Tim Thomas will sign with Clippers... (merged)

Turns out, Tim Thomas wasn't as taken with the Suns as he claimed he was.

Jumping at an opportunity to stay home in Los Angeles and grab and longer term deal for more money, NBA sources confirmed Saturday that Thomas will sign with the Clippers for four years at the mid-level exception, a deal that will be worth as much as $24 million.

For the second year in a row, the Suns failed to sign one of their own free agents that they felt would be a slam dunk. Last year, they wound up trading disgruntled guard Joe Johnson to Atlanta -- this time, they get nothing back for Thomas, who averaged 11 points a game in the regular season after joining Phoenix in last February and 15 points in the postseason, including a huge 3-pointer in Game 6 against the Lakers that allowed the Suns to stay alive and eventually reach the Western Conference Finals.

Sources say the Clippers offer was almost double the Suns best offer -- believed to be three years at or near $12 million, but the feeling was Thomas enjoyed his time in Phoenix so much that he would take less money to remain and make a run at an NBA championship.

Now, Phoenix goes to Plan B, and will try to sign as many as three veteran free agents with the money they were throwing at Thomas to sign a backup point guard, shooting guard and shot-blocking presence inside. Losing Tim Thomas also increases the likelihood that Kurt Thomas and James Jones will remain with the Suns, joining the new players that come aboard to back up the starting lineup of Steve Nash, Raja Bell, Shawn Marion, Boris Diaw and Amare Stoudemire.

Decent move by Clippers... Suns lose another FA.

Suns wasted all those picks so they can have money to sign TT and others and now they lose him...I'm pretty sure now they're gonna go after Radmanovic

they are looking for a back up point? they drafted 2 then traded them... what happened to house? do you think they would trade house for hart...

classic tim thomas.

house is testing free agency, not sure how concerned the suns are with keeping him.

I'd rather get a two-way guard (whole handful of them that are attainable) before going after Eddie House. House is going back to the Suns or a top team like the Heat or Pistons anyways.

I wouldnt mind going after House, a lot of offense off the bench and we have been lacking in that area, but I guess thats why we drafted Douby.

Getting a two-way guard would be better though, experienced, can play defense and at least solid on offense. Compliments Bibby, like how Bobby did.

Assuming Douby doesn't become the full-time back-up. Which is not clear right now. I think you just gotta have a PG with some time in the league somewhere on the bench.

This is what happens when a team signs 3-4 max contracts! Kind of sounds like us a few years ago. Of course I don't think we had anyone at Tim Thomas' talent level but still.

Oh that's stupid. That's REALLY stupid by Thomas.

WHY in the world would you not give it a try with Nash/Diaw/Thomas/Thomas/Amare/Bell/Barbosa/Marion. Geez..if Amare plays like Amare a championship is almost guaranteed.

Hard to call getting an extra $12 million TOO stupid.

Another thing is the Suns look kind of dumb because they sold off their draft picks to re-sign Thomas. They gave away Sergio Rodriguez for squat! That guy could have been perfect for them. Their owner really wants to stay under the lux tax I guess.

Indeed. And if they never do quite make it over the top, he, along with a lot of fans, are going to have to look in the mirror and wonder what if?

Tim Thomas to Clippers........

Clippers Sign Tim Thomas

The Los Angeles Clippers today signed free agent forward Tim Thomas. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not released.
Thomas has averaged 10.3 points and 4.5 rebounds in nine NBA seasons with Philadelphia, Milwaukee, New York, Chicago and Phoenix.
“Tim is a multi-talented player who can play several positions for us,” said Clippers Vice President of Basketball Operations Elgin Baylor. “He is very versatile offensively and is able to stretch the defense with his perimeter shooting as well as having a good post up game.”
Thomas was instrumental in Phoenix’s run to the Western Conference Finals last season, averaging 15.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game during the 2006 NBA Playoffs while shooting 44.4% from three-point range. In the Suns’ seven game series victory over the Clippers, Thomas tallied 14.7 points and 6.1 rebounds in 32.4 minutes per game.
“We are extremely pleased with the signing of Tim Thomas,” stated Clippers Head Coach Mike Dunleavy. “We feel his ability to play as a big three and as a mobile four gives us the versatility that is a must for a team that wants to compete for an NBA championship.”
Thomas declared for the NBA Draft following his freshman year at Villanova, and was selected by the New Jersey Nets with the seventh overall pick in the 1997 NBA Draft. He enjoyed his most productive season in 2003-04, when he averaged a career-high 14.7 points per game with Milwaukee and New York.
He has averaged 13.7 points and 5.2 rebounds in 53 career postseason games. http://www.nba.com/clippers/news/thomassigns_060713.html

Many days old... but yeah, I'd say it's a bit too much for him. Solid move though, be interesting to see how he plays.

Tim Thomas will most likely come off the bench as the 6th man. He is going to be a key piece for them. How many more years do you think alien has left in him?

I'd say until his contract is up, as long as he stays healthy. His energy and passion will keep him going as long as he doesn't get hurt.
