Vote Tyreke Evans for the Skills Challenge!

tyreke will breeze through the ball handling and layup part easy

till we get to the jumpshot part of the skills challenge :o

a) that thing is really a joke

b) think Reke was already going to pass on the frosh/soph game to est the ankle, so nto sure why he'd fly out to do some doofy drills

c) and really does not play to his strengths the way it does to a Steve Nash type

so while I appreciate your call for everybody to get Reke into the challenge, if it doesn't happen I am not going to be too upset about it

A skills challenge isn't going to strain his ankle. Whether he should do it or not is another question, but let's not use the ankle as an excuse to dribble a ball in a cirlce and pass it through a hoop.

I agree this does not play to Tyreke's strength. There is not a test where the player bulls his way through several players in the paint to score at the bucket.

But if there was..................:)

I think Tyreke will knock down the fake defenders if he's going at anywhere near the speed required to win the competition because of his size. Tyreke's ability to get around guys has more to do with his fakes and change of speeds than it does sheer quickness. Unfortunately, he can fake one way but them obstacles aren't going to move.

My bets are on Wall or Rose.

Leaving home is the strain to the ankle. there is a vast gulf between taking 4 days off to R&R, and flying to a city, doing the PR rounds, showing up to all kinds of games and parties, doing some goofy skills thing, then flying back. Vast gulf. Somehow I doubt he rookie/soph thing was really going to p[ut some immense staing his ankle either -- maybe 20min of PT in an exhibiton match? But losing the full break of recuperation however might actually matter.

Via Jason Jones article...

Evans likely will be selected for the Rookie-Sophomore game. Evans was the game's MVP as a rookie last year.

Evans had indicated he might skip the game if the plantar fasciitis in his left foot was bothering him.

"Hopefully I'll be selected to play in the game," Evans said. "If I get a chance I'm definitely going to try to go out there."

Evans likely would play against rookie teammate DeMarcus Cousins, who would be on the rookie team.

I think the injury is getting better as we've seen in his improved quickness recently. Of course if his foot is really hurting then he shouldn't play. But if it feels ok, he should participate in the All-Star activities as it will motivate him to get better and get to the big boys game next year. Being around that environment with the elites of the game will make him hungrier.

I voted 10 times last night and plan on continuing.

Do you truly believe he is a top 4 out of those candidates? Because if not, it's voting like this that gives us Yao Ming, TMac and Allen Iverson as starters.

This isn't the All-Star game, this is just an event -- and one of the sillier ones. There's no merit involved, no top 4 -- just who the fans want to see the most. Considering we never get any of our players in any of these events, I would like seeing Reke compete against Chris Paul, John Wall, Derek Rose, and whoever else. Especially if he's going for the Rookie/Sophmore game anyway. I'd vote for Omri in the three point shootout too if they gave us the chance.

i wouldn't mind having tyreke get selected because he'll get to be around the stars in the NBA. Maybe he'll become really good friends with some and recruit them for our team :)

Fair enough, but the same could be said about the all star game. I'm just not much of a fan for these gimmicks. We were regulars @ all star weekend when we were @ the top. I feel that if you win, the rest will come. That's just me.

I believe he WILL be the BEST out of those when its said and done.

Bold words. I hope you are right, but currently the mindset and determination of Rose/Westbrook is far greater than what we see from Tyreke. At this stage, when you're dealing with these kinds of talents, it's all mental. How much do you want it? How much work will you put in? How real will you be with yourself in assessment of weaknesses? What are you willing to give up to be the best?

uh.....Omri was selected for the Shootout competition last year.

Yeah but I'm not sure the Horse competition actually counts.
Nevertheless, that's what the league calls the "shootout." And it was boring. And poor Omri. I think he even said he'd never played Horse. Apparently spent his practice time working on shots he might actually get in a real game, rather than trick shots. ;)

Its separate from the 3-point shootout.

I agree for the most part. Though from what we were shown, Tyreke worked extremely hard this summer. He does have the determination. The problem was he worked out according to the plans and schedules of his brother and Lamont Peterson. Both do not qualify as people who knows best for Tyreke basketball wise. I know he worked out with actual known coaches, but the plans and schedules were made by his bros and Lamont. I'm surprise none of these people pointed out that he needed to stop fading on his jumpshots as part of his shooting training. Seems like they are too worried about being in LA and living their lives as rapper/celebrity to do a good job with Tyreke.

Is Omri gonna make the sophomore team?

I suppose it's possible. The squads are nine-men teams, but I don't think there have been any really stellar wing players in the sophomore class - lots of PGs. There are Casspi and Reggie Williams, and then I think you have to dig down to Chase Budinger, who isn't a likely selection at this point. Wes Matthews, DeMar DeRozan and James Harden could sneak in to occupy a wing slot, though. I'd figure that Serge Ibaka, Taj Gibson, and DeJuan Blair are the big-man candidates. Then, there's a long list of PGs - Evans, Curry, Collison, Holiday, Lawson.

For a first pass, I'll say the team is:
Curry
Holiday
Evans (might pass, would go to Lawson?)
Matthews
Harden
DeRozan
Ibaka
Gibson
Blair

And Casspi is the first man out.

I think the Rookie team might be an easier call at this point. I'll go with:
Wall
Bledsoe
Turner
Wes Johnson
Fields
Griffin
Favors
Monroe
Cousins

Gary Neal is making a case, but I'm not sure anybody else is. Perhaps Ed Davis if he goes on a hot streak.

Hmm, yeah and if Tyreke and Cousins are both there that won't help his case.

And here's the actual results: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/basketball/nba/02/01/rookie.challenge.ap/index.html?xid=si_nba

Neal did make it instead of Turner on the rookie squad, and they gave the nod to newly-healthy Brandon Jennings over James Harden on the Sophomore squad, but it looks like I was 16 for 18! Sorry, Omri!

What? How can you tell the mindset/determination of Rose/Westbrook is better than Tyreke? Both Rose and Westbrook struggled their 2nd year, especially the first half. Tyreke worked out with both of them for a large part of the summer. He has the same trainer, and was in the same damn workouts as Rose/Westbrook. All 3 struggled the first half of their soph season. Rose/Westbrook have had another season, and offseason to work on their games. How about comparing Tyreke at this time enxt year to where Rose/Westbrook are currently? That would be logical.

What the...? How could you think Tyreke had any chance of not making the team? Not even considering the fact that he was the rookie of the year and rookie-soph game MVP last season, he is still easily playing better than anyone else who could possibly knock him out and is most likely still the best player of the sophs.
