What does Peja have to do in order to get the max?

Peja is on his contract year. We all know that he will try hard to get that max contract. IMO, he doesn't deserve a max contract unless he averages 23 pts, 7 rbs, 3 ast and produces in the playoff. It is not wise to pay an one-dimensional player max dollars but I am sure that some desperate teams in the NBA will do such thing. The Kings are not the nobody that they were six years ago. So, they shouldn't be in a desperate mode when signing players.

Even if Stojakovic has one of his "normal" years he will still get the max from some team. I think the Kings will pay up as well.

Fact is with the new CBA where max salaries are reduced and salary cap increased, many players that are not max type players will get the max. If Michael Redd got a max and if couple of other good but not great players got the max, I am sure Pedja will get is as well. Thats as clear as daylight.

To GET "his max? Just don't get injured. Market is stupid right now, and there are almost no competing free agents. All the scorers on this team will keep his numbers down, but it really won't matter unless he blows out a knee or something.

To EARN his max? Can't really. Not without dramatically mutating into a player he simply isn't. I'm predicting that when Peja hits 35 (which is not forever in the future anymore) there will still be people waiting around for Peja to magically mutate into a stud and have his "breakout season". Its like kiddies who refuse to face the truth about Santa Claus depsite catching mommy putting presents under the tree last year.

finally, a forum that doesnt bash peja. please keep it that way. we had enough peja bashing forums.
I see you haven't been around here for long ;)

Don't hold your breath. Someone will sink the boots in ;)

Short answer: If he grows a pair?!

Long answer: Personally, I think that if he could put up 24/8/3 consistently he would be a max player. Too late for that, since he has just one year to do it. Even if he somehow exceeds those numbers we will have to wander was that a contract-year miracle. But a pure shooter at 3, who can put up efficient 24 ppg and add 8rpg and 3apg to that is easily worth max in this league today. Not because those a gaudy numbers but because pure shooters are few and far in between and they seldom/never excell in other areas of the game.

Peja will get the max, if not from the Kings from elsewhere.

Establishing max contracts might have been the worst thing the NBA ever did. The way the CBA is currently constituted, movement in free agency rarely extends to premier players, leaving a couple team fighting over 2nd tier players. The max contract now gives agents a target when a bidding war erupts.

The intent was to put a limit on superstar contracts, but I don't think the NBA or the player's association foresaw guys like Michael Redd getting max deals.

As a Kings fan, Peja's situation worries me. I don't want to see the team give him the max, but that will likely be the asking price. Letting him walk for nothing might be prudent financially, but it weakens the team without opening up caproom.

I'm hoping Petrie signs him to a reasonable extension or trades him for close to market value.

Peja does not deserve the max.

He scores.. That's about it. If you put Kyle Korver, Mike Miller, Brent Barry, ect ect ect in that position they will accomplish the same Peja does.

Of course Peja is better at what he does than the 3 others listed, but they would be able to do basically the same thing Peja does.

I hope Peja has a very good year for the team's sake, but I also don't believe he's a max-type player (few people are). But if each team has one max guy in the new CBA, then Peja is arguably as important as Bibby or Brad is to the team. I also rationalize that the Kings have had Peja at a bargain-price the last few years, so it may be his turn to get his money.

Like become a ferocious dunking, shot-blocking machine? *yawn*

I'd settle for someone who pulls down more than 3 boards a game and acts like he cares, even when he can't get open or his shot isn't falling. How about actually moving TOWARD the ball when it's up for grabs? (never mind hitting the floor for a loose ball, that's probably a bit much to ask)

The Hawks gave Joe Johnson the max. Some team (hopefully not us) will offer Peja the max.

Maybe that is why we have a glut at the 2 and 3 spots -- insurance for when Peja walks.

Pre-season stats = weak. I can't see him averaging 3 RPG during the season. Even low 4. But, that's your prediction/expectation.

