Well, another ex-Monarch recently got a coaching gig!

Continuing my project of reporting any updates on former Monarchs players, this morning I offer you this story about La'Keshia Frett.

Frett was first drafted by the L.A. Sparks in '99 and played with them during the 1999 and 2000 seasons. After the 2000 season, the Sparks traded her to the Monarchs in exchange for Latasha Byears. Frett played for the M's from '01 to '03. In 2004, the Monarchs traded her to the Charlotte Sting in exchange for a 2005 third-round draft pick. Frett played 10 games for the Sting in '04 until she was waived in midseason, and was picked up by the New York Liberty. She played for the Liberty for the remainder of '04 and throughout the entire 2005 season.

According to the WNBA website, La'Keshia is an unrestricted free agent after the '05 season. I don't know whether she has officially filed retirement papers with the WNBA. But at least this coaching gig will give her something to do until next year arrives.

Anyway, read and enjoy! :)

LA'KESHIA FRETT NAMED ASSISTANT COACH AT GEORGIA

Former Lady Bulldog returns to alma mater on Landers' staff

Oct. 12, 2005

Athens, Ga. -- La'Keshia Frett, a four-time All-SEC performer for Georgia from 1994-97 and a current player for the WNBA's New York Liberty, has joined the Lady Bulldog Basketball staff as an assistant coach, head coach Andy Landers announced on Wednesday.

"I'm excited to have someone with the experience and the quality of Keshia Frett on our staff," Landers said. "Her experience as a player here and at the professional level will be a valuable addition to our efforts."

Frett replaces Tina Langley, who resigned for personal reasons.

"We're losing a good one and we're getting a good one," Landers said.

Frett was the 1994 SEC Freshman of the Year and was named All-SEC by league coaches each of her four years in Athens. She helped lead Georgia to a combined 98-27 (.784) record from 1993-97, including Lady Dog teams which finished as NCAA runner-up in 1996, also reached the 1995 Final Four and won the 1996 and 1997 SEC Championships.

"I'm excited about the opportunity to come back to Athens after playing at Georgia," Frett said. "I'm looking forward to working with Coach Landers and getting the chance to work with the girls."

After completing her collegiate career, Frett was a first-round draft pick in the ABL, where she played two seasons for the Philadelphia Rage. Frett then was drafted by the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. Over the past seven summers, she has played for the Sparks (1999-2000), the Sacramento Monarchs (2001-03), the Charlotte Sting (2004) and the Liberty (2004-05). Frett was the 1993 National Prep Player of the Year at Phoebus High School in Hampton, Va., and was part of one of the most celebrated recruiting classes in women's basketball history. Frett and her classmates Kedra Holland-Corn and Tracy Henderson went on to become three of the top-15 overall picks in the 1997 ABL Draft.

The 2005-06 Lady Bulldogs will return four starters and four more letterwinners from last year's squad which finished 24-10 and advanced to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Tournament. In addition, Ebony Felder -- a three-year letterwinner from 2002-04 -- was recently granted a sixth year to complete her collegiate eligibility by the NCAA. Georgia also will welcome a group of talented newcomers which includes: 6-5 Angel Robinson, a consensus first-team prep All-American; 6-6 Reicina Russell, a sophomore transfer who was a Freshman All-Big Ten performer for Penn State in 2003-04; and Danielle Taylor, the MVP of the 2005 Georgia North/South All-Star game.
During Landers' 26-season tenure, Georgia has compiled one of the most impressive competitive resumes in women's college basketball. Landers' average of 24.4 wins each season ranks second among all Division I coaches with as much tenure, and he enters this season 16 wins shy of his 650th victory at Georgia. The Lady Dogs have appeared in 22 of 24 NCAA Tournaments and are one of only six teams to reach the Final Four five times, doing so in 1983, '85, '95, '96 and '99. UGA's tallies of NCAA Tourney games played (65) and won (43) both rank fourth nationally. The Lady Bulldogs also have claimed seven Southeastern Conference Championships (1983, '84, '86, '91, '96, '97 and 2000) and have won four SEC Tournaments (1983, '84, '86 and 2001). Georgia has been a leader in supplying talent to the WNBA as well. All told, 16 former Lady Bulldogs have gone on to play in the league, the second-most of any school in the nation, including three-time WNBA All-Star Deanna "Tweety" Nolan of the Detroit Shock.

Steven, I really appreciate the research you do and, of course, your sharing the info with us.

Frett was always a favorite...not so much for her ability on the court, but she seems to be a truly nice person. And, I loved meeting her mother about 3 yrs ago. She is a jewel. I got to say hello to her mom when the Liberty came to town this year. She seemed genuinely pleased to see me.
