No offense, but its sort of a premature, and silly poll right at this moment. We have no idea who were drafting, or what trades will be made, or who we might sign in freeagency. I would venture to say that knowing all those things might give one a better idea how to respond to this poll. So I shall wait until such time!

Tell me what our roster looks like and I will tell you if we make the play offs.

With the current roster/coach combinations?! Not in a million years!

Only thing for sure about next season at this point on May 1, 2012 is that Kings will continue playing in Sacramento (for time being) at old PBA. This thread is closed - or deserves to be.

Ask me again after the draft.

If you just assume we get the 6th pick i would have to say definitely not.

exactly. It all depends on the offseason

With a new coach and ownership committed to winning, then yes.

Those of you wanting to wait until after the offseason to answer the question are kind of missing the point, at least as I see it. This seems to be a question about the general direction of the club. Do you think the players that lead the team are talented enough to take the Kings to the playoffs? Do you trust the front office to put the additional pieces in to help that happen? Do you trust the owners to pay for the players necessary if given the opportunity?

I think it's possible. A couple of supporting players and a different system from the coach would be enough to let this team compete for the 8th seed or so. I think it's more likely that they miss, though.

We have had enough talent to make the playoffs the last 2 years. We have lacked the leadership and vision to get us there (implemented systems, making defense a part of the game, putting players in a position to help the team succeed, ect) and I see no reason to believe changes we make this off season will get us closer aside from more misused talent. I foresee another running team next year no matter the 1/2 court talent and it will be an excuse to let defense and a real offensive system slide because we will still be putting up enough points....

We had enough quantity of talent, but not necessarily the talent to get the playoffs. We had 6 legitimate nba rotation players, and 5 normally rotation quality but borderline because they underachieved (Cisco/Chuck/Salmons/Hickson/Outlaw).
The top 3 stacks up with playoff teams, but the next 3 (JT/IT/TW) are probably 6th men, and the last 5 are backend 9th/10th guys on good teams.
The team needs 2 more stud role players to knock one of JT/IT to the bench and one of Salmons/Outlaw/Garcia off the top 12.

We have the talent to make the playoffs, especially after the draft with another lottery pick.

What we don't have is the coach to implement a system and the chemistry that's needed by the players.

So if we bring back Smart and he refuses to install a real offense but continues with his 'easy buckets' offense then we will not make the playoffs.
If we end up having a coach who attempts to install a real offense, while playing a line-up which can compete on the defensive-end, then there is a small chance for the play-offs this year, and a much better chance the year after once we develop some chemistry.

But the talent does you no good if it isn't being used properly.

As frustrating as it is to say...I had higher hopes of this team making the playoffs at this time last year, than I do this year, due to what took place over the offseason and the regular season with this team.

I think you guys taking the playoff for next season poll too seriously. ;)

Ha! But this is a discussion forum and not everyone has similar interests. That's the problem with allowing humans on the forum. We all think differently. Get any two people willing to discuss any subjet and away it goes.

I thought we had a good chance of making it last offseason. With Tyreke, Cousins, Hickson and Thompson scoring in the post/getting all the rebounds and Thornton + Jimmer raining down 3s ... Boy was I wrong! :p

I think making the playoffs next season will have as much to do with us and it does the other teams. If right around 500 gets you in, I think we have a shot!

How dare you call me human! My wife has many other names......:D

Whereas you mentioned Thompson, you have to wonder whats going on in his mind. At the end of the 2010/2011 season, he was the default PF on the team. We lose Dalembert, but then we sign Hayes with the idea of playing him next to Cuz. Then we work a deal to aquire Hickson. If I'm Thompson, I'm thinking to myself that obviously, I'm the odd man out. Then Hickson turns out to be a failure, the Hayes/Cousins combo doesn't work effectively, and the odd man out, is suddenly the heir apparent to the PF position once again.

If I'm Thompson, I have to be wondering just how much they want me. How much time passes before there's another new coach, and once again he has a different idea of where I fall in the pecking order. Right now, if I'm JT, I'm looking for some love and appreciation that lasts. To say that the Kings organization is a fickle organization is an understatement. No on seems capable of making a decision that lasts more than a few weeks. Tryeke is a PG, no! He's a SF! No, wait a minute, he's a SG. Thompson is a starting PF. No! He's a backup center off the bench. No wait, he's a backup PF off the bench. Damm, you know what, he's really a starting PF. Excuse me, my bad, he's really a third string PF/C off the bench. Opp's, sorry, JT. My bad again, your really loved here, and your our starting PF. Just sign on the dotted line right here and everyone's happy. Heh Heh, at least for now!

