Wes Wilcox leaving for University of Utah job

I woulda liked to think it was a joke, but seeing vlade sitting with Vivek at a couple of games here and on the road, it’s not a good feeling.
Any other city, if their GM made vlades mistake of passing on Luca and taking bagley, he wouldn’t be sitting courtside anymore cause the fans would be booing the hell out of him at every appearance. Here? Not so much. That’s why I wouldn’t put it past Vivek in trying to bring Vlade back into the fold. He knows kings fans are very VERY forgiving and Vivek really trusts vlade.

“nothing wrong with a farewell message”

says you.
im gonna go with Sam Amicks opinion. Thanks.

im also gonna go with Jerry Reynolds’s who says these transactions, a front office guy leaving during the season, is just not the norm.
he didn’t say anything was wrong with it? He said usually assistants don’t give farewells and then he clarified that he was not an assistant GM in practice and he should have been given a different and more appropriate title. He also was here for 5 years. Mountain out of molehill.

Yeah but then Kings fans couldn’t have their customary existential meltdown now then could they?

We are in a pretty special fan board doom spiral right now. Mostly feels to me like a step-back-and-observe moment rather than a walk-people-off-ledge moment, for whatever reason.
This has been a tough year, but I would agree with that.... At the same time, I'm definitely anticipating doom. That may not be totally fair but not unprecedented with this team. I suspect there are a lot of people that finally felt a little bit of sunlight on their skin with this team the last couple years. I don't think it's unreasonable to feel like we are spiraling back into NBA irrelevance and will be subsequently thrown back into the dungeon.

Also, love Jerry, but the business of the college game is substantially different than in his day, to say the least. I would not be surprised if we see more midseason departures for college programs now. The GM position that Wilcox is taking didn’t even exist, what, 9 months ago?
there is also a lot more stability in the college game, at least with coaches and upper management. It’s a minor miracle to be a coach of the same team in the NBA for more than 5 seasons. GM spots a bit more stable but Wes might have walked into a forever job.

It's hard to understate just how much the college game has changed in the past 2-3 years. Kids basically have the option to become free agents every offseason, and, though it's a bit less openly acknowledged, teams have been taking more and more opportunities to encourage their players to go elsewhere to open up scholly spots for the transfers they really want. And starting about a week and a half ago and continuing for at least a few weeks after the tournament ends is the absolute chum-in-the-water free-for-all of portal transfers that will dictate whether your program is going to be competing for a conference championship or if they're going to be going 3-15. If you think that Utah didn't insist that Wilcox come and get started recruiting portal transfers RIGHT NOW, you don't understand the game.

The Utah schools have been absolutely dominating the NIL game too. Wes has a good opportunity to look really good doing a relatively stress free job (I mean, I don’t think Utah is getting quite as much big money as BYU but they’re still probably doing better for themselves than a lot of other schools of a similar standing.)

No. Hell no. Vlade gets an official title of anything with this franchise I’m done. I hope it burns. I hope he fails. Send him out of town AGAIN with a paper bag on his head. Maybe crashing a second time we can burn that 21 in the rafters.

I totally get the historically exploitative nature of NCAA basketball of my childhood, but the current state just makes me sad.

And maybe he learned from his last run! Bring vlade back
The thing about Vlade is that he and Christie are both the types to really fit in with anyone. Vivek had Dumars kind of knifing Vlade in the back and Vlade still played it cool for awhile. If Vlade came aboard my guess is it would be more of a "vibes" thing than lead decision making. Vlade took the heat for a lot of stuff but was Vlade really doing it all? Doubtful.

And this is probably just me galaxybraining myself into a take but I would actually feel solid about Vlade being back in BB ops if Monte was still running player evaluation/draft ops. How many times did we see Vlade inexplicably flip absolute garbage into first round picks (A clearly phoning it in Belinelli somehow got us a first round pick or the time he turned a mid-lotto pick into a slightly lower pick and Bogi) only for Vlade the draft evaluator to turn those picks into no useful players of note (the Belli pick turned into Malachi Richardson/the time he turned the number 10 overall pick into Justin Jackson and Harry Giles). Vlade the gambling addict who time after time randomly pulled rabbits out of his hat in terms of draft asset acquisition can come back. Vlade the player evaluator can take a looooong walk down a short pier.

Hardly, only a few seasons left and if he's healthy and producing like this he's for sure a +. This worst contract stuff was during injury and with more time left.
And before the new TV deals led to rapid salary cap inflation. Lavine and Domas both signed near-max deals which is import because actual Max deals are tied to cap space percentage while both of these guys are on hard number deals.

I mean, if the Vlade who drafted Georgios Papagiannis comes back, wake me up when we're ready to emerge from the darkness. If a different Vlade shows up to the office, don't let me hit the hay.

He wasn't considered one of the most difficult contracts to move, leading up to the Kings trading for him?

I've watched closely and don't view him as a top player/contract for a contending team, which is likely why many viewed him as a negative contract. An offensive talent when comfortable, not an elite winning type of player... and no excuse for how bad his defense is

The talk for a few years was that the Bulls wanted some type of compensation and the Kings were on the hunt as we all know from the smoke the last few seasons. The Bulls will essentially be getting their own late lottery/mid first pick back and cap flexibility so great value? Nope. Certainly far from immovable however. Yeah, doubtful the Kings get a superstar package but if he can hold up for another full season that should only increase his value.

Again, Vlades issues were all development. Papa G is actually a solid player overseas but Vlade kept stacking antiquated positions.
No, Vlade's issue(s) was that he was just outright dumb. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. No other way to carve it. No other way to twist it. The dude was terrible.

Not drafting Luka and drafting Papa G were/are not considered to be "development issues", I'm sorry, but that's not gonna fly. Not with me at least. Dude was an idiot, and bringing him back will set this franchise back even more. I ain't for that.

In the last 11 months we have lost

Jordy Fernandez - Asst Head Coach
Mike Brown - Head Coach
De'Arron Fox - Best Player
Luke Louks - 2nd Assistant Coach
Wes Wilcox - Asst GM

In addition to some role players

We have added Lavine, DeRozen, Valuncunias, Laravia (who we might not be able to keep), Devin Carter

We have a fan loved, but uncertain Interim Head Coach and at least two assistant coaches who will for sure not be back next year, maybe more. And even with Vivek's claim that Monte is the best GM In the world like 2 months ago on Social Media, he may possibly be shown the door.

And thank God Dallas and Memphis exist right now, or who knows what world we would be living in!!
