Trade

I really don't see Marcus Thornton fitting in with this team. He can score but does so at such an awful rate. Not to mention he plays little to no defense. I was looking at trade scenarios on other teams forums like the Jazz, Bulls and Cavs who all need a shooter. Fans want absolutely nothing to do with him, rightfully so. They realize what he is..a chucker. He could be great in a 6th man role, but its highly doubtful hes going go from 36mpg to the bench with the same team.

Let Jason Thompson, Donte Green walk, Amnesty Salmons

Draft Thomas Robinson

At first I was dreaming scenarios for a Varejo, or Taj Gibson swap but I got backlash like I was crazy, and probably rightfully so. He really isn't valued as high around the league. I hate when people bring up the fact "Hes our leading scorer." Yea hes a leading scorer of an awful team who brings nothing else to the table. Basically a downgraded Kevin Martin.

Trade Marcus Thornton to the Timberwolves for Wesley Johnson and Wayne Ellington
Timberwolves wouldn't turn this down, as he would fit perfect next to Rubio. Him and Love would make for a terrorizing combo beyond the Arc.

Wesley Johnson has talent, but also needs a change of scenery. He showed flashes of potential his rookie year but has been struggling for minutes with Beasley, Derrick Williams and Martell Webster playing his position. Hes a decent athletic option to have off the bench and has a good jump shot.
Wayne Ellington isn't going to be Thornton, but he provides consistent 3 point range which can spell Tyreke for 10-15 mins per game.

Trade Jimmer, Honeycutt and the 34th pick to the Hornets for Jason Smith and Grievis Vasquez.

Hornets do this in a heartbeat. They get Jimmer to pair with 2 lottery picks to help try and sell tickets. Smith puts up 10 points in 24 mins and can be a great bench option to stretch the floor. Vasquez 9ppg,2.6rebs, 5 assists is a high motor guy who would form a okay point guard rotation with I.T. He hustles, plays with unmatched intensity and puts in effort on the defensive end.

C. DeMarcus Cousins/Jason Smith/Whiteside
F. Thomas Robinson/Chuck Hayes
F. Terrence Williams/Wesley Johnson
G. Tyreke Evans/Wayne Ellington/Garcia
G. Isaiah Thomas/Greivis Vasquez

Whatever you think of Thornton he's worth a lot more than two scrubs.
Effort put by Vasquez on the defensive end would evaporate by the end of the training camp and then you have two scrubs again. Yes, you suggest for Kings to give up spare pats as well but out of 5 assets in your second trade 34th pick might just happen to be most valueble one. Jimmer has to go though because this team won't be a good defensive team to mask his deficiencies so that he could stay on the court at least until Smart is gone or has changed his views so by the end of the next season Jimmer will hardly be worth the 60th pick.

I think Jimmer for Vasquez and Smith is perfect to get him off our hands. If Utah wins out and makes the playoffs the Timberwolves keep their draft pick. If we can get their first and a throw in I think thats fair value for Thornton

Downgraded Kevin Martin? Lol, pass me some of THAT!!! You are way undervaluing Thornton homie.

Um..Marcus Thornton may or may not fit, but he's worth a dozen Wayne Ellington's. He's a legit 20pt scorer in this league, and I have no idea what this awful rate stuff is. We got off to a rough start this season, none rougher than Marcus with his injuries, but since the All Star break he's shooting 46.2% from the field and 86% from the line. The only disappointment is the three point shooting which stubbornly won't nudge much past 35%.

Even if you take his full season number, uincluding Westphal, including the injured thigh, he is at:

Compare
Thornton 18.7pts .438 .345 .865
JJohnson 18.5pts .443. .369 .863
KBryant 28.1pts .430 .299 .846
KMartin 17.1pts .413 .347 .894
MntEllis 20.6pts .436 .307 .795
JTerry 15.3pts .433 .385 .879

and just etc.

IN this shortened season of lwoered shooting percentages, Marcus is doing just fine. If you're going to dump him for scoring at an awful rate, then you'd better dump half the shooting guards in the league right along with him.

Why should we trade MT for one of the biggest busts in the last drafts and a scrub like ellington?!? Marcus has a lot more value, and I can see him having a role in a better Kings team, as a great 6th man.

BTW, I don't want to let JT walk. He won't be too expensive, we need to give him a new contract. I'm sure many good teams would like to get him, he could be a very good first big from the bench for any team.

We've got a lot of problems with this team, starting with the fact that we've got too many players coming back next year that we can't really get rid of but don't need (Salmons, Garcia, Outlaw). Dumping Thornton for two more in Johnson and Ellington would be silly.

If we trade Thornton, we need to trade him for value, not give him away.

Saw a story yesterday, forgot where, that said once again Philly will do anything possible to trade Iggy this summer. Now, I'm all for including MT in a package for a player like Iggy who'd really help this team and is the type of player at SF we could really use.

I'd think Philly would be interested as one of the areas they struggle is who can they go to at the end of close games? They score by committee, which can be great, but can also hurt you at the end of games. A clutch SG, who can put up 20 a night, and who's poor defense can be somewhat covered in Philly, would probably help.

But this proposed deal? No.

This thread is weird because Thornton is being vastly underrated and overrated at the same time.

He's an inefficient scorer that really doesn't do much else. That's why bringing up guys like Kobe and Monta is unfair because they fill up the statsheet. And looking up his advanced stats like PER and TS% makes MT more of a match for a guy like Joe Johnson, with maybe slightly less range. Which demonstrates both that MT is good but not THAT good and that Johnson is horribly overpaid.

And that's the other thing: MT's contract is more than reasonable for his production.

I certainly don't think he's untradeable, but you can get more than spare parts for him.

But some of the posts in here seem to infer that he's a near all-star that would command top value back; if I were a Bulls fan I'd lol at the idea of giving up Taj Gibson in return too.

Bottomline: He's young, productive, reasonably compensated, and would be effective even in a more limited role. So unless you're getting a Kings ransom in return (see what I did there?) - and that's probably not going to happen - then why bother?

Phoenix could definitely use a number one scorer. I'd trade Thornton for Dudley and filler without blinking.
Then we can be done with the Tyreke at the 3 nonsense, and maybe get more PT for Terrence Williams in the backcourt, so we can utilize this team's size a little.

IT/Reke/Dudley/Rookie/Cuz
Jimmer/TWill/Filler/Hayes/JT

That is a balanced lineup that can flirt with a playoff spot.

You could even swap Jimmer and IT if Jimmer steps up his D and you want IT's energy off the bench. Reke will have chances to handle the ball and have at least 2 respectable shooters to kick out to.
Bench scoring might be an issue, but not a huge deal considering you can mix and match players.

No offense but I'm pretty sure that the simple act of reading this just brought my IQ down to third grade levels at best.