I won't even attempt to get into Donte Greene..

I hear ya bajaden. You would think after three years for Tyreke and four for JT/DG the Kings would have a better idea of where their players should be. Give the kids some consistency for crying out loud! It's what really makes predicting a playoff appearance or any kind record impossible to do. Who will stay? Who will go? What position will they play...

Ai, sir, this is the problem. No decision lasts longer than a few weeks. And I'm the guy who berated Adelman for his pig headed unwillingness to change. But to the point of JT, I have no worries about JT's mind set which of course is just one of those opinions us humans come up with. I just don't see much drama going on within his brain. In fact his best basketball has been at the end of this season. People will say it's because he is playing for a contract which is possible but I think he is just improving. I admire him. It is amazing he gets no praise but of course he is overshadowed by Cousins. It's even possible he couldn't play so well if attention was not on Cuz. Just the same JT can be a starter or come off the bench but he needs minutes as a valued member of this team.

As to Donte, I am not privy to the practices, etc. but I think he has earned the uncertainty.

As to the OP, I said NO and I took into account the draft and other changes that might occur. We will improve as anything else would happen only with a major injury. I think Smart will hold us back and if the Maloofs stay in money conserving mode, we won't improve to our potential. We deserve better or anyway I deserve better. :)

Unfortunately keeping a bad coach for consistency's sake isn't a win overall that's what we did with WP to great effect. So much wasted time and talent....

I would have told you we should have been in the running this year. If we mismanage another offseason as badly, then no. And that will be 100% on the front office, because even after filling the roster with junk this past offseason and hiring our 97th straight amateur coach, even a blind monkey should be able to come onto a team with DeMarcus Cousins, with Tyreke Evans, with Marcus Thornton, with Isaiah Thomas, with a Top 5 pick most likely, and mount a playoff run with it.

If I were a young player I would dread going to the Kings. None of our young talent has improved in the last 5 years. JT has improved in spite of this team, improving in the effort and emotional parts of the game but he's never taken advantage of his shooting and handling ability to take advantage of his new post game. He's been moved out of the rotation or out of position (to SF) in favor of guys like Darnell Jackson.

Even the guys who've broken out here have not improved, MT's essentially the player he was in his rookie year, just with more PT and responsibility. And as great as Cousins has been, I have a hard time saying his improvement from day 1 surpasses what I had hoped for, he's doing what he is supposed to, just a little less efficiently.

I'd love to know what other players talk about when the Kings are brought up. I know Barkley treats us like crap and I wonder if that is the general atitude. The fact we get no FAs will always hold us back and maybe there is a solution somewhere.

I am not so gloomy as to think that no one improves but when players' agents come to ask about what's going on with their players (Daly and Tyreke), something isn't working right.

an emphatic NO!! i'll take it a step farther...not only do i think we wont make the playoffs next season, but i honestly believe we wont make the playoffs as long as the maloofs are our owners. we have owners who can't afford to own and run the team properly, and invest in talent and coaching to make us competitive. we cant attract free agents because our arena is a dump and cant sign an actual coach because the maloofs are broke. so as long as the maloofs are the owners who are content at having the lowest payroll in the league and cant afford to make our team better, we have no shot at the playoffs in the near future...so get used to it.

To be dead honest, Not a chance in hell. What has the ownership shown you in committing to adding pieces and to pursue a top tier coach. Nothing is going to magically change this offseason. This team has average talent, awful leadership, pee poor owners, a GM who can't spend, and a lot of dead weight (Garcia, Hayes, Salmons, Greene). The team is a mess and it's a damn shame because of how great and hungry the fans are for a winner

Kings will never be playoff team under maloofs family

Wrong. Your comment implies the past, and the Kings were a playoff team in the past under the Maloof family. I think the Kings will be a playoff team in the future under the Maloof family, but they definitely will not be championship material. Don't think they (Maloofs) have enough Basketball IQ to sign a big name free agent/superstar, and bring in a big name/hall of fame coach...
