What is your opinion on Darren Collison?

Please feel free to merge or move this thread, I wasn't sure in which of the active threads it belonged in. :)

Anyways, I wanted to find out everyone's opinion on Darren Collison thus far. We're now pretty well into the season and you pretty much know what to expect from him. When he was first acquired, I was confident that he would take that next step with us in terms of being an indisputable starting PG as opposed to a solid backup. At this point, we know he isn't going to produce 25+ points a night on a consistent basis, but I love what he brings to the team. He's not a guy who's going to "wow" you or stand out in the stat sheet, also I haven't looked into his AST/TO ratio, as I am pretty curious as to what that may be. The hustle and grit, early on, seemed to have been contagious and even rubbed off on our guys. I guess the main question that I have for you all is... do you view Darren as our permanent solution to the starting point guard position? Nobody can question his heart, but I have heard many fans say that the Kings would be better off with a dynamic, impact point guard.
 
DC is a very solid defender, able to break down the defense with his quickness and a willing passer with a relatively low usage rate for a PG. He's the kind of PG I want on a team that features Gay and Cousins on offense and/or on a team where you want to feature lots of ball movement. Which is why I thought it was odd that the front office pined for a ball dominant PG in Rondo and yet went out and got a very different style PG in Collison. Kind of a mixed message there.

Anyway, Collison's biggest drawbacks are that he is a subpar 3 point shooter and that he can be bullied by bigger PGs because of his slight build. Knowing that I would have liked to see a bigger, defensive PG signed as a backup. Someone along the lines of Earl Watson from five years ago. But that's in a world where the Kings have more firepower off the bench and don't need to rely on their backup point to score a lot.

I completely agree, very valid points there. With that said, are you okay with DC as our starting PG for years to come?

Assuming Gay and Cousins are still on the team? Then yeah, I wouldn't have a problem with it.

That said, had the Kings drafted Elfrid Payton (or end up with someone like Mudiay this year) Collison is ideal because he can start until the youngster is ready to take the reins and then you have a very good backup PG in DC. Obviously that'd be true if the Kings were to trade for a stud PG but I don't see them having the assets to do that (unless Boogie wants out) without including Collison in the first place.

Collison is a steady starter who was a big part of the early defensive turnaround under Malone and he's a very high quality backup who is a bargain as a starter and not overpaid as a reserve. I think it was a great signing for the Kings.
 
I'm very happy with him. He's given us everything I've expected out of him, however, I wouldn't want to see him as our starting PG next year. I think he's similar to the PGs like Jeff Teague and Mike Conley, but they are definitely better than him. I believe that if the Kings could somehow acquire a better pg, it would help Cousins a ton.

I don't think Collison has that it factor in him. We've all seen how guys like AD, Howard, Plumlee, and Drummond get easy easy dunks. What do they all share in common? Guards who can throw the ball in at a great position for their guards to get the easy shot. Here in Sac, we struggle to even get Cousins the ball. Imagine if we could give Cousins all those easy opportunities. That is why i think the kings should upgrade their starting PG position.

Collision suites best as a backup. If you'd want to play to his strentghs, he's a great backup.

Would you guys mind if we moved Collison to backup role next year and sign Reggie Jackson?
 
Collison is good enough to start on a playoff team, but not so good that you can't bring him off the bench for at least a dozen better pg's.
His contract reflects that.

I reflect that same sentiment, great post. Although I'm not sure Reggie Jackson would be the answer, I completely agree.

I think Reggie Jackson could end up like Harden. He can shine in a better and bigger role. Only realistic option for us to be able to upgrade at PG. Or maybe Dragic if he's unhappy
 
I like Collison. Plays within the system, doesn't complain, always looking to make the right play. It's obvious to me that his lack of confidence in the 3pt shot holds him back from time to time. I hope we keep him, because if we end up finding a better PG then he is able to play off the bench at a price that still makes sense.
 
Collison has done well for the team. He doesn't need shots and he runs the offense. He can play some good defesne, but he struggles versus larger guards who can body him.

