Xavier Henry?

If he's a true SG AND not a SF, AND his skillset is a good match for our team, AND he's got the personality of a role player; go for it. Just make sure you don't offer more than a future top 10 pick for him.

I haven't seen him play, but I'd rather have the 12th pick this year over next year. At some point I'd like to stop aquiring ingredients and let the recipe bake for a while. A young role playing SG is pretty much the only ingredient we're missing.

My only concern would be overpaying for a luxury, not a need. Garcia and Beno can cover SG just fine.

I like Henry and saw him play quite a bit. If your just going to look at the stat sheet and make a judgement, then your going to see just an average player. But if you watched him play and realize that he played on a stacked team, a team he was probably the third or fouth option on, you'll draw a different conclusion. To say what he is or isn't, based on one year of college ball is ridiculous. He's a good, but not a great athlete. He has decent handles and despite his lack of assists isn't a bad passer. When left open he's a deadly three pt shooter. His midrange shot needs some work and he needs to learn how to come off screens better. He's a good finisher around the basket, but no one will confuse him with Tyreke at getting to the basket.

The point is that he's a good young player thats going to get better. He has a good work ethic, and would be a nice player at the shooting guard position to grow with the team. Would I give up any of our young core players for him? No! A future first? Yes! I'd like to have him, but the Kings aren't desperate.

It would not surprise me at all if Petrie has been calling Memphis about this assuming he likes Henry. Petrie has several times in the past taken advantage of broken situations between players and ownership in an attempt to get a value. Webber, Artest, SAR, etc are good examples.


In addition, it shouldn't be too difficult to wiggle our way back into the first round at the trade deadline even if we give up our first rounder for Henry. Lakers, Rockets, Jazz, Mavs all are over the tax line and have some useless, expiring dead weight that we should be able to help them out with in exchange for a late 1st.

That doesn't sound like a very good organizaion/player relationships they've got going. Just not good at all. Is Memphis in such financial straights that they are trying to nickel and dime their first rounder. Is so, the org is not in a very good situation overall. I bet he's traded soon.

1. Save money
2. Get a real starting PG
3. Move Thabeet's contract
4. Get that backup PF they lack.

Sacramento does this to:
1. Get the starting SG they want
2. Get a decent bench PG and a project backup C.
3. Musselman needs a better squad in Reno...

True. What about this... Memphis does need frontcourt depth...

So,

Landry for X + misc filler (Maybe Same Young or their other rookie, Gervais Vasquez, who also has not signed).

Kings get a SG, Memphis gets one of the best off the bench PFs in the league to deepen their frontcourt.

I think the point is that we don't want to pay Landry next year. Anyways, I would rather keep him and try to make the playoffs. Its not that I don't want Xavier, but its just along the lines of "I want to make the playoffs" trading Landry doesn't help that(at least not this year). Also before you say "how are we going to make it with so many good teams", all I can say is Denver.

I'm not sure if Memphis is being stubborn largely because they regret drafting Xavier Henry. Sure, those incentives look like they are attainable for the average rookie drafted this high, but for Henry...I doubt it. Memphis in particular has two early twenty-something minute sponges at the swings in OJ Mayo (38 mpg) and Rudy Gay (39.7 mpg), although with the lack of reliable backup for Conley I can see Mayo moving to PG (that's why they tested him there at summer league). Tony Allen might get some of the remaining minutes at SG (and he's IMO one of the best backups in the league), and Memphis has an affinity for Sam Young, so...Xavier's best bet is fighting DeMarre Carroll for minutes at SF and sopping the remainder at SG. Xavier's best bet is really getting minutes at the SF if he can be the primary backup behind Gay, but even then he's probably barely at 15 mpg unless any injuries happen to Tony Allen (likely) and OJ Mayo. And he needs to be used properly..he's a system player who will only thrive if he's encouraged to shoot, and if he's getting in the passing lanes. Those two primary things, largely. That's not really all-rookie material, much less rookie/sophomore game material, unless he develops some more dimensions to his game, so the best bet for him would be to pass the 15 mpg 70+ game barrier, which too is questionable.

So that leaves us with the trade. I think Memphis put in those incentives because it is questionable whether Xavier can reach any of them, and their refusal to pay Xavier in full might be due to the misgivings they have in drafting him. But I get the feeling that Memphis will want a lot in return, touting that Xavier was the #12th overall, and they might want a good PG in return for example. We certainly may have a need at SG if we're to play Reke at PG more, and with Garcia's injuries being a concern. Henry's not a SG in the truest sense as he's not a conventional slasher or passer for the position, but with his height and shooting he can fit in decently enough. It's hard to work out a trade involving players without it being too complicated, but if we like Henry that much, a future 1st would suffice--that pick would probably be in the mid lotto to late lotto for them, depending on how our season works out. I personally wouldn't do any trade for Henry, but if Geoff likes him...

I would only agree to that move personally at the trade deadline when we know we are not making the playoffs. I do not want to lose anymore, I want to be in the playoffs, I want to see the kings win, and this year trading Landry means that we are going to lose for another year.

We all know players take time to grow into their potential if they ever reach it at all. We also know we have alot of players growing right now. It might be worth salvaging some future draft picks to get as much potential as we can scrape together now so that it can grow with our core. However We want to be really careful about giving up pieces we already have and messing with budding chemistry. Its all in the strat the front office wants to take.

Just like pulling the trigger on rebuild time you are going to eventually have to pull the trigger on talent acquisitions to change from a good team to a contender. Unfortunately if you wait till its obvious its too late to be super effective. That is unless you are a big market and are given superstars for peanuts.

Also, in checking the stats of Summer League on NBA.com, Henry didn't play although Vasquez did. Does anyone recall why Henry didn't play? Memphis also drafted Dominque Jones in the first round. Strange when you think about it, because all three players play the same position. Although Henry can also play some SF. So I'm not sure whats going on with them. I like Vasquez quite a bit and thought he would be a second round pick. Jones skill level is very similar to Vasquez. I would be surprised to see all three on the roster at the beginning of the season.

Ahhhh, thats why I need you around.. I missed that one. However, I still don't know whats going on in Memphis. Kind of strange for a first round pick not to be signed yet. Its not as though were talking about a lot of money. At least by NBA standards. For the Kings needs, I'd actually lean more to Vasquez over Henry. Henry has more upside than Vasquez, but Vasquez can play the Pt or the SG position. Good ballhandler and passer and has turned himself into a pretty good outside shooter. Henry is the better athlete. Hell, I'll take either one as long as its cheap.

I was also on board with Vasquez as our 2nd rounder (not knowing, of course, that he would go in the 1st and that Whiteside would fall). His skillset (and hieght) would seem to work very well with Tyreke. Worry he might just be too unathletic and slow, though, to cut it defensively in the big league. He might be even more of a defensive liability than Beno.

That article is almost a month old. Last I saw, I don't believe the Griz were willing to trade him and it's been quiet ever since.
