Kevin Martin playing Santa
Native NBA player provides gifts for local foster child

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Kevin Martin is a little too tall and skinny to be confused with Santa Claus, but he sure stages a quality impersonation.
Knowing there were children in his hometown that will face the possibilities of not having a Christmas this year, the first-round draft choice of the NBA's Sacramento Kings decided to do something about it.
A Zanesville native, Martin provided gifts for a local foster child through the Adopt a Child program for Muskingum County Children Services. The child's identity could not be released due to confidentiality laws, but Martin said he preferred a boy between the ages of 8 and 10. Children Services picked up the gifts and delivered them last week, Martin said.
"I just feel like you always remember where you come from," Martin said from his home in Sacramento. "For me to be blessed with everything I have, to be able to share it at a special time like this means a lot to me. I feel like everyone living how I'm living should share it with those who are unfortunate."
Martin, girlfriend Holly Anderson and close friend Brody Beauford did most of the shopping after Martin came home with his mother following a recent Kings road game in Indiana. His mother, Marilyn Martin, helped finish the shopping after Kevin returned to Sacramento, and delivered the gifts in bags to Children Services.
"He called me and said he wanted to do something to help, and I made some phone calls," Marilyn Martin said. "Kevin has always had a big heart. He wanted to do his part."
Martin signed a three-year contract worth nearly $3 million shortly after being drafted in the summer.
"I think that it's a wonderful thing that he hasn't forgotten about the needy children out there, especially in his hometown," said Dave Boyer of Children Services. "I think it says a lot about the kind of person he is and the kind of heart that he has. The fact that with his hectic schedule, with him being right in the middle of his season and everything, that he can take time to go out and buy gifts and still take part in the Adopt a Child program is great."
Boyer said the news of Martin buying the gifts spread around the agency rather swiftly.
"Everybody knows who Kevin Martin is now," Boyer said. "I didn't see the gifts personally, but I know it was a huge amount. There were a bunch of sacks."
Kevin said he and his helpers spent most of their time at KB Toys in Colony Square Mall. He then called his mother. "I let mom take care of the clothes. I'm not real good at that kind of stuff," Martin joked. "I just told her to shop like she would for me and Jonathan (Martin's younger brother). She shopped until she dropped."

That just goes to show that "SPECIAL K" may, in fact, be the perfect nickname for Kevin. And I know why he's fitting in so well with the rest of the Kings.
WTG, Kevin...
