So was Rudy Gay...he is also a deluded and seemingly incorrigible chucker nearly guaranteed to step on toes and remain eternally clueless as to why his terrible offense isn't appreciated.
If he was an ending contract or some such...you'd be risking this year, but then it could be over, and you could part ways. But with those extra years at massive money, and this being a guy who really should have been playing SF at his size now approaching the years when athleticism fades...Gerald Wallace becomes a cautionary tale.
JT is playing on the upper cusp of his ability, he will fall back to earth soon.
He will start getting back to bad habits. Like slapping at the ball and playing D with his hands. He does this now just isn't getting called like normal.Huh?
JT this year is shooting .125 points lower from the field than his career average, free throws .150 points below his career average, his points per game are well under half of his career average, and he's getting one fewer rebound, all in essentially the same minutes. Statistically he is doing the worst he has ever done. The only thing he's doing well is playing defense, and it's not like he's going to "start missing" on that.
So was Rudy Gay...
The guy is only barely 29. His athleticism will hold up 3 years.Rudy didn't have 3 years on his deal nor was his athleticism in major decline while not having an ideal position.

Augustin makes the deal for me. He is a top notch 6th man PG who can spot start if needed.

One thing I'm curious about is for those that make the move. Who do you send out? JT or Landry?
I'd talk to Detroit about other players on their roster; not Smith. Has anybody seen enough Detroit games to analyze why they are doing so poorly? The fact that they put together this dysfunctional group could mean they just don't know what the heck they are doing, which could be a very good thing for a trading partner.
I know there are some JT homers, but come on Smith is clearly more talented. Even w half his original athleticism he is the better player. The Kings will not get a better player in FA. Sorry but Sac is still not a premier FA market. If you can get talent for a career backup you do it.
I ask this in all seriousness, have you watched either guy play over the last two years?
I ask this in all seriousness, have you? Josh Smith is EASILY more talented than JT has ever been. Yeah, he's had a few rough years, but JT has been mediocre his entire career and is just now turning into a decent defensive player (still not great). Josh Smith is a better scorer, better rebounder, better passer, and even a better shot blocker than JT. The only thing JT has on Smith is length.
Then why is his PER below average and why is he shooting 36% from 2. JT is a better fit with the staters and you don't trade him for smith period. They take landry/DWill/ray or we move on
I'm not necessarily saying we need to trade JT for Smith, or that Smith would be a better fit than JT. I'm just saying Josh is EASILY the better basketball player, and I think most people would agree with that (maybe not).
JT's shooting the same pct as Josh Smith btw, and that's mostly from right under the basket.
You have to give to get. I'm sure they can find JT type talent for Smith. Yes smiths trade value is low, but not that low.Oh alright I thought you were comparing the two as in we should trade JT but ya agree he is more talented but don't trade JT.

Thompson not being as talented as Smith is irrelevant to whether or not I would trade for him. There are dozens of guys in the NBA that are more 'talented' than Jason Thompson that I would not trade for Jason Thompson, because they are not a better fit for this team. You know how everybody likes to bag on Jason Thompson's 'low bball iq'? Well, Josh Smith also has low basketball IQ, and he's lazy as ****, and he wants to take a ****-ton of shots. And he doesn't want to play defense. Aside from the occasional highlight block, he doesn't really play any defense. He's also several years removed from being effectively able to play power forward, which is what we would need out of him.I ask this in all seriousness, have you? Lopez for sure but I would not trade Thompson for McGee (durability and mental issues), I guess I should have said for a legit starter who fits well next to Cousins.I don't know if I'd go that far; I think, for example, that you'd have to listen to a Thompson for McGee trade. If you can sucker Portland into a Thompson for Lopez trade, you definitely pull the trigger on that. But I wouldn't trade Thompson for, say, Amar'e Stoudemire, who is a (former) All-Star, and a much more 'talented' player than Thompson, but would be a horrible fit for this team.
