Will all this make resigning Bibby at the end of the year unlikely?

In the end, we should have about $20 million to play around with this summer. But who's available?? I guess we could give a butt load of money to Chauncey Billups, and bring in PJ Brown. I sure as heck dont know...???

Chauncey Billups, Mo Williams, Bibby are top point guards. Anderson Verejao, Darko Milicic are top bigs.

I just made a cursory look, but it looks like the Kings' cap space if Bibby opts out will be about $12-13 million

Not to get nitpicky on you, but the cap will probably rise next year so it will probably be about $15 million. Not to mention an extra $10 million after before you start bumping up against the tax threshold.

It's a whole lot of room.

Sounds like Darko is the only big on the market that's worth while. I guess I'd be fine with Darko and Mo Williams, but Darko's a restricted free agent.

I don't want to all nitpicky right back, but whether the cap rises (or falls) is hard to figure. Even if it were $15 million of cap space, the Kings still wouldn't be able to strictly sign players up to the luxury tax level.

It isn't chump change by any means. But, if I recall the list of top rated free agents you've given here before, there isn't a proven impact player available. I'll probably catch some flak for that because of Billups. Also, I'm pretty sure you are an advocate of Mo Williams, so I think you'd be in favor of signing him.

Fact is that Bibby is damn near the best FA on the market this year (if he opts out) so its a rather dubious comfort to have him opt out to create your capspace. Minus Bibby, plus who exactly = much of a positive? You'll be lucky to tread water that way.

As for Darko, was an advocate of us trying to get him when he was with the Pistons. Would still like to see the experiment., But as the top young big on the market, how are the same people who were screaming about the $10 mil a year to Dalembert or Nene going to feel about that same sort of number to an even more unproven kid? 22min 7.4pts 4.8reb 1.8blk. $10mil.

Can't remember where I read the estimated salary cap and a cursory search came up empty, but yeah, there's no guarantee the cap will rise although I thought it was anticipated to rise.

As for the room under the cap, you're right, it doesn't mean there's room up to the tax level per se. If there's $15 million in cap space you can only sign $15 million worth of free agents. But if the Kings re-sign Bibby or use Bibby in a S&T it's possible ot bump up against it with Bird rights, and there's also some flexibility to take back more salary in a trade (within the 125% rule)

The cap room isn't a guarantee of anything, but they should be able to do something with it to improve the team, even if that means re-signing Bibby and going after a second free agent with the MLE.

Right. Hard to see the improvement if Bibby isn't resigned. Or is resigned now that I think about it...

Also, I wouldn't want to see cash thrown at a guy because he's tall. See: Booth, Calvin; McIlvaine, Jim.

Also right. If I recall correctly (and my salary cap knowledge has decreased because, well, it isn't the off-season), the cap is based on basketball related income for the previous season. Trying to guess it's value is almost impossible.

The Kings' will have the MLE to use regardless of whether Bibby opts out or not.

Clearly Bibby is on the block. Simple as that. I heard some rumors earlier in the season and it looks to be the absolute truth.

Actually, I think you guys are worrying too much about this. Remember, the Maloofs nor Petrie ever came out and said anything about being interested in Iverson/interested in dealing Bibby.

All of this has been a production of the world wide leader in sports and other reputable and not so reputable sports news outlets which makes it very easy for management to sit with Bibby and say the media just made stuff up like they always do and that they wanted him the whole time.

In fact the maloofs publically said that they didn't want to trade Bibby in order to cover themselves should they actually not trade for Iverson. They've played their cards correctly because if they lose out on Iverson, they need to stay on good terms with Bibby.

Things will work themselves out.

The Maloofs came out and said they were in the mix yesterday. When there is this much smoke there is a fire. They are trying to deal Bibby.

Well I'm thoroughly confused by these guys. They tell the papers one day that they're in the hunt and the next day they're playing damage control and proceed to say that they may never have been in the hunt to begin with.

There seems to have been a slight miscommunication and now they're trying to save face.

You're reading way too much into stuff that has been printed out of sequence. They didn't really say they were in the hunt. They tried very hard to refer all calls to Petrie...

It's not about the Maloofs saving face. If anything, it's more about reporters/media types taking quotes and re-using them to fit their needs.

ANY player with a two-year option coming up is going to be "on the block" for the right deal.

Or the Maloofs could stick by him now and sign him to an extension like Bibby is said to be hoping for.

I am not so sure that is even an option for them at this point.

But we're looking at all this from the outside. We don't know if Bibby really wants an extension. We don't know if Bibby knows what he wants at all.

We're all involved emotionally. Petrie and the Maloofs have to balance that with financial realities. I'm just very glad I'm not responsible; if I was, Vlade would still be on the payroll, along with Doug.

;)

I don't know how we could be reading way too much into this. "We are in the mix" is a direct quote from Joe Maloof. I just don't see how they were never actually negotiating if they said that. The whole thing is just a mess right now and I guess untill Iverson is traded it could still be a possibility, although a rather small one, that he could become a King.

It is also naive to think what has transpired won't bother bibby. Last night's ca-ca withstanding, if some of our posters think he is simply a professional and will grit his teeth beyond yesterday's insult - they are in for the return of some lazy defense. Just wait and see.

Excuse me? Today's professional athletes should be looked on as professional? Um -- they are playground superstars with lots of money and no maturity required.

it's emotional to follow this team. And the panic alarm started sounding the first time Mussel blinked when it came time to coach Ron-Ron.
