Who is Beno?

Do you think Evans will start at PG form day one? I sure hope so. That'll send Beno the biggest message.

I don't know if they start Evans or not, but I'd be shocked if doesn't get major minutes from day one. And by the way, Beno has already received the message. Draft Day is still ringing in his ears. He's got competition from two point guards, and the message from the front office to Beno is that they are very unhappy with last year's performance. He's got to be wondering if he's going to be next year's Kenny Thomas.

So who is the “real” Beno. I know that it seems like a bit if a rhetorical question. I ask it because I think everyone here has written him off – and that may include me. However, it may be pre-mature. The first season that he was here he played pretty well. Last season was abysmal. The stats from the two years look pretty much the same, but those can be deceiving.

If Beno plays like he did his first year people may think much differently about the Beno situation. It may go from, “how do we get rid of this guy and his contract,” to “hey, this guy can service the PG position really well for 20 minutes/night.”

But I don’t know. It is the “Tale of Two Beno’s.” Which Beno will show-up next year?

I don't see why so many people keep saying Beno was good in 07-08 and bad in 08-09. He had almost the exact same stats as the year before! His 3-point shooting went way down, he shot less and combined that cost him about two points per game. Everything else is actually a little better. He'll probly bounce back a little on his shooting, but he is what he is. He was a good cheap stopgap solution in 07-08 who got ridiclously overpaid based off a decent year, then had a year that was slightly worse.

YR MIN FG% 3P% FT% STL TO REB AST PTS
07-08 32.0 .463 .387 .850 0.9 2.3 3.3 4.3 12.8
08-09 31.1 .461 .310 .820 1.1 2.2 3.0 4.7 11.0

Stats aren't everything. Statisticly, its true Beno was one pretty much the same level last year as the year prior. But he didn't seem nearly as engaged as he was before, didn't have the same energy, was worse in the 4th qrtr, and had some very costly turnovers at critical times, among other things. So while his stats were there, he seemed much more distant, and I didn't get the feeling the coaches or his teammates trusted him.

I think it is a mistake to just compare stats of players from one year to the next. The stats only tell half the story. Anyone who watched Beno the last 2 years could see the we were watching 2 different beno's. If you take away the stats and just watch tape comparing the last 2 years, it is clear Beno had a marger impact during the 07-08 season

In four words, I think you just summed up 99.9% of Udrih's problem.

I think we that we can thank Westphal for that. It was an entire team attitude deal last year. This year we're seeing a lot more energy and hustle and it has been contagious.
