Timberwolves buying out Kevin Martin

#4
Get him here PRONTO!

Talk about the obvious desperation move - it's so obvious, I don't really see how the Kings FO can NOT do it.

Oh, wait - they may still be actually listening to delusional George Karl and waiting for Marco's spirit to re-inhabit his rotten, stinking corpse.

I'm guessing Martin would be a good fit for Karl's offense. He's a good spot up shooter and he's good at attacking close outs or open lanes to attack the basket to finish and/or get to the line.

He'd be a step down from McLemore defensively (though maybe a tick above Marco) but I think he'd provide much needed floor spacing for Cuz to operate.

I'm guessing a number of playoff teams would be happy to add him as a bench player but the Kings might be in the best position because I think Martin wants a starting role more than to be a 10 mpg player on a a contender.

Yeah, this is one we really should do. Giving up an "asset" for him was dicey (not that our assets are so assety) , but picking him up for near free when our SGs are in straight freefall and we are trying to make a push? We should make that call.

And remember that he had a player option for something around $7M for next year that the Wolves will have to pay off. We would have been stuck with the bill on that one if we had traded for him. At this point it's a no brainer to pick him up if he's willing to come. The only question is who we drop to make the roster space. If we do pick him up, it will tell us just what Vlade thinks of Dukan - he's the obvious cut with Butler and Anderson having small player options next year that we'd be on the hook for. But if we ate money to hold onto Dukan...actually now that I think about it Moreland would probably be the guy. With WCS on board there's no room for him, and he's out for the year with no guaranteed money next year.

Please get this done, Vlade.

Not only was he a good King, he's only a year removed from being a back to back 20 ppg guy.

This would be great for both parties.

I mean I guess if he cannot sign with a contender he would sign here. Convince me he would choose the Kings over say the Cavs?
Roll and min. If the Cavs pick him it it will be as insurance and he will hope to see 10 min a game. In Sac he is a hero and walks into a starting role.

Kevin's two options...

  • maybe get a dozen minutes or so on a contender and lower your value to in the process

or...

  • Go back to the team that drafted you where you had your best years
  • Start right out the gate with 20+ minutes a game
  • Play along side a pass first point guard who leads the league in assists
  • Get wide open looks nightly with DMC constantly drawing the defense

The "Make the playoffs" vs. "Probably miss the playoffs" equation will likely factor in to his decision. We are an attractive option...if no playoff teams come knocking at his door. If some do, then we may be the bridesmaid on this one.

I hear you.
It just sucks that any one of Thornton, Martin and Johnson would immediately take our offense from 4 on 5 to a much more complete offense alleviating quite a bit of pressure.

I'm not getting my hopes up though. We're not signing any of these guys.

If you omit this season, Kmart was putting up decent numbers and shot close to 40% in 3s the previous 2 years. One thing is he knows how to score and draw fouls and shoot the long ball. We need someone like that. His D cannot be worse than Belli's

Eh, has anyone looked at his shooting numbers this season? George Karl isn't going to bench Marco, he's going to bench Ben. So we'd have two SGs playing shaky defense and shooting 38% from the floor. I like the idea of bringing him back home to close out his career, but I don't think it makes sense anymore in our current situation. He's not a clear upgrade based on what he's done this season and we don't need more uncertainty while we attempt to make up 4 games and get into the playoffs.

LOL. I love the attitude of Kings fans. :)

Kevin Martin wouldn't have to talk us into taking him as much as we'd have to do an incredible sales pitch getting him to come here, especially after all the drama that's gone on lately. There were a lot of rumors that he was interested in possibly coming back to Sacramento to finish his career but that's before we became the laughing stock of the league.

It's not about Kevin Martin the person. I don't think he's a good fit for us on the court right now and we're trying to make the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, so the fit on the court is what matters. I don't mean to be a naysayer -- I agree that there are some feel good implications there that would be good for us and we are weak at SG. In this case though, looking at what we can reasonably expect from Kevin Martin the rest of this season, I just don't think it's a smart move for us. I feel like people are letting the emotions attached to Kevin Martin as a former King and the player he used to be overshadow the reality that he hasn't been very good this year. At his best he was a scorer who didn't impact the game much defensively so he's not even the right type of player we should be looking for.

Sooooooo, you would rather keep throwing Belinelli out there for defensive purposes, since he can't score a lick.

This all comes down to how actively Vlade goes at this and how well he pitches.

He needs to absolutely hound Kevin here. He needs to get Rick to give him a call too and Peja. George Karl even.

What ever the hell it takes. Get boogie involved.

We need that SG void filled.

If we get Kmart back and he stays healthy we will make the playoffs

No, I would rather we find a small island somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and drop Belinelli off there until the season is over. If he can swim back by next October, mmmmaybe we let him into the new arena. If he asks nicely.

But I can also read the writing on the wall which says that Martin isn't taking Marco's minutes, he's taking Ben's minutes. How do I know this? George Karl has played Marco more than any of the other SGs on the roster even though he's been the worst one by far. As Marco's shooting percentage continues to plummet, it's Ben who's playing less and less. The swap isn't KMart for Belinelli -- I would take that even at Kevin's reduced production this year. It's KMart for Ben which means we get worse defensively in the swap and might not get better offensively either considering Ben is at 44% for the season and Kevin is at 38%.

K-Mart is done. We have no reason to bring him back. What does he offer to this team? Defense? No.

Do we really need more offense? Imagine a Rondo-Martin back court... K-mart is not nearly the player he used to be. Time to move on.

We actually do need more offense, and specifically a SG who actually scores points.

Alas, this may be his best chance to try to ring chase.

Peja was a teammate. So was Corliss, Doug, Bobby, Omri.

This is home, NBA wise. Its just that this silly midseason drop process is really about the rich getting richer most of the time rather than teams further down the chain picking up guys.

No we don't. We need defense from our back-court. As much as I hate to admit it, Rondo's defense is freaking horrid. Belinelli is freaking horrid. Collison is not as horrid. McLemore is probably our only average defender..Curry is still unknown. I think his peskiness is what helps him.

Rondo-Martin would constantly get killed.

There's no surprise that Reddick went off in the 2nd half after Ben was benched for more offense.
