Turn out the lights...

As Don Meredith used to sing at the end of Monday Night Football, "Turn out the lights, the party's over..."

What a year...

I sat on my couch, with my chilled Corona, and I watched what would end up being the final game of the 2004-2005 series. I cheered, I groaned, I yelled with delight, and - at the end - I even shed a tear.

But you know what? I am not sad.

I LOVE THIS TEAM!

They have given me more joy over the years than should be allowed for one middle-aged short fat lady to get from a silly game. Look at this season. I don't know about anyone else, but there are some things I'll never forget:

• Webber coming back from what could so easily have been a career ending injury and playing with the heart of a true warrior.

• Doug, with feet so sore he could hardly walk, going out and giving his all every minute he was on the court and yelling for his teammates when he was on the bench.

• Matt - SacTownsFinest - seeing his childhood dream come true. When he stepped on the court at Arco for the first time and heard the roar of the crowd, I cried tears of joy.

• Vlade, in a Laker uniform, standing midcourt and, for just a moment, reminding me of what used to be. Laughing and joking, Vlade too brought tears to my eyes.

• Webber, stepping onto the court wearing #4 but for the Philadelphia 76ers. He, too, as with the others before him, accepted the expressions of gratitude from the Arco faithful with humility and a touch of embarrassment.

• Bibby, put into a role he clearly didn't relish, stepping up and carrying this team time after time after time. Taking that shot when it seemed all was lost, and bringing us to the edge of our chairs ...again and again.

The highs and the lows. The injuries and the comebacks. The youth and the old veterans.

I LOVE KINGSFANS.COM

When I needed a way to express my feelings for this team, I could always come here. When I needed a lift after a bad day, this was the first place I thought of coming. When I desparately wanted to believe everything would be all right, all I had to do was sign in here and I was among friends and kindred spirits.

We have a truly special community here. Our members range from young fans just beginning what I hope will be a lifelong love affair with basketball and the Sacramento Kings to really old fans who have been with the team since the beginning and even some who were fans before the Kings took that planeride West. We have members whose knowledge of this game is astounding. We have members who are just beginning to learn. We have a wide variety of races, colors and creeds and we all seem to be able to get along. We have men and women, boys and girls. I am so very proud and grateful that Jeremy allows me to be a part of the staff of this website because I get to deal with people I would never have met otherwise.

It is now the beginning of the off-season.

We'll have a lot to talk about...and even more to look forward to.

Geoff Petrie put that first elite team together - I have every faith he'll be able to do it again.

I'll be here - and I hope all of you will be, too.

I am Kings fan! Hear me roar!!!

GO KINGS!!!!!

EDIT: And let's get ready for 2006!

Great post VF!

I look forward to an exciting off-season, for once, and know that Geoff will pull some major steals, and we'll be a great team again, in the very near future!

GO KINGS!

nice post!! i know i will be here all off season. i want to thank all the players that played for the kings this year. thanks to the coaches and owners. it's been a crazy year. lots of great memories and some sad ones as well. i'm really looking foward to next season.

THANKS KINGS!!!!

VF-- your posts always make me cry!!:o Seriously, you have a way with words that we all appreciate.

Thanks for a look back at some of the most memorable moments of this year. It has been a wild one, and an emotional one.

I too, am very grateful for this forum. I am a HUGE Kings fan, but only found this forum after the playoffs lost year when I was heartbroken and looking for answers. It took me even more time to join and to dare to actually enter a post. This is truely an amazing place to hang out. My husband is a Kings fan, as is most of my family, but none of them truely have the level of passion (or obsession??) that I do.

When Vlade went to the Lakers? I was upset and disappointed, and could read about the pros and cons until I felt better. When the Christie trade went down, I was shaken, and I came here to share my feelings and to emphasize with others who were just as shaken as I was. And when Webber was traded, I got to sit here at my computer sobbing, and commiserate with many who felt the same way.

