I didn't see the game, just have seen some criticism re: their clock management. But I'm going to say hmmm...

Will be interesting to see if they do flame out...um, so to speak lol

Didn't you see the way Pondexter reacted when Taylor hit that shot at the buzzer? It was clear that she either thought that they tied the game, or they won the game; that's on Corey F. Gaines.

Maybe they would have lost, anyway, but Gaines cost them that game. And, if they end up getting put out of the playoffs, he needs to be gone.
That was strange. How can professional athletes who play basketball year around not know what the score is. I agree the coach is responsible here. Bad clock management, bad game management. And yes Phoenix would have lost the game anyway, but that does not matter. INEXCUSABLE:eek:

Congrats to Bonner. She is a player I was definitely interested in at the #7 pick (until Courtney dropped down to us).

Man, I hope Indiana can come back from that; I so totally do not want to see Detroit in the Finals again.
I am Hip; but this looks like the same old story. Indiana gets to playoffs, faces Detroit and can not put the ball in the ocean. And the bad part about it is this Detroit team is nowhere near the previous three in terms of talent, especially without Katie Smith and a hobbled Ford and Nolan.

If Indy can not put this away with two games at home, there may be some huge issues in regards to the future of the Fever on the court, let alone off the court.

Former Monarchs Erin Perperoglou (Buescher) retires

Here is part of the Silver Stars' press release:
"...Each player eventually gets to the place when they know it's time for them to leave the court and move on with life, and I believe my time is now. I am thrilled about this next chapter of my life, moving to Europe with my new husband, and starting a great adventure. To my dear teammates, I love you guys and hope the best for you on and off the court, may God bless and keep you."
Her numbers were way down this year ever since she got married during the previous offseason. At the time, I got the feeling that her head was no longer in the game and her b-ball career was beginning to be winding down.

Erin, thanks for all that you've done for the WNBA, and especially for the Monarchs when you here (2005-06) I know that I miss you already!

Good luck to you in your future endeavors, and enjoy those surfer waves! :)

As I wait for the second half of the Shock/Fever game to get underway, I have decided to share a couple of idle bits of trivia that I thought about on my way home from work today. Most of this stuff is utterly insignificant, and some of it may be irrelevant in an hour, so I will go ahead and and post it now...

Did you know:

  • Sheryl Swoopes is the only reigning Defensive Player of the Year ever to win a championship.
  • Nicole Powell is the only reigning Most Improved Player ever to win a championship.
  • Cheryl Ford is the only reigning Rookie of the Year ever to win a championship, or even play in the WNBA Finals.
  • Ruth Riley is the only WNBA Finals MVP to have never made an All-WNBA Team in her career.
  • Tamika Catchings is, to date, the only member of the All-Decade team to never appear in the WNBA Finals.
  • The 2007 Phoenix Mercury is the only team in WNBA history to win a championship without a single player on the All-Defensive team*
  • They are also, to date, the only team in league history which has won a championship that did not win a championship in their first trip to the WNBA Finals.
  • They are also the only team to ever win the WNBA Finals on the road.
  • The Detroit Shock were the first expansion team to win a WNBA Championship.
  • They are also the only Eastern Conference team to win a WNBA Championship.
  • The 2001 Cleveland Rockers are the only fourth seed to play in a WNBA Finals.
  • On a slightly related note, the Los Angeles Sparks are the only team ever to win five consecutive WNBA Finals games.
  • 2006 featured, to date, the only WNBA Finals in league history where neither participating team was playing for their first championship.

Eh, pardon my lack of outrage; she was the best player on the best team, during the regular season. Hard to argue with that logic.

I should have been more clear. I won't argue with the logic either. But the one word response when anyone mentions Diana Taurasi will always be "Blech." I just don't like her.......AT ALL!

Atlanta's Marynell Meadors was named Coach Of The Year.

It's hard for me to argue this choice. In 2008, she led the Atlanta Dream to a 14-win improvement over their first inaugural season in 2007.

Indiana's Lin Dunn came in at a distant second place.

Not that Julie Plank (Washington Mystics) deserved to win, but I'm a bit suprised that she didn't even get one vote.

The owner of the Russian women's b-ball team, Spartak Moscow, was shot to death in what appears to be a contract killing. Fortunately, none of the players were around during the time of the shooting. His name was Shabtai von Kalmanovich. He has previously been a concert promoter and was a former KGB spy!

WNBA players on the Spartark team include Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Janell Burse, Lauren Jackson, Kelly Miller, and Sylvia Fowles.

The guy was mentioned in an ESPN article last year called "Rolling In Rubles".

And here's an article from Sports Illustrated in Dec. 2008:
