WOW! Really good Q&A with Petrie

The Q&A with Petrie in the Bee this morning was, from a fans perspective, really good but not great. Very long and informative. GP was the GP we also know and love. But no significant new news came out since nothing can really happen with players until July 1.

But it was a really good insight to Coach Theus, and the players and their situations. Kind of eliminated any conspiracy theories we may have had and in typical GP fashion, stayed away from specifics. To his credit there are no real specifics anyway at this time due to the July 1 limitation on talking to players. But I enjoyed it and feel it is a good wrap-up to the season.

One item I think came out is the summer league team could be a powerhouse. Shelden should be there and so could SAR (if he legally can be) plus Hawes, Douby likely and some really interesting draft choices from the two second rounders the Kings have.

Read the whole think via the "Kings News Link" threads.

Gotta disagree with you. I thought the Q&A wasn't very good. Basically just asked the same easy questions that every other interview with him asks. He gave hardly any clear answers, also as usual, and of course the interviewer never asked any tough questions and never pushed the issue on anything. I'm getting sick of all the journalists who cover the Kings never asking any real tough questions and never ever pushing the issue on anything when they get a terrible answer. How come I've yet to read an interview with Petrie where someone calls him out on the SAR, Moore, or Salmons signings? I also don't think I've ever read anyone really grilling him about KT or about how he complains about rebounding yet cut arguably our best rebounder in Justin. There also wasn't any real draft talk in the interview.

I really wish the Bee could get someone that really knows how to ask the tough questions and get answers in their interviews with the Kings.

also if you want to ever get any info from someone you don't ask them things that put them in a bad situation or else that may be the last interview you get. Ask Alabama media how they get treated by Nick Saban.

I'll agree with the posts above - it's Petrie's job to answer questions in this fashion. The real dirt comes from the rumors that leak out - and equally, we have to take those with a grain of salt.

However, I would have asked him:

- What kind of team are you trying to build?

Sure, we may have an idea...good shooters/passing/athletic. But sometimes, I wonder...

- Compared to other GM's, what unique qualities do you look for in personnel?

He may beat around the bush on this one (for competitive/poker reasons), but I'd like him to clarify this one as well.

In summary, we've all garnered and speculated as to what kind of team Petrie wants to build: based on past information, hints, et al. But IMO his vision is not very clear at the moment, other than to build a "competitive" team for these interim years of pain & suffering. So mainly my question is: Geoff, what exactly are you trying to build?

Nothing new or particularly interesting.

Has GP ever said anything really interesting or earth shattering new in one of his infrequent media interviews? He seems like the ultimate low-key monotone voice of the Kings brass. Not that that's bad. Just his particular style, at least in public. Certainly the Maloofs can be a bit more brash from time-to-time and obviously Coach Theus is a media master - both for better or worse.

I thought it was solid -- the length alone made it pretty comprehensive (if you read the full thing). And there were no pointing at the moon quotes -- you could read between the lines to ferret out some solid, if not exactly earthshattering views.

Petriespeak

The most interesting comment Petrie made was about Hawes. Why? Because the writer didn't even ask him about Hawes. Yet Mr. Loquacious brought the subject of Hawes up on his own. Why? Because that's who Petrie is most excited about. He realizes that Hawes could be the cornerstone of the franchise for the next decade. Hence, he's very focused on Hawes's progress over the next couple of years. When he talked about Beno, on the other hand, it was in terms of "spirit", not talent. Read from that that he doesn't think Beno is going to be a cornerstone piece, but he is an asset.

I agree that the questions could have been a heckuva lot better.

The closest to that answer may be here:
Q: You obviously have Kevin (Martin) as a big piece for the future, but how do you envision the pieces you eventually want to put around Kevin?

A: Our team right now, really, when you look at the ages of some of our most productive players, they're all well below 30. Beno will be a free agent, and Ron has the capacity to be one. But Kevin is young, Frisco (García) is young, John (Salmons) is still young, Spencer (Hawes) obviously is young, Quincy (Douby) hasn't been as productive as those guys yet but he's young and we're going to have another decent draft pick this year. We have some flexibility. And depending on how things work out, I think you can see the potential for the ongoing development and a group there that can be productive.

He talked about Kenny and Shareef, that he wants to see how the "core" group of guys develop, the salary cap for both '09 and '10.

Just because you ask a tough question doesn't mean that you're going to get answer that satisfies the fans. 3 pages of Petrie answering questions is good considering how often he says much of anything.

I think Amick did an incredible job. Geoff Petrie is NOT an easy interview. Sam may have wanted to ask tougher questions, but it would have been pretty meaningless if Petrie just pointed at the moon or talked about cackling hens. Amick actually got some comments of substance, just as Elise10 pointed out.

I've cricitized Amick on occasion, so I think it's only fair to give him props for an article that was well worth reading from beginning to end.

Thanks, Sam!
