Zach Randolph Revisited

I know that a lot of people are immediately dismissive about Randolph because of his contract and his attitude. Yes, his contract is high and yes he has been a jerk in the past. However I am also certain that this kid can play. His talent level should make him a primary piece on a very good team. New York is also at the point of trading him for very little in return as long as it clears space for the 2010 LbJ sweepstakes.

New York Trades:
Zach Randolph

Sacramento Trades:
Kenny Thomas
SAR
Quincy Douby

Why New York does it:
Cap space cap space cap space. New York has already conceded that they are on the 2 year plan. I can't seem to find any other team that has 2 bloated enough contracts to fit this plan other than us of course. Douby's contract also provide cap relief or gives the Knicks a player to evaluate for the future.

Why the Kings do it:
Another risk on a risky talented player. While he's not a piece for a longterm rebuild plan Zach is still young enough that he should be in his prime at least for another 3-4 years and still very relevant for the 5-6 years. His contract sucks, but at least he plays. We are now currently going to pay $28 million in the next two years for two players that may not even play a minute. I would much rather pay $45 million over three years for someone that is at least a legitimate starter and potential star. We've had other players that have cleaned up their act after moving to Sacramento (see Webber and Artest) and who knows how much he has matured since his troubled years in Portland.

Zack Randoff is just 26 yr's old. However he will turn 27 in the middle of this month. Point is, he's not that old. Problem is, he would be a huge risk and would screw up all our plans for the post 2009/2010 season. There's no denying his talent. Just not sure I would want to gamble our future on him, and thats what we would be doing.

There is a good readon why Portland gave him to NY for next to noting, and thyey where estactic about that.

This shouldn't be revisited.

I think Zach Randolph's negative impact on the court and all that "cancer" stuff is way overblown. He's a 20/10 guy and he plays hard. Might be a little selfish in not passing out of dobule-teams and the like and off the court might be a knucklehead, but 20/10 is 20/10.

The problem is that despite his strengths on the court he also has some significant weaknesses, namely that he's 6'9", not really a leaper and especially not a leaper since he had microfracture surgery, and so he's pretty worthless on defense and as a shotblocker. These are physical limitations irrespective of whatever his attitude on defense may be (and for the record, that attitude is "indifferent").

Pair Randolph with the right center to compensate for his weaknesses and I think he could probably be a pretty valuable PF. Pair him with Eddie Curry, who has all of the same weaknesses as Randolph and who cares less about defense than Randolph, and they lose tons of games. You need a center who can compensate defensively with shotblocking and hustle to cover Randolph's weaknesses.

And Spencer Hawes is precisely not the center you'd want to pair with Randolph. Offensively they would be pretty tough since they can both play inside and out and could probably score quite a few points. Defensively they would get murdered, and I've had quite enough of that for the last 7 years.

The question shouldn't be whether he can "play", it should be whether he can "win." And the answer is definitely "no."

Randolph is the type of guys who will put up nice stats and not help your team win a single game. There are always guys like that, from Orlando Woolridge to Starbury.

This should be required posting in any thread about Zach Randolph:

I'm convinced that Zeebo either means "moron" or "jackass" in some language.

You were doing really well right through this point^^. No need to go any further.

There have to be other ways to get rid of problems (KT, SAR) than to simply swap them for another problem.

We need to quit even thinking about bringing anyone in who has the potential to disrupt what could be a very good young group this season.

I don't see how that video is really relevant to his ability. You realize who was calling the shots from the bench on that team right? Isiah Thomas could make any basketball player look like an idiot. The Kings on the other hand have a long standing system of big men with inside out games and I really think that Randolph could thrive in such a system. And I think we need to admit that the Kings are not going to outplay many teams on the defensive end. Even at our contender status days everyone understood that the Kings defense was adequate at best. And despite his 6'9 height, Randolphs arm length and wide size make him more than strong enough to pull down rebounds.

And lets not forget that we would be trading trash, unplayable players for a potential all-star. Randolph might even be worth it just because he might bring in a few more season ticket holders and actually bring some buzz to the Kings. It would also be the first real challenge to Theus's coaching career. And even if things don't pan out, then our rebuilding is set back one season. There's no way we can be strong with KT and SARs sucking up contract space without playing and Randolphs contract ends in 2011.

All in all, i'm really starting to think this is less of a risk than people think.

You think Isiah Thomas called that play?

Randolph went into business for himself. Any criticism of Thomas is valid, as far as I'm concerned, but that play didn't have anything to do with Thomas; that was a hundred percent about Randolph being a jackass.

I think what it reveals is that Thomas had no control over his players. Real coaches would have benched or otherwise reprimanded their player for doing something like that. Maybe Randolph was being a jerk, but good coaches control their players emotions and force them to contribute to the team. Thomas had no such skills.

Directing talent is the sign of a good coach and Randolph is full of talent. ANd remind me what we are losing in this trade?

there is NO way a coach would let a powerforward do between the legs and shoot threes like that unless they are chris webber or dirk nowitzki

isiah just smirked cause he KNOWS he is going to get canned by the end of the season any ways might as well let randolph be a jackass

Or he smirked because he knew an explosion/tirade was just what Randolph was looking for. We don't know what Thomas was thinking (do we ever?), but it's pretty clear that Randolph doesn't mind the negative attention that such an act would bring.

If we bring in seasoned vets, it should be in a mentoring role. I wouldn't want Zach Randolph near my pet rocks.

Have you forgotten that the Knicks weren't Randolph's first rodeo???

If the Artest experiment doesn't teach us anything else, it should teach us that not every player can become productive in Sacramento and a contributing asset to the Kings even if he has a LOT of talent.

What would we be losing? It's more like "What would we be risking?" And the answer to that is simple - We'd be risking another downturn of team chemistry, possibly the development of some of our promising young talent, and a further erosion of the fan base for someone like Zach Randolph.

Sorry but he's not worth the risk - AND that's even assuming such a deal would go through, which I have serious doubts about.

Yeah i'd say we are in a semi rebuild no need to take a U-turn now. I am not even sure I would take Tim Duncan right now as you would only have a 2 or 3 year loner. Now find a way to get D. Howard maybe Okafor or Bosh then we are in business.

Yikes... Randolph isn't the answer for a long term build... You said it yourself, so why the heck do you want him and his contract here if it's not going to help us anyway? The only thing that he would do is take time from the youngsters.. At least KT, and SAR are dead weight, and are not hurting the development. Randolph would. Plus he's a cancer, and a jackass who nobody in their right mind would want on their team.. Even the Knicks fans hate him.

"Stupid is as stupid does" comes to mind in discussing Zach coming to the Kings under any circumstance. I'd rather milk a bit of PF out of SAR and suck KT's salary than disrupt......no, potentially destroy a young team with some talent that will be on the playoff bubble this year but maybe, just maybe in the new top 4-5 in the west.

Bringing in Zach may get some immediate return but potentially destroys the "retooling" going on within the Kings now. Bad tradeoff.

What could we give Portland for Lamarcus Aldridge?
Lets not say he's untouchable.

It would probably involve every player of worth on our team and maybe we would take a ****ty contract off their hands and give them 2 first rounders.