Everyone here doesn't have the same opinion, and sometimes people disagree. Sometimes things even get heated. But above it all, these people are "FANS" in capital letters, fans who live and breath this team, not "fans" who turn on the TV a few times a year if it's convenient. Thanks for a GREAT forum, and thanks to the Kings for a great year.

Thanks VF!! Perfect post for the final game! Pixelpusher, I too wish I knew about this site earlier! Thanks to everyone for sharing your thoughts and comments. It is great to be able to come here and be surrounded by fellow kings' fans since I there aren't many around my "neck of the woods!" I LOVE OUR TEAM!

Props to the Kings and ESPCIALY rick Adelman for, making the best of a bad situation and rolling with the punches all season long. Honeslty given the personal changes and injuries this team beat the odds by even making the play offs. The team had plaenty of problems in the play offs (and before) but they reallly showed charater. And now I can have one less thing to worry about.

Awesome Post Vf21....

To describe this season in written word, let alone one, would be quite the task. It hasn't been the most memorable, but it was what it was--and another Chapter in the book that Petrie wrote.

The highs were incredible and the lows were....well low and made me cry like a baby and curse like a sailor but such is the ebb and flow of a sports franchise. I do look towards the offseason as I am curious to see Petrie try to reconstruct the team.

It was fun, Kingsfans.com is great, Mike Bibby is still a darned good basketball player, we got to say goodbye to two of the greatest players to wear a Kings uni....and next thing you know October is right around the corner.

Here's to the Kings, 20 more seasons IN SACRAMENTO & to Kingsfans.com

VF, I'm a newbie but was compelled to tell you that I think your post is great!! I'm a big Kings fan and enjoy reading all the posts. Sometimes I'm intimidated putting my posts out there because everyone knows so much about the game and the Kings. I just enjoy having a place that I can share my love of the team. Thanks everyone and thank you Kings for a great season!!

Looking forward to next year!!! I can't wait already.:)

Good stuff VF21!

I still can't believe the season is finally over as of 05/03/05.

Kings will come back with a vengeance once OCT 05 comes around.

It's gonna be one crazy off season.

Great post VF1! Thank you to all responsible for KingsFan.com. I'm glad I joined. This was a bittersweet year, but what wonderful memories we have. And I say a rousing hear, hear for the next 20 years of Sacramento Kings basketball.

:D I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!:D

I think this year will be a year we will ALL remember for a very long time...I feel ( emotionally) like I've gone 200 rounds in the ring with a prizefighter and I'm excited about looking to the future and seeing what's to come in the offseason.
Great post VF...I agree wholeheartedly...I LOVE THIS TEAM!!!!

I wish I'd known about Kingsfans.com earlier. I'm happy to be on board.

I'll like to fourth that comment!

I am glad at whomever it was that told me to come here. Not sure if he's a poster amongst these boards. You guys are great. And it helps me not only appreciate just the Kings more, but the whole league. All of the insightful outloook of the NBA helps braoden my appreciation. Thank you Kings, thank you NBA, and a special thank you Kingsfans.

I'll be here often during the rest of the play-off, the off season, and following into a very anticipated next season.

VF *** thank you sooooooo much for the post. It made me feel better about the whole early playoff exit. I was sad last night, but not really disappointed - I was proud of the guys because I really felt like they gave it all. This season was hard on the team, the staff, and US-the fans. There have been so many changes and personally I think they did very well considering that 70% of this team is new. The NEW Kings have really grown on me and I can hardly wait for the beginning of the next season!

The Prodigal King's

and their fans !!!

I'll be here next year ....

Same hopes - same dreams - same goals

I'm not that easy to ge rid of ...

Thanks so much for the morale booster VF21!!!!!! You always know how to make us feel better!

A couple nights ago on the local news they were interviewing Kings fans on their enthusiasm and passion for the team and one idiot guy said that he was going to cease his fandom until the Kings got better. I'm so glad that on this forum, we are here for the Kings through thick and thin. No matter what, we always have hope and if it takes the Kings years to win a championship, myself and all others on here will patiently wait!! I love this team under all circumstances!!
