What Kings fans can expect from Z-Bo in 18-19

Nothing is guaranteed in season two as a King for Randolph. The 37-year-old forward cashed in with the Kings, signing a two-year, $24 million deal in 2017. He’s owed $11.7 million this season, making him difficult to move via trade.

The Kings plan to go young this year from the opening tip. That doesn’t bode well for Z-Bo, who is nearly twice the age of Marvin Bagley III and Harry Giles III.

"Making him difficult to move via trade?"

I certainly expect him shipped at the deadline for a late first round pick.

I hope (expect might be asking too much) we see him in very limited minutes until then and he is primarily a mentor to the two young bigs that will be the centerpiece of our franchise for the next decade.

Late first round pick? Holy crap the Kings won't even be able to get a late 2nd round pick for ZBo. The odds that ZBo isn't on the roster at the end of the season are very low. He makes way too much, only way I see him not here is if the Kings waive him.

Not straight up but in a package of expirings for a bad contract and a pick.

Buyout after the deadline.

I think his stay in Sacramento will be remembered well as a person who gave the best that he has at this point in his career.
I hope he continues to work with the younger players and they will benefit greatly from it.

A return to where he played later in the season in some kind of deal would please me and hopefully show a appreciation for the great career he has given the fans around the league.

Well said.
For the remainder of his career as a King, I'd love to see him play the mentor and cheerleader role. But wouldn't it be great if he could also teach each one of our bigs at least one still-useful thing from his bag of tricks? I'm not sure that we saw any of Z-Bo last year in WCS or Skal. But don't misunderstand me. I don't want any of our young bigs to become Z-Bo. But he used to be a clutch scorer (near the basket) and a fine rebounder. In fact, he had a couple of seasons where he averaged 12 boards/game. Surely he's got a few tricks that would be useful to our young guys in today's NBA.

I don't want him anywhere near the court during the regular season but I'd love to see the Kings keep him around all year to help coach Bagley. Both guys are lefties and play the same position. ZBo has one of the most effective yet simplest post games I've seen in the NBA and I'm not sure how much of it can transfer to Bagley but it's worth a shot. ZBo uses his weight to his advantage to where he always winds up in good positioning and doesn't need to do anything crazy or overly crafty to get his shot up.

In Bagley's highlights you'll see him twisting and turning all over, spinning in the wrong direction and then putting the ball up awkwardly with his left hand and that's something you've never seen ZBo do because it's just not an efficient way of playing basketball. Hopefully ZBo can teach him to simplify his post game and to be able to get shots up without having to use his athleticism all the time. I'm just not sure if the information can be used by Bagley because he's not going to be able to uproot guys with his weight and back them down the way ZBo does. Either way it's worth a shot to see if he can help develop him.

It seems like he might play for a few months.

I’m failing to understand the “youth movement from day one” narrative around the team. Surely, Fox, Bogdan, Hield, Bagley and Giles are good enough to play a lot. If for some reason merit was an issue (and I don’t think they will be) those players will get a boost to develop them.

After that, it’s not like there are any / a ton of good vets. Also, all things being equal, they Kings will certainly play a younger player over an older player. So perhaps a moot point.

But, if coach thinks a vet … Z-Bo, or Kufos, or Shumpert … provides 15 minutes of basketball that provides the Kings with a better chance to win than one of the young players not listed in the first paragraph, why should we assume the Kings are going to play lesser kids over the vets?

The Kings owned their 2018 pick and chased as many wins as possible while ensuring that Fox and Bogdan got minutes. In 2019, they don’t have their pick. They want to stack up as many wins as possible for several reasons. Playing kids for the sake of playing kids doesn’t get you wins … especially not a team as bad as the Kings.

Bad teams and their media sell hope. Normally, that’s a pick or impact free agent. Neither are coming to Sacramento in the summer of 2019. So, they are selling “it’s all about growing the kids really hard.” Again, if coach thinks it’s close between Shumpert and Jackson or Z-Bo and Skal, then I assume the kids play.

Based upon last year, I don’t think the coach thinks any of his forward are currently better than Z-Bo. I wouldn’t be shocked if he played a decent amount early and that is scaled down a lot a Bagley and Giles get better.

A warm bench seat.

We might see a bit of him early on but now that we have Giles and Bagley, plus a stretch 4 option in Beli. As well as WCS, Skal, and Kosta. Joerger is going to have a hard time shoehorning him in for 20 minutes per and getting away with it.

Randolph can still score, especially in short stints when he is fresh.
I can see him in some situations being valuable on offense. Maybe he takes over Buddy's second string leader role.
Just don't ask him to play defense.
He is a good attitude guy in the locker room, on the bench, and on the bus.

I like the idea of "coach ZBO". He does use his weight well, but ZBO is also a master of footwork in the post. You have to be when your vertical is -2 inches. That's something Giles and Bagley can both certainly learn from.

I'll believe it when I see it. Expect Joerger will start him and then he will take every 3d or 4th game off. Guessing he gets over 20 mpg.

Quote from Joerger (from Media Day thread):

Kings coach Dave Joerger on roles of veteran big men Zach Randolph and Kosta Koufos: "We are committed to playing a lot of young guys. I'm not saying that those guys won't play, but the bigger priority is to play as many young guys as possible."

Zach was never going to play. He’s old and we have too many players. But I’ll take it a step further and say WCS won’t play much either IMO. I think Giles/Bagley/Skal/Bjelica will get a lot of minutes. Skal looking good, and Bjelica is a solid, fitting player

Call me skeptical, also curious on Shumps court time too.

Shump will get time Id assume, as it’s only Buddy/Bogs (injured)/Jackson/McLemore on the wings with some guys who can play there in a pinch. He’s also only in his late 20s and has looked good in his workouts.