Same for anyone (not just here) who is worried or something, over SAR's rebounding because of pre-season games and stats. Just with him it's completely ridiculous and unrealistic.

Agreed on him not hustling sometimes (in general). Though for looseballs it's a constant.

I predict Peja will have a decent, but not spectacular year (barring injury) and will get the max from the Maloofs anyway.

Though I honestly feel he is not and has never been a max player.

That's not fair.

Yes, we criticize him and at times get pretty ascerbic about it. But Kingsfans.com is not about bashing any player, whether it was Webber, Peja or anyone else.

----------------------------------------------

What will he have to do to get the max? IMHO nothing short of a banner year would do it. If he comes out and really contributes, then he deserves a decent payday - and I'm pretty sure the Kings will offer him one.

Peja's biggest enemy could well be his agent.

Why would his agent be a problem. Peja's a max player. That's determined by what teams will pay him, not what local fans think. If someone's stupid enough to pay him max..someone is..then I don't know why he wouldn't want the max.

basically, I started this post with the intent to find out whether the thought of Peja as an non-max guy is a common thought among Kings fans. Well, it seems like most Kings fans are rational enough to see the true value of their favorite Kings players. Yes, there are teams that will give max to Peja but the is it a smart move? I don't think so. Basically, the Kings already overpaid for Bibby because the management didn't have much options back then with Bibby's heroic effor in that playoff series and the Kings were in the hunt for a title. This current version of the Kings are not a title contender. Therefore, it would be foolish to invest their money into another 2nd tier guy, and thus eliminate any other options of ever becoming a true title contender in the next five years. Sometimes, it is wiser to take a step back and go in another direction which will lead to the destination. For the Kings, that destination is the NBA title.

Just because the market dictates that he'll probably get max doesn't mean he'll earn it or be worth it in the long term.

I like Peja, would like to keep Peja on the Kings, but have not ever seen him as being worthy of max even if someone out there (likely the Maloofs) are dumb enough to give it to him.

What other teams are in a position to give Peja the max next year?

Chicago and Atlanta immediately come to mind. The Bulls are by far the scariest, but with Deng already there and a more glaring need at the PF/C with Nene available (as I said in the NBA forum) you would think they'd be heading in another direction.

ATL, as established this summer, can wreak havoc on the free agent market by throwing around max money. But still, they already have Williams, Harrington, Smith and Childress, not to mention the recently maxed out Johnson, at the swing position. Sure, they'll stick JJ at PG and Harrington or Williams at the 4, but I still don't think they'd drop the max on Peja unless it was some sort of sign and trade and if they had already failed to get Ben Wallace.

The other option is, of course, trade him, but I feel that if it hasn't happened this summer it won't be done. Petrie and the Maloofs saw last year what a midseason deal can do to team chemistry. That's not to say there won't be amicable partners looking for at least expiring contracts in deadline deals--Boston with Paul Pierce comes to mind--but I don't see us doing that unless things are really looking bad and chemistry has already gone to hell anyway.

At any rate, I think next summer will be interesting in a variety of ways, as will the season. But you all know that already.

With the new CBA in place, if Peja doesn't really play at the top of his game this year, he may well NOT get max deal offers from us or anyone else. If his agent tries to hard, under those conditions, to get him to hold out for the biggest deal possible, he could find himself on a team making lots of money but not doing anything past April.

Of course, considering I cannot ever remember him actually saying he wants to win a title, who knows how much difference April would make. I still firmly believe his major goal in life - and it's understandable - was to win a title for his home country. That was emotion. Playing in the NBA is just a job; a very lucrative job, but just a job nonetheless.

This is what he needs:

G GS MPG FG% 3P% FT% OFF DEF RPG APG SPG BPG TO PF PPG
81 81 40.3 .480 .433 .927 1.1 5.1 6.3 2.1 1.33 .17 1.89 2.00 24.2

Look Faimiliar?

I agree.

But, Marvin won't be playing PF yet. Not regularly anyways.
