Bonzi Wells
Not yet 30 years old, Bonzi Wells, shooting guard for the Sacramento Kings, has played for three NBA teams. “If you’ve got that much ability and you’re traded three times that early in your career,” says ex-NBA player and current ESPN commentator Tom Tolbert, “there’s obviously something wrong with you.”

Words like fumigate come up when people try to explain why GMs trade him. “It doesn’t bother him if his unhappiness infects the entire team,” says Memphis sportswriter Geoff Calkins, who recalls that when Grizzlies coach Hubie Brown was contemplating retirement (citing health reasons), “part of the calculus for Hubie was ‘It’s not worth it,’ and a big part of that was Bonzi. He helped bring Hubie down.”

When Brown’s successor, Mike Fratello, pulled Wells from a game at the end of last season, Bonzi threw a tantrum involving, characteristically, both profanity and projectiles. “This was in the final weeks of the season,” says Ron Higgins, another Memphis sportswriter, “when the Grizzlies were desperately trying to make the playoffs. Other players looked at him like, What the hell are you doing?”

Recalls sportswriter Jason Quick, who covered Bonzi in Portland: “He would flip off a fan and the next day say, ‘I blacked out.’ He’s such a con man. When the TV lights went on, he’d put on that million-dollar smile, then be an *** when they left.” He spat, infamously, on Danny Ferry. He bitched constantly at his coaches. He was fined for bad-mouthing his own fans in Sports Illustrated. He made a veiled threat after a reporter wrote a negative story about him. “He told me, ‘Don’t be surprised one day if you show up to practice with a steak over your eye,’ ” Quick remembers. “And I said, ‘If you want to do that, I’ll be a rich man.’ He said, ‘I’m not dumb enough to do it myself. I’ll have my posse do it.’ ”

That article is top 10 in sports, which doesn't specify how it was judged and who was polled. We do have Maurice Carter, though, who played 4 games on a 10-day. He was able to find out what a bad teammate Kobe was even though they never played 1 min together on the court (Kobe was on the IL when Carter was called up).

If you read the intro...my guess is that NOBODY was polled. Sounds like the writers decided and then went out and found people to talk to them.

As an aside, I certainly cannot speak to the Memphis writers, who I assume are legit, but that Quick character is just ridiculously over the top when it comes to Bonzi and has been involved in a blatant slime war with him for years and years. You'll notice all the Portland things were from Quick, including the threat to get beaten up (which may in fact have been deserved ;) ). Comparatively Poison is desperate to have Webb's love child.

Geoff is a joke. He's the same guy who pissed off Jason Williams last year after the playoff loss.

Honestly, how can he be the whatever XXX number hated player in the NBA when most people have NO CLUE who he is. He has been a small figure on a couple of teams.

Kobe Bryant has been a massive figure in the national spotlight, same with Ron Artest. Ron's crime is a lot more childish than Kobe's and is why I voted for him (on top of being a Kings fan). I don't think Ron is that well hated (e/c in Detroit and maybe in Indy), but I guess more so than other players who most people don't give a flip about.

My question to Kings Fans is "Is it too early to judge Bonzi Wells"? I mean it seems like the guy has been absolutely sensational since he has been here. i have not even seen one hint of Bonzi being a troublemaker.

I guess what i am saying is for Bonzi to be one of the Top 10 Bad Guys in sports? I just don't see it or is it too early to tell.

By the way, I would have voted for Danny fortson, but I voted for Kobe.

I don't know that Kobe is hated so much by his peers around the league. Ray Allen and Shaq, sure. And then all or most of his teammates. I'm sure as far as fans go, he's probably up there at the top. Especially amongst Kings fans :D

I'd vote Fortson if he were on the list. The guy just hurts people, plus he's not a very good teammate either. But since he's not an option, I'll say Kobe.

Of course Kobe would get the most votes on a Kings Fans website, I'm not sure it's true as a whole in the NBA.

I voted for Kobe by the way...

Dirk, the way he plays and acts on the court, he thinks he is the greatest, he whines alot, and has a tendendy to start playing dirty or chippy when his team is down, its just all pathetic, i used to like him better when he didnt have a EGO...

If you really wanted this POLL to have a semblance of validity you might consider asking questions and drawing conclusions relevant to you sampeling pool. For example while this poll has no hope of accuratly reflecting who the most hated palyer in the NBA is... it might tell you what NBA player is most hated by Kings fans.

For the record I would more than likely pick either: Fortson, Najara or the most evil Raja Bell.

Mourning would be my vote for holding several teams hostage. Fortson is a good pick too.

As for Bonzi Wells, who hasn't wanted to spit on Danny Ferry?

And as for Jason Williams, he deserves a lot of ire for his racist tirade when he was a King, but I want to thank him for the phrase, "You ain't writing nothin', homeBOI," which I've used for amusment many a time. The sportswriter deserved it, by the way. You're really pulling it out of you *** when you criticize someone for valuing family over basketball.

If we're talking about the most disliked by fans, then it's Kobe. People love to hate him.

If we're talking about the most disliked player in the NBA, then I'm not sure. I don't think there are very many players that are generally disliked by their teammates, coaches and GMs.

I would have voted for Najera but he's not on the list. I can't stand the dude.

I voted for Spreewell as the "Most hated player in the NBA" as his "gotta feed my family" line was just so disrespectful to 99% of the people in the world.

If I was voting for who I hated the most, it would be Kobe. He's got incredible talent coupled with the class of a cowpie. What irks me the most is the "pass" he's given by the NBA brass, NBA referees, most of the print and TV press, and anyone with the low self esteem one must have to be a Lakers fan!

some players that are hated are feared. guys like wells and artest are feared and the haters actually are afriad (thats why they hate em). i would put bowen in that list btw

I hate Robert Horry. He is in top of my list. His three pointer killed Sacramento's chance to become World Champs

1. Robert Horry
2. MARK CUBAN (has to be included)
3. Dunleavy
4. Nash
5. Najera
6. Kobe Bryant
7. Alonzo Moarning
8. Bowen
9. Tim Duncan
10.Sam Cassell

Oh good lord. When are people going to let that myth die?

Robert Horry DIDN'T kill our chances.

The worst choke job in the history of the Kings franchise AND a total melt-down and inability to shoot free throws in the overtime of game 7 is what killed Sacramento's chance to become NBA champs.

It's really past time to take off the purple-tinted glasses and be honest, at least with yourself if no one else. The Kings had every chance in the world to win game 7. They LOST that game. Period.

See I voted before i read again! I thought the most disliked player that is currently a player in the NBA, in the eyes of the fans, not the most disliked in the eyes of his peers.

So I voted Ron Artest.
