Welcome to the Kings, Reggie Evans and Jason Terry

That is why I don't like the big 3 stuff. You have to win to deserve that title. It also immediately puts everyone else on a lower level.

We had a 19/20 year old who was a real talent. Averaged 20-5-5. that's what 19-20 year olds can do when they have real talent.

Now we have an OLDER player, who can't dribble or defend. Its like a taller Jimmer as a rookie.

The bigger problem with Ben is that now he can NOT develop/show anything. or at least not enough. The very best, very peak he can possibly do now in these last 28 games is show some flashes. That's it. The reason? Because we kept the IT/Gay/Cousins trio together, and IT is a great destroyer of SGs. He is a SG himself, and one who gets to control the ball and decide when he wants to shoot. Throw in Gay bookending him and Cousins who frankly should be getting MORE attention than he does from those two, and Ben has no more chance than Thornton did. Maybe 8 shots a game if we can even tolerate playing him that long. So the best he can possibly do now is have a game here, a game there, show some promise, maybe have a stretch of 3 or 4 double figure games in a row, etc. In other words, there is now no possibility for him to answer the question the front office claims it wants answered, about whether he is the guy going forward. He could at least show enough to remove the Austin Rivers/TRob washout vibe, and that would be nice. But all that would do for next year is say he should be on the roster. It wouldn't answer at all whether we can depend on him once we try to turn the corner and start winning. It wouldn't give us any guidance about whether we need to reinforce the position over the summer.

Brick you have a great critical mind, but sometimes I think you focus too much on how things can fail. You've already written the book with a bad ending in this assessment. There are other ways of looking at it where it works out for Ben. He also has plenty of time. My suggestion was give these young draftees 2-3 years...

I hope the Jet can still play some defense. If this is the case he could get minutes with the starting unit. It would be interesting to see a different kind of point guard with a line up of Cousins, Gay, Ben and JT/Reggie Evans.

My wish for the last stretch of this season is that Ben finds his shooting stroke. He shot .420 from the college 3 point line at Kansas.

The problem is: we don't have 2-3 years.

Ben may, but we don't. Clock is ticking. There is absolutely 100% no way we do not try to win next year. No way we say to Cousins okay, 2nd year together...and we want you just to wait around for another year and suck up another 50 losses, miss the All Star game, and be considered a loser so we can fart around with kids who don't know how to play. No way they punch Malone in the gut for a second year, or ask fans to just continue to be patient and keep on shelling out money as we go on 10 years out of playoff contention. In a 2-3 year development scenario by the time we knew anything about Ben, we would have had to have buried him behind capable vets who were there to support a playoff push. In essence we would have to just build a team ignoring his existence and not relying on him for anything.

Let's put it this way: so far this season Ben's per of 7.62 is ranked 385th in the NBA. Which is of course just awful. John Salmons is 364th. There is no other player in the league with a PER that bad getting as many minutes as Ben McLemore has already gotten. Nobody else below #380 even averages 20min/game. Ben averages 23.2min. Its not as if he hasn't gotten minutes thus far. And we didn't significantly change any of the team structure in which he's put up those numbers. There's almost no chance he can improve them significantly enough to even get in the top 300. Are we really going to go into a season with playoff aspirations while intentionally neutering our SG position for a second year and again starting a guy who was ranked worse than 300th in the league in PER (which doesn't even take into account the defense?). Its just very difficult to see how we or he have that time to sit around and wait for what may never happen, and just as difficult to see how we can get any affirmative answers with the way things are set up in the last 2 months.

Terry never played defense. Had he played defense, he may have been able to find a bigger paycheck as a starter somewhere. Other than a couple of years in Dallas, he has always been a sixth man.

And, he is exactly the same sort of shoot-first point guard as IT. Just older.

Weird trade. He may refuse to play. Fear not Jimmer fans.

I don't know about that. Of the many things that Terry is, I never got the impression that he was a prima donna. Now, he may want to negotiate a buyout and play for a contender, but I don't think he'll cause problems if the front office isn't willing to do that.

Brick wrote the ending to the Ben story before he stepped on the court. :) Also, he hasn't been wrong. Ben is really REALLY bad right now. I don't know what we are doing.

I strongly question shipping out two former 20 Ppg scorers in MT and Tyreke for a completely unproven rookie when we have a star ready to win now. Ben has shown nothing to justify this. I've been preaching patience, but this is sorta crazy. We just skipped patience and made him the man. And he's in a lose lose situation playing with our pg. I don't think we'll have any more of an idea of what we have after these last games that we do now. And right now, we have a rookie who shouldn't be in the league yet.

