Title IX's 35th Birthday Today! (non-Monarchs)

#1
Today is the 35th anniversary of the passing of the landmark legislation Title IX . I competed in sports both pre-Title IX and post Title IX, and hope that old & new generations of female and male athletes remember how important it is to protect this landmark legislation. Mechelle Voepel has a great article up on espn.com on Title IX. Be sure to check it out.

I celebrated Title IX's 35th Birthday this morning by going to a friend's
4 year-old daughter's soccer game. As I helped her put on her soccer
cleats and shin guards I told her "it was someone's birthday today." She
asked "Who Den-Den?" I told her "Title IX." She asked "what is that?" And
I told her "it is a law that says girls get to have the same things in
sports and school as boys do." She looked at her mother and said "Mama why
do we have to have that?" Her mother replied "because some people think
that girls should not play sports."

She furrowed her eyebrows and said "that's just stupid".

From the mouths of babes...
