I think it should be pointed out that there are knee injuries, and there are knee injuries. The injury Griffin suffered isn't nearly as bad as tearing your ACL or having microfracture surgery. He just had a cracked kneecap. Basicly the same injury that Oden had. I don't know if the severity is the same, but its pretty much like just letting a bone heal as oppossed to reattaching a tendon, or trying to recreate the cushion in the knee.
So unless there was some other complication I don't know about, he should be good as new. Even if he were to lose just a little athleticism, he has some to spare. Remember this is a 6'10", 250 pound guy that has close to a 40" vertical leap and terrific lateral movement. I should also point out that this was a freak accident, similar to Oden's and prior to this injury he hasn't been injury prone.
Blake Griffin actually has a history of knee injuries.
Jan 14, 2008 - Sprained MCL in left knee
Mar 2, 2008 - Torn Cartilage (arthroscopic surgery)
The latest cracked knee cap is a different injury, but it was also suppose to only set him back 6 weeks initially. It ends up being season ending.
No doubt he is great and has huge potential just like Oden when he first entered the league. But injuries like this have a pattern. Being a high flyer doesn't help Blake's knees. Even if its not the most serious kind of knee injuries each time, it really hinders the career of a player. Check Andrew Bynum & Greg Oden.
And look, I truly want Blake to do well because since watching games at the Sports Arena with my dad as a kid, I'll always have fond memories of the Clips. Not that they are "my team" or anything, but I like to see them do well in laker town. I remember draftexpress or one of the draft websites said "Knee Problems?" as a CON in his scouting report. When I heard Blake was out for the season, I immediately remembered that and thought... man we really dodged a bullet by not getting the #1 pick.