As for Jet and defense, uh, no. I think he instantly becomes our new worst defender in the guard ranks. And not to nitpick (ok, to nitpick) he's been a starter for more than half his career (650 of 1136 games). His career arc is likely to imitate our own PG. It took the first 7 years of him as a starter on bad teams before someone realized he'd be GREAT as a 6th man on a good team. And then dallas won the title. If even took Dallas a couple years to figure it out.

I don't expect Jet to play many minutes with us. It's Ray's time. A buyout seems most likely. But you never know. I got the impression from PDA Jet is not a part of the future or the present.

First let me say that no one outside the organization knows for sure what the plan here is but one posiblity was move/buy out Terry in the off season to clear up the cap space to resign/sign and trade IT. Personally I pray for a sign and trade. The fact that this trade included Evans shows that Malone's desire for defense is finely being heard upstairs. Maybe they will hear his desire to move the ball.

Well we shipped out Tyreke mainly because of the offer NO threw at him most people will agree he is not worth that much and MT stunk up the joint plain and simple. Yes Ben is struggling in his rookie campaign but remember he red shirted at KU so don't be to surprised he is struggling in the pro's so practice what you preach:). As i pointed out yesterday Malone prefers IT off the bench because he gave the starting nod to Vasquez. The rest is still unwritten.

Except that Evans isn't a very good defender. He is a very good rebounder and can hack a Dwight as good as any of them, but his shot blocking, man defense, and positional defense are all bad to nonexistent. He is the less athletic version of Faried.

Hadlowe, admittedly Evans is no defensive powerhouse BUT he prevents second chance points and WILL man up with anyone in the league. In short he upgrades our defense from where it was with MT on board, and brings more energy and size to the PF position. He will/should never start but for less than 2 mill a year he brings hard nose play (thuggery) for 10 or so min a game.

Maybe there isn't a market for IT after all: most teams believe he will get under/exactly MLE, and Kings will have hard time to retain him due to LT concerns, so few teams, that wanted him, saw no reason to throw away assets. Mike James got MLE from the Wolves too...And giving up IT for 2nd rounder wasn't worth it, if you can retain IT for $5-6 million and make him 6th man.

Brooklyn had 5 players with big negative in +/- this season. Nets sent 2 of those to the Bulls earlier in the season, but at least Taylor and Shengelia have some potential, plus cost nothing. Kings received another pair of those, and these two cost $7.5 million. It was a dump move, nothing more, Kings save $1.7 million, including $950,000 next year. Don't expect more than 15 minutes combined out of Nets duo: they are here to collect checks and hopefully provide some veteran guidance.

So on IT the Kings have to put a qualifying offer of $200,000 to start his restricted free agency. Then can offer to match any deal he gets, correct?

Shamsports has the qualifying offer as a little over 1.1 million. And then, yes they can match any offer.

"@Jim Crandell

A lot of us thought Jason Terry wouldn't play here..tonight we learn he will rehab his knee in Dallas for the rest of the season."

So there's that.

Maybe he can do some teleconferences to inspire the troops?

I heard Miami. Not Dallas.

It seems like he won't be playing here.

If you had buyout in your office pool, it's looking good. If you had solid veteran presence, better luck next time. :)

So, these two trades, just about saving money? Or is Reggie evans the missing piece of the puzzle? How much would we save in a buyout?

He hasn't been the same since Lebron killed him with that vicious dunk anyway.image.jpg

I don't think Evans is the missing piece of anything. Maybe he gets playtime, but I would be disappointed if he started taking Acy's minutes.

I had both, so I wasn't gonna lose anyway. :D
P.S. 2Hadlowe: we understood you the first time.:p

He's three times the rebounder Acy is, wouldn't surprise me at all. Both guys are of a style to inspire Cuz, but unfortunately as nifty as that style is, you really can't afford to have more than one of them on the floor atone time.

The guard situation is mostly unchanged. It's slightly worse minus MT, as sad as that is. At least he had pro experience and once could play.

So we were the worst. Now, more worse. It's hard to go any lower than two rookies and outlaw plus little man.

I just want effort these final games. Wins would be nice BUT....

I'm more worried about our big 2.

I think it's more about breaking up the 8mil MT contract. 5.5 and 1.7 deals are much easier to move around, buyout, etc.

Also, it's truly an "all-in" for Ben. He's the last SG standing and should be seeing 30+ MPG. Time to see if he can step up

After reading today's Bee article I have a new appreciation for Evans. Even if he is past his prime and the 6th pf we have it appears he doesn't mind coming here and serving sort of a mentor role. Cuz and IT appear to like him already
