We need to focus on how playing defense can lead to a smoother offense. We also need to conduct an elementary course of on-court communication. A lot of times these kids seem to look like they're afraid to say anything to each other. I look back fondly on the days of THE TEAM, when Bibby and Webber could convey whole sentences with a mere glance. Of course, this might have been because Bibby never talked anyway. ;)

Pssst. Brickie? You could add the shadow puppet option. You have the technology, you know. ;)

Definition of Smart coaching. And the racism that is alienating Jimmer. And teaching Tyreke how to play PF.

Seriously though, guards not double teaming so much. Think that's a good start.

PICK AND ROLL.

The proper setting of a screen and the dribbler actually USING it with the other players doing something that might remotely benefit from it.

The perimeter players not leaving their man to help the big men. Stay at home, on your man - they are who's been killing the Kings this year (outside shooting and.....)

.... perimeter players HAVE to learn how to stay in front of their men and stop more penetration. It's a sieve out there and the big men rotate to stop it, leaving opposing bigs layups or great offensive RBD opportunities.

Learn how not to get stuck on screens. It's like the Kings perimeter players' bodies are made of glue.

How to send an interior pass to Cousins establishing presence so that he doesn;t catch it 18 ft from the hoop and it doesn;t get stolen.

Stop the weak handoff passes that continue to get picked off.

Work on spacing and positioning on the break so you know where trailers will be.

Crap, I'm running out of patience to list everything they should be practicing.

Smart went away from the pick n roll because he wanted movement from the other players. They weren't getting good shots off the PnR and the shooting % went up when they went away.

uhhh..... I've been watching this team like a hawk for YEARS with one of the highest-priority watch-signs of "was that an actual pick-and-roll we ran?!"
So I can say pretty confidently that no Kings team in the past 3 seasons has been able to "go away from the pick and roll" because they never HAD a pick and roll to go away from.

That weak-sauce movement that our bigs float out from the elbows to the 3pt line and then our guard invariably dribbles AWAY from them? Yeah, that's not a pick-and-roll. Never was.

We have run (I estimate) less than 20 pick and rolls.... REAL p-n-r's in the past 3 seasons.
Westphal didn't ran the play - wasn't in his playbook - and under Smart there have only been sporadic (spontaneous) sightings of it from IT and Jimmer primarily.
Tyreke doesn't know how to run it, and neither do MT or Salmons.

Both... At either end it doesnt matter, but starting on offense would be to our advantage. We need more attention to our half court set which is something Smart's running game neglects. At the same time, it neglects our half court defense.

edit: to clarify, i meant that Smart's running game neglected our half court defense.

Spaceman, OTL, malingering, and such. Penalty - wind sprints, laps, and such. Rewards - playing time, carrying coach's chalk board to games, etc. etc.

More DEFENSE and enough with the ball hogging and heroism. Pass the damn ball already. Small ball is not working, either.

Go Kings!

Maybe Smart should just rotate all five players out every 3 minutes. That's about how long I've seen them sustain defensive effort for any length of time. Why push against a brick wall? Just go with the flow....

I just wanted to touch on the ball hogging and heroism point. I think that's due to having 4 guys ( thomas, thornton. Reke, and Cousins) in the lineup. All the guys want their own shot but there's only one ball. IMO it'll be wise to move IT and Thornton to the bench, while bringing in another "PG" - Jimmer - so Reke and Cousins have the shots they think they should take. Which again coincides with our half court offense, and defense...

We have the scorers on the team. Might as well just focus on the offense the rest of the season.

Up to Petrie to put defenders on the team this summer. You don't spend all your time coaching Jimmer to play defense since the results will be incremental at best. You put an elite big shotblocker and an elite SF defender on the team, then coach defense and watch our defense improve.
