I think there's also something to be said for the idea that maybe they wanted to do it while all thirty teams were still engaged, and trying to be competitive. Contrary to what some might tell you, nobody's actually trying to tank in Game #8 of the season.

I guess the counter-argument is that you don't need to make already competitive games in the first weeks of the season into a tournament. How about doing that just when some teams might start to consider tanking (say, 1/3 to 1/2 way through) instead? Kick some extra pep into those games in January (or so) that otherwise aren't always on everyone's radar and make them mean a little more?

I've thought about that too.

Tourney might be better further along the season to kind of lessen that giant gap we're still going to have between tourney and playoffs