I think the team has had to depend on him more than they planned to and more than Collison is up to the task thereof. I think they wanted a more even PG playtime distribution, but Sessions has been a dud.
 
I think that due to Collison's contract size, no matter how you slice it, he's a great component for this team.
He won't get in the way of Cousins or Rudy, and he (and his contract) would work perfectly fine off the bench if an upgrade was found at PG, and of course he could be included as a high value-add to any sort of trade that might go down if it made sense to move him.

Collison is absolutely the least of my worries for this team now or in the foreseeable future.

I concur on Collison:) The pundits said the knock on Elfrid Payton was that he was not NBA ready. The pundits said Stauskas was NBA ready. The pundits was wrong. Right now I would prefer Payton for the Kings.

I actually share his opinion to an extent. Personally, I believe the trend amongst most fans is that they are "satisfied" with Darren. I'm not exactly ecstatic or overly optimistic about him being our starting PG for presumably years to come.
 
Everyone on this roster are placeholders except Cuz if you want to be realistic.......and the upgrades over Rudy are few. It's the same for every roster in the league. That being said, I'm happy with DC. We have more pressing concerns than him and its the bench play. Eventually, we need to consolidate our PF position.

Hopefully into someone taller than 6'9". The lack of a backup center (no, Hollins doesn't count) is really killing the defense in the second unit. That and the insistence on playing Williams over Casspi.
 
Collison has the skillset to be a starting PG for the Kings for years to come. He just needs to use that skillset in a more aggressive manner, as he has been doing in more recent games.
 
He may be best as a backup as some here say but if the rest of the starters had played as well Ashe has so far we might be as many as 5 games ahead of where we are in the win column.
 
Its all about fit. Sure there are lots of point guards out there the are more skilled than Collison. The question is how would they fit? Any player that needs to have the ball in their hands to be effective wouldn't be a good fit with Cousins and Rudy on the floor at the same time.

You want defenses to struggle to guard Cousins. It isnt necessarily ideal to have an offense that features a pg that
breaks down the defense and gets his bigs easy baskets. It may be a personal preference but I favor getting Cousins the ball on the low to high block and letting him go to work.
 
He is the best we have at the moment, I don't mind having DC on this team but his lack of a deep ball hurts a lot of times and his turnovers can be head scratching as well because it happens so frequently. I do appreciate his passion and willingness to play defense, which is rare on this team. I don't think he will be here long anyway...if he plays out his three year deal here I would be surprised to be perfectly honest.

I'm kinda with you, doesn't it feel like they will be trading half these guys just like last year? I mean, the blatant lack of respect for any of them is glaring. They can't be thinking this is the way to build a long term trusting relationship, can they?

Why can't we have both? Why can't Cousins ever ever ever get easy wide open dunks? Why can't that be an addition to our offense?

I get what you're saying, but you want to get easy baskets.. I like seeing Cuz bang DL but he needs to get easy baskets like every big in the NBA does. But he can't. The answer to that? Poor guard passing. Poop offense.

That's exactly my thought as well. If this front office has shown anything...it's that they are not loyal to their players.

Playing off of Cousins is supposed to get the less talented players easier shots as opposed to getting our most talented player easy shots. I don't need or want a ball dominant pg to create a bunch of offense when I have Cousins and to a lesser degree Rudy. Let's not get caught up on individual match ups either. The fact that Rondo and Paul are much better players than Collison doesn't require that I replace Collison with someone better. I'd be much better off addressing other issues and may very well never even get to replacing Collison before the team becomes very good. PG is a role players position for us, or at least it used to be.

Actually, Collison has gotten his 3PT% up to .382 for the season, and over the last six games he's hitting 2.5 threes per game on .625 shooting. He started out dreadfully this season, but he's just shy of a .370 career shooter from three, which is a pretty decent number.
 
He's been really solid. 16 points, 6 assists, 1.7 steals. Shooting 46% from the field and 38% from 3.

He's also our 3rd best defender while having to play one of the toughest positions to defend.

He's been fantastic this year.
