Travis Outlaw

hollinger of espn tweeted the deal is 3 million total for 4 years, so 750k per year with NJ picking up the other 25 million left on his deal. Any way you slice that, it is a sweet deal

Its 4 years at 3m each year. Awful move from a directionless franchise.

I've heard mixed reads on Outlaw's defense, so don't get your hopes too high. It could be that the Kings acquired two forwards (Salmons and Outlaw) who hit their peak and are regressing.

Ugh. Nothing but lateral-move type signings this entire off-season. Great job once again, Petrie.

The thing is, though it may be a lateral move, it's on a great contract. The nets thought enough of him to sign him for 7mil last year. He isn't worth 7 mil, but he's definitely worth more than 3 mil. We're paying an athletic 6'9 SF with 8 years of experience less than we're paying JT who is still on his rookie contract, and if he turns out to be a good piece for us, we have him locked up for the next 4 years.

If I recall we're not allowed to trade Outlaw this year, but we can trade him starting next season, so if nothing else, he's going to be a great asset that we can use down the line.

Also, I just saw Hollinger's tweet, and he's an idiot in this case. I wouldn't touch Baron Davis even at the minimum. There is a reason that he cleared waivers and I'm not in the least upset that we passed on him. Outlaw, on the other hand, is coming at a fantastic value.

One other thing I want to mention is that I'd understand concern if this move was going to bump one of our young budding players down the depth-chart. But this isn't the same situation as bringing on a Crawford (who might have taken minutes away from Thornton). Outlaw might take away minutes from Donte/Honeycutt, but I don't know if either of them were going to get many minutes this season anyway.

So which is it boys?

Not a chance in hell is he a PF. He's played the SF position his entire career, and very few, if any, PF skills. Plus he's a little on the light side for the position. He's certainly fallen from grace since leaving Portland, but was highly thought of once. Maybe Petrie see's something in him that others don't. He has the look of a good defensive player with his length, but its never really translated to the court for some reason. I wonder if there's a trade in the works. At least we have quanity, if not quality at the SF position. Now all we need is to sign Kirilenko, and we can start 5 SF's....

let's be real here. he doesn't have skill at any position.

Is he tradable? If he is, is itvatbthe 3MM per year, or what the nets owe him?

I really don't know how this amnesty thing works.

He cannot be traded this season but after this season he can be traded.

He signed 5 year, $35 million deal with the Nets last off-season, an average of $7million per season. So he is owed some $28 million over the next 4 years. He will get his money.

Because the Nets amnestied him, we could bid on his contract before he clears waivers. We bid $12 million on that contract so we have him over the next 4 years and he is getting $3million per season from us for the duration of his contract (unless we trade him after this season). The Nets then pay the remainder of his contract (which is $16 million over the next 4 years). If we trade him, we are trading his $3 million per season contract so the team that takes him on will pay him $3million per seasons and the Nets are on the hook for the rest of the contract (but its outside the salary cap)

Does that clear it up?!

So either way (trading him or not), The Nets are paying the rest of his contract (minus the part that'd be filled with our 3mil/4yr contract)?

His stats except against the Kings are average to below average except for free throws. I hope he brings that "vet experience" our team needs. In any case, for the cost, it's worth a shot. I wonder if this means we have given up on Daly. If so, this is one very weak free agent period from owners who said they would spend. Not a new observation, of course, but very disappointing. This pick up excites me as much as having Donte Green on the team.

Yes. Thank you. In that case, this is a great deal.
