Toney Douglas

quote from his postgame interview makes me like him even more. this is the type of guy we need at PG on this team.

"i just pick my spots, i dont really care about scoring, and there are plenty of great scorers on this team"

Yes.

Can we keep him? Please? Please?

Very up in the air with him and Aldrich. They are FAs of little repute, and you just don't know who is going to be running this franchise in a couple of months. These are the type of defensive minded roleplayers I have been calling for for years, but in semi-typical Petrie fashion, they are short timers, and we'll need the right GM, who hopefully is already watching the team in preparation, to bring them back.

best fourth quarter of any King in loooooong time. he's been a very nice addition and the fact that he seems to establish chemistry with Thornton (who both gave up open threes for an even more open three by the other several times) makes it even better. it's be nice if the Kings gave him a shot going beyond this year.

No. Why do we need to trade Thompson, exactly?

the kings do not need to trade jason thompson. but i am not convinced that either thompson or patterson is the right starting PF next to demarcus cousins. they may not necessarily be the wrong PF next to him, but if the kings could acquire a defensive-minded PF who will consistently contest in the paint, block the occasional shot, and set hard screens, then i think we're closer to where we need to be. in such a scenario, one of patterson and thompson becomes expendable in the name of acquiring further pieces that fit. i like either of them off the bench, but i certainly wouldn't mind parting with thompson if his value as a serviceable PF netted us the right player in return (like, say, a true starting caliber SF)...

Thompson is at his best when he's just playing hard without demanding the ball. Too often we've been trying to have him post up to score. Just let him stick to rebounding (which he's been doing a shoddy job of last few games) and scoring on easy shots around the basket or open 12 fters. The Udonis Haslem role, basically. And teach him how to set a screen for goodness sake. JJ Barea sets better screens than JT.

on a separate note, this lingering feeling keeps nagging at me that toney douglas' level of play since being traded to sacramento is fool's gold. he hasn't been anything more than a 12th man type anywhere he's played. he's been terribly inefficient from the field (40% for his career). nothing about his resume is particularly distinguished. but goddamn i've enjoyed watching him play in a kings uni so far. he competes. he picks his spots. he moves the ball. he plays defense. if the kings can lock him up on the cheap, i'd love to see him break out next season. and if he doesn't, if he really is fool's gold, then you've got an inexpensive utility guard for the end of your bench...

I've noticed the defense, ball movement, and some of those little intangible things that some of our former role players used to do. I like the idea of keeping him.

For now im on the fools gold bandwagon but toney is making a real case for himself, I was in the group that was floored by MT when he arrived and felt he was the starting SG of our future but was wrong on that one and this kind of reminds me of that situation, sometimes a trade can cause a player to play out of his mind temporarly but eventually teams notice and bring them back down to earth. I remember reading on the knicks boards on how much douglas would hurt them when he was on the court, His bad play gave Lin his chance in NY, patrick beverly got burn over him in houston, I think he just wants to be in the NBA next year and not have to play in china.

I would bring Aldrich back just because we lack size and hes a big body at the end of the bench who plays with hustle and sets hard screens but ill pass on douglas and wouldnt be hurt if aldrich isnt resigned.

Douglas's mindset has been well.. mind-boggling. He was a volume scorer in college. He chucked with very little success in NYK. Where did this beastly defensive talent (allowing opponents to shoot 25% with us) come form?

I really hope his play isn't a fluke

i certainly couldn't tell ya. and given that the season is already lost, i'd be tempted to give douglas an extended look as a starter alongside tyreke evans. if douglas' defensive intensity isn't a fluke, then you've got a strong pair of on-ball defenders anchoring your defense out at the wing. i find that i prefer such a prospect infinitely more than a backcourt that starts any of isaiah thomas, marcus thornton, or jimmer fredette next to tyreke...

I think its pretty clear a defensive minded guard that can hit the long ball was just what the doctor ordered here. As for the trade JT comment I made earlier in the thread about JT I stand by it. Lets say hypothetically the kings pick is outside of the top four or five why not use JT and the pick to try to acquire a SF and then go sign Dally to shore up our front court?

It sometimes takes a PG 4 or 5 years to really figure it out. Add in, that Douglas hasn't been on a team yet where he had a legit chance of becoming a starter. He could be fools gold, but he also might be starting to put it together. No offense to Jimmer or IT, but I'd say the door is wide open for Douglas to impress, and just maybe take the starting job away from IT.

I know this doesn't mean anything for a lot of people, but he came out of Florida St. And if you play at that school, defense comes first. I agree that at Florida St. he was used more as a SG than a PG, and I think that hurt his developement. But he's always been a good defender. He wasn't a bad shooter in college averaging around 37 to 38 percent from the three. From watching him, I can see he has PG skills, so just maybe he's figured out that to stay in this league, thats the direction he has to go. If you can sign him to a reasonable contract, I don't see how it can hurt you. At worse, you have someone you can put in when you need a stop. Lets not forget that Jeremy Lin bounced around too, until he finally put it together, and also got the chance to show his ability.
