous term, BBIQ, in different ways. I never thought of it as something that could be taught although I admit I am stuck on the use of the term IQ as IQ is something a person is born with and not taught. Perhaps there should be terms like BBIQ and BBKnowledge as in my mind they can be different things.

I would really like to see a trade like this around the deadline.

We offer then a decent big in Thompson, and expiring contract in Jimmer and assuming at the trade deadline we are still in the 5-7 range for pick we remove our hold on the pick. Maybe we bump up to the 8-9 pick at best. This way we get a player and position we desperately need, add a veteran and aren't throwing another 19-21 year old in their with Boogie and whomever were retain from this group.

This give Chicago a replacement big (sorta) and cuts about $6MM a year in salary they also get the most benefit out of the 1st round pick they traded for.

I can't see Chicago doing this unless they're just flat out wanting to rebuild. Even then I doubt they take on a contract like JT. It would probably have to be for all expiring contracts, or we would have to give up a draft pick.

I have always though you either had it or you don't (BBALL IQ). That's why John Stockton and Jeff Hornacek were so good. You could tell they played basketball like a game of chess and always played like they were three moves ahead of everyone else. That kind of stuff can be taught but if you don't have the mental capacity or the snap judgment to use it then it would do you no good.

It kind of bums me out that a lot of the players now seem kind of dumb, and only in it for themselves. The game isn't as fun to watch when you have 5 individuals on the floor rather than 5 teammates that all know what every other person on the floor is doing before they do it.

We would be giving up a draft pick. And pretty sure they are rebuilding. This would give them two shots at that top pick and two top 10 picks in the deepest draft in a decade with rose and butler as building blocks.

Not sure if it has been mentioned yet as I haven't seen it anywhere on the forum, and certainly not in this thread, but Voison this morning wrote that the Kings seriously considered Miller and have now dropped the idea.
Sneaky...:D That was some post padding...

I'm not sure Miller showed he's a "good" vet, so along with his inability to guard anybody capable of moving he just was a bad fit.

I don't know that the players are dumb so much as that athleticism >>>>>>> intelligence with the rule changes over the last twenty or so years. The game is far less physical and much, much faster than it used to be. You don't have to understand a proper princeton offense or how to beat it defensively when a simple high pick and roll will let your speedster guard get into the lane because his man can't hand check him anymore to deny. So we counter with smaller, faster big men, and then the guards jump higher to get over the faster (and smaller) big men, and then everybody blows out their knees and no one can figure out why.

This note sure got depressing. ;)

Have you seen any Duke games?? He's such a lazy defender, but to give him the benefit of the doubt, it has more to do with his lateral quickness. He has a pretty horrible defensive awareness. He isn't quick enough to guard 3s, and probably isn't strong enough to guard 4s in the NBA. He's gifted offensively, no doubt, but to say he doesn't play defense is pretty accurate. If Malone can't preach defense to our team, what makes us think he'll be able to preach it to an 18yearold?

His lateral quickness is nothing to brag about. My knock on him, is that he's really slow, to the point where it looks like he isn't trying. What position do you think he'll be able to guard in the NBA? It's just like how many people said Ben has a great defensive potential before the draft.. I don't see that potential anywhere now. He's arguably one of our worst defenders.

I would presume he would guard SFs. He's 18 yrs old, 6'8" and 235 pounds. He'll probably grow an inch and with luck even more if he is anything near normal in his growth.

Definitely SF. He will need to add about 20lbs but he's a SF through and through and that's the position he'll guard..

I've seen more Duke games than any other college team this year, and I watch a lot of college basketball. No point arguing this as we're not going to agree - suffice to say that I strongly disagree with pretty much everything in your post and I'm not sure you really know what you're watching.

This says it all for me:

My knock on him, is that he's really slow...

Really, I don't think you know what you're watching. Appearances can be deceptive - I've seen Parker eat up the ground on multiple sprinting PGs. Pretty much no one his size can come close to keeping up with him in the open floor. He doesn't look like an athlete which seems to be the basis of your opinion. Parker is quick, no doubt about it, and a much better athlete than you're giving him credit for.

Who, Parker? He most certainly does not need to add any weight. If anything he could do with trimming down, although he doesn't necessarily need to. He's plenty big enough to be a SF in the NBA already, in fact he'll have a size/strength advantage on a lot of them as it is.

I think on the offensive side, he'll definitely be a SF, but on the defensive side, he'll struggle guarding both the 3 and 4 position.

When I said slow, I meant on defense. No doubt, the best offensive player in this upcoming draft. He's a good athlete, I never discredited him for that. I just believe he's not a good defender. I'm not sure if he'll be able to guard SFs in the NBA. He reminds me a lot of Melo, except not as athletic. He's going to give you 20 points, but give up 20 at the same time. I think he needs to add a little more muscle, but his size is about right for a SF.

I think Carmelo is a good comparison. People will hear that and take it as a negative, but they're two different people, Jabari has a higher basketball IQ and isn't going to bring the attitude problems that Melo sometimes does. I think Carmelo was probably slightly quicker in college than Jabari is (though Carmelo is a lot heavier, and slower, now than he was at Syracuse). I think besides that, Parker is a better athlete overall. I think Parker is very strong already, he just doesn't look it as his body is a bit soft. I think losing 10-15lbs might actually help Jabari a lot, though then again it may not.

Parker has been scouted several times by Chris Mullin who knows something about the position he will play. Yesterday I think was some info that probably came from Chris saying that Parker was a remarkable player and a remarkable character guy. I don't know why the focus on his lateral movement. Yes, he is not perfect and from what I've seen, I'm not sure that we know how he will be as a defender. He is not a Wiggins in his lateral movement but then Wiggins can't stand up against the powerful SFs. I'd still pick him #1 and walk away with a big smile. His body does appear soft but if/when he hits the weight room, his body will change.

His body is only soft because his body fat percentage is unusually high for an elite athlete, especially one as athletic as he is. If he brought that down you would be able to see that he's quite strong. A body fat issue, not a strength one. Even so, it doesn't seem to affect him negatively at all.
