Stockton,

Isiah may have won championships but Stockton was the most consummate and pure PG ever to play and made everyone that much better. (You could make a case for Magic)

Barkely or Malone?
 
Barkley, sure, he was (and is) a headcase. But at 6-4, he was able to take on any power forward in the league. That speaks a lot about his skill, and his basketball smarts.

I'm not buying that you'd have to make a case for Magic. He was a pure point guard who could also rip 20 points and 6 boards. I never could understand how that's held against him when discussing "pureness".

I'll take Barkley in terms of talent and Malone in terms of legacy.

Moses. He made the disappointing Sixers and the disappointing Rockets into championship caliber teams and is one of the few players who can hold a candle to Karl's longevity.

I don't hold that against Magic. I hold his suspect shooting against him, though. In that sense, Stockton was a much purer point guard.

However, I don't even try to put Magic in a category; he was a ball player. I treat players like Kevin Garnett and Scottie Pippen and even Charles Barkley the same way. I'm not going to knock them because they're not the prototypical player; their diversity is what makes them great.

In Magic's case, his ability to play anywhere on the court made him one of the greatest players ever. And if I had to choose between Magic and Stockton as players, I'd take Magic hands down. But as far as pure point guards are concerned, I'd take Stockton.

:confused: Magic was a deadeye from the perimeter, didn't shoot a lot of treys, but he never really had to until he started to age. No team was ever dumb enough to dare him to shoot.

I'll grant that Stockton probably took a lot more perimeter shots than Magic over their careers, and that perimeter shooting is part and parcel with being a PG. Magic could post up just about every PG in the league so shooting jumpers was usually his last option.

Garnett is more athletic and versatile and a harder cover. Malone and Shaq really took Duncan's game into the mud in the final 4 games of last year's SA/LA series. They didn't have nearly the same effect on Garnett's game because he's not as stiff as Duncan and can mix up his offense. He can take the ball inside and outside and his reach makes it more difficult for good defenders to alter his jumphooks in the paint.

This year Garnett had better results. But overall Duncan is better.
Another thing to note abt the lakers & TWolves series was that Malone didnt play most of it or hardly put in any minutes.
