Kings had significant cap space this offseason with limited competition and ended up Bjelica & Ferrell. Let's face it, we can have all of the cap space in the world but it doesn't mean it's going to translate into significant signings. It's already hard enough to lure free agents to Sacramento. Trying to do it when we are a low level team makes it next to impossible. Not to mention the 2019 offseason will have A LOT more competition.

With that in mind, why not cash in on that cap space now while setting ourselves up for cap space in the 2020 offseason. I'm not confident that we are going to look like such a promising team a the end of this year that we are going to look attractive to a good/great player, but after two more years, we may start to look like a team that can do some damage.

The below trades are an effort to use that said cap space to help set us up for the 2020 offseason while accumulating even more assets to build this team going forward.

--------------------------

TRADE #1
SAC Gets: Ian Mahinmi & 2019 1st WAS (top 12 protected)
SAC Gives: Kosta Koufos & Ben McLemore
Why for SAC? Take on a longer term, bad contract for a future 1st round pick. Mahinmi's contract expires in time for the 2020 offseason.

WAS Gets: Kosta Koufos & Ben McLemore
WAS Gives: Ian Mahinmi & 2019 1st WAS (top 12 protected)
Why for WAS? With Wall, Beal, & Porter having massive contracts, shedding Mahinmi will help their tax bill down the road. They also get Koufos is a better, cheaper replacement for Mahinmi.

--------------------------

TRADE #2
SAC Gets: 2019 1st LAL (top 12 protected), 2021 1st LAL (lottery protected), 2021 2nd LAL, Isaac Bonga, & Luol Deng
SAC Gives: Willie Cauley-Stein & Zach Randolph
Why for SAC? They take on a bad contract for future assets to help with their core down the road. Deng's contract expires in time for the 2020 offseason.

LAL Gets: Willie Cauley-Stein & Zach Randolph
LAL Gives: 2019 LAL 1st (top 12 protected), 2021 LAL 2nd, Isaac Bonga, & Luol Deng
Why for LAL? The trade sheds Deng's contract for next offseason to increase the amount of cap space they have to work with. They also get Cauley-Stein to be a lob threat with LeBron, Ball, & Rondo feeding him on a regular basis.

--------------------------

TRADE #3 (DEADLINE DEAL)
SAC Gets: 2020 (or 2021 depending on the pick owed to BOS) LAC 1st (top 10 protected), 2021 OKC 2nd, 2022 OKC 2nd, 2022 LAC 2nd, & Danilo Gallinari
SAC Gives: Iman Shumpert, Yogi Ferrell, & Deyonta Davis
Why for SAC? They take on a bad contract for some future assets to help with their core down the road. Gallinari's contract expires in time for the 2020 offseason.

OKC Gets: Deyonta Davis
OKC Gives: 2021 2nd OKC, 2022 2nd OKC, Alex Abrines, & Kyle Singler
Why for OKC? They help their tax situation more by shedding another $9 mil while still having players who can fill the void at wing (George, Roberson, Grant, Ferguson, Luwawu).

LAC Gets: Iman Shumpert & Yogi Ferrell
LAC Gives: 2020 (or 2021 depending on the pick owed to BOS) LAC 1st (top 10 protected), 2022 LAC 2nd, & Danilo Gallinari
Why for LAC? This trade gives them massive cap space next year to try and bring in a couple of stars.

KINGS 2018-19 ROSTER:
PG - Fox / Mason
SG - Bogdanovic / Hield
SF - Gallinari / Jackson / Bonga
PF - Bagley / Bjelica / Labissiere / Deng
C - Giles / Mahinmi

2019 DRAFT PICKS

2019 2nd SAC/MIL (least favorable)
2019 2nd CLE/HOU/ORL (2nd least favorable)
2019 2nd LAL/MIN (most favorable)

2020 DRAFT PICKS
2020 1st SAC
2020 1st LAC (top 10 protected)
2020 2nd SAC
2020 2nd MIA
2020 2nd DET

2021 DRAFT PICKS
2021 1st SAC
2021 1st LAL (lottery protected)
2021 2nd SAC
2021 2nd MEM
2021 2nd OKC
2021 2nd LAL

2022 DRAFT PICKS
2022 1st SAC
2022 2nd SAC
2022 2nd OKC
2022 2nd LAC

2020 OFFSEASON
After declining Bjelica's option for the 2020-21 season and after factoring in the cap holds for Bogdanovic (RFA), Hield (RFA), Labissiere (RFA), Mason (RFA), 2019 1st WAS, 2019 1st LAL, 2020 1st SAC, & 2020 1st LAC, the Kings would ~$38 mil in cap space with the following roster under contract:

PG - Fox / Mason
SG - Bogdanovic / Hield
SF - Jackson / Bonga
PF - Bagley / Labissiere
C - Giles
*2019 1st WAS
*2019 1st LAL
*2020 1st SAC
*2020 1st LAC

We would also have three 2nd round picks in 2019 and three 2nd round picks in 2020 that can be used for draft and stashes or to be used to trade up.

I would like to see us make a move for a good player (or two) that has fallen out of favor rather than more mid-to-late lotto picks. They are crapshoots. Yes there is always one or two guys that gets drafted 10 spots too late and makes the GMs ahead look like fools. I don't trust our FO to find them - I'd also note that sometimes these players are helped immeasurably by landing on a winning team win zero pressure.
