I know that a lot of people are immediately dismissive about Randolph because of his contract and his attitude. Yes, his contract is high and yes he has been a jerk in the past. However I am also certain that this kid can play. His talent level should make him a primary piece on a very good team. New York is also at the point of trading him for very little in return as long as it clears space for the 2010 LbJ sweepstakes.
New York Trades:
Zach Randolph
Sacramento Trades:
Kenny Thomas
SAR
Quincy Douby
Why New York does it:
Cap space cap space cap space. New York has already conceded that they are on the 2 year plan. I can't seem to find any other team that has 2 bloated enough contracts to fit this plan other than us of course. Douby's contract also provide cap relief or gives the Knicks a player to evaluate for the future.
Why the Kings do it:
Another risk on a risky talented player. While he's not a piece for a longterm rebuild plan Zach is still young enough that he should be in his prime at least for another 3-4 years and still very relevant for the 5-6 years. His contract sucks, but at least he plays. We are now currently going to pay $28 million in the next two years for two players that may not even play a minute. I would much rather pay $45 million over three years for someone that is at least a legitimate starter and potential star. We've had other players that have cleaned up their act after moving to Sacramento (see Webber and Artest) and who knows how much he has matured since his troubled years in Portland.
