DETROIT, Michigan, July 13, 2005 – Current NBA Philadelphia 76er Chris Webber challenged retired NBA player Charles Barkley to a $50,000 charity donation based on which of the two performs better during this week’s American Century Celebrity Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada. The celebrity golf tournament will take place at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course this Thursday, July 14-Sunday, July 17.

In a teleconference on Thursday, July 7, 2005, Barkley was questioned about the odds listing him at 500-1 for winning the title while Chris Webber was listed at 100-1. Barkley responded by stating "That's embarrassing. That man shot 130.” In the 2002, Webber was dead last at 74th place with a score of 407 (143-122-142) in three rounds and holds the records of high single-round and three-round scores for the tournament’s 16 year history. Barkley placed 69th and scored a total of 294 (108-94-92) in three rounds in 2002 and most recently a 76th place in 2004. "I thank god Chris Webber is going to be here this year. If I get beat by C. Webb, I really have to give this game up. If I can beat C. Webb…that's my goal for this trip" Barkley stated.

Upon learning about Barkley’s remarks, Webber personally called and challenged him to more than just bragging rights for the winner. Whoever between Barkley and Webber has the better golf score at the conclusion of the tournament, will receive a $50,000 contribution donated in their name to their foundation by the loser. Webber founded The Chris Webber Foundation in 1993 to support youth through literacy awareness and donations in his hometown of Detroit. Barkley founded the Charles Barkley Foundation to support a variety of children’s education causes. By Sunday, one of these foundations will have $50,000 in additional funds to continue making a difference in the community.

"If Charles Barkley quits playing golf by losing to me, then people should pay me to win this challenge. I bet I could collect $10 even $20 a person towards my foundation from each person who wants to see the end of Charles' golf career. I can help put millions of people out of their misery from having to watch his golf swing. We all loved him as a basketball player and tolerate him as a broadcaster, but who really wants to watch Chuck hit a golf ball?"

More than 78 sports and entertainment celebrities are expected at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship. The total purse is $500,000 with the overall first place winner receiving $100,000. A portion of the tournament proceeds also benefit multiple charities. For more information including the televised schedule on Golf Channel and NBC, log on to www.tahoecelebritygolf.com.

I should give Chris some lessons to help him demolish Barkley. Chris needs some work on the flatstick.

I could have two rounds in with the same score to Webber's one round.

I have absolutely no interest in golf, but I would pay money to see Chris beat Barkley in a golf match. Chris had a beautiful quote.

Amen, brother Webber.

Only way I can even get to the first hole is if I distract everyone, pick up the ball and throw it while they're not looking. Otherwise, I could probably reach Chris' score before hitting the first green.

c-webb should have said "if I win, Charles Barkley has to give 5 compliments to the Kings per broadcast." Then I would donate money too.
