Donaghy to be released after 15 month sentence

Donaghy’s release date has recently been in question due to concerns about his medical condition. Donaghy was injured during an assault in November of 2008. During the assault, another inmate claiming ties to the New York mob beat Donaghy with a heavy object. Donaghy suffered severe knee and leg injuries that will require surgery.

Let's be civil and not celebrate this guy's beat down, but that's pretty crazy to me. Like something right out of a movie.

i wont celebrate his beat down.... cause of him im convinced the nba is rigged one way or the other... and that stern is a big Douche

Yeah I noticed that too -- not a good thing. Got nothing to do with Donaghy, and everything to do with shutting up the next would be informant by showing that the mob can get you anywhere. If, of course, that inmate really was working for the mob and not just using that as a cover/excuse/self-aggrandizement.

theres nothing to be happy about this.. i commend donaghy for fully cooperating with the law which reduced his sentence...

imo the guy who deserves a beat down. are still reffing.... and controlling the league right now

it was a sour kingsfan that lied about having ties to the mob to cover up his hate for nba officials

It is what it is, cant feel sorry for him, thats how the inside life works, we all make mistakes and have to deal with them.

I think people are missing the subtext here -- he didn't just get punked in the shower. He apparently had a hit put on him by the mob, in jail. That's not a good thing for any of us -- its meant to intimidate the next Donaghy that would otherwise roll over. If the mob had its way, Donaghy would never have talked at all and we'd know nothing. Them getting to a guy inside is not a good thing.

This sounds like a mob ordered hit. But I recall the newspapers reported that any mob-ties by the two bookies who got sent to jail are purely imaginary.

It was a huge relief for David Stern and the NBA when it was revealed that the gambling is not mob related.

But if there are no mob ties, why a mob hit?

Just thinking out loud. Hmmm... maybe it's just a coincident.

Well, they did say New York mob in the story. And as some very vocal minority around here will tell you the NBA is all a conspiracy ordered by Stern anyway...so what if, just saying, but it makes perfect conspiracy sense...what if the New York mob = Stern's hit squad?

Ah!! Stan Van Gundy Killed by New York mob!! CONSPIRACY!! Ah Stern and his refs siding the lakers oh my oh my this whole league is a joke

I'm talking about ah - ah - a dishonest ref -- a crooked ref who got mixed up in the rackets and got what was coming to him.

I don't have a lot of compassion for the squealer, especially since he fanned all those 2002 conspiracy flames and brought the guys with tin foil hats out again for another run around the block.

He is paying for what he did. He's in prison.

What's bad is that such a severe beating should have taken place at all and that so many appear ready to say he "deserved" it. If he deserved that, hopefully, most of us will never get what we "really deserve" for our mistakes.

amen

going to jail is enough... youd think the feds could have given him some security due to the fact that he indeed knows something...

You don't think the gambling was mob related? I mean, forget what the papers said. That type of gambling, and it had nothing to do with the mob? And if not, then why is the guy getting brutalized by the mob in prison?

I've maintained from the beginning that, while I don't believe the NBA is rigged or that Donaghy's actions necessarily influenced the outcome of any games (win/loss), I don't buy Stern's explanation one bit. He was far too quick to dismiss the episode as a random and isolated event, "a rogue official", despite evidence to the contrary, not to mention the claims by Donaghy's attorney of a fix in Game 6 of the 2002 WCF, the many phone calls between Donaghy and referee Scott Foster (134 calls immediately before and after games Donaghy called -- more than the compulsive gambler called his bookie), and other lines of evidence that suggest that this was not just a gambler who found himself in a bad way with worse people.

And again, like Brick said, if it's not deeper than that, then why is he getting his butt kicked in prison? Who did he rat out that it was so important for the New York mob to get him in the joint?

By the way, look at this list of people that Donaghy has been linked to. No way this didn't have anything to do with the mob.

NBA Betting Scandal: Who's Who

Scott Foster, 41, of Silver Springs, Md., is a 14-year veteran of the NBA. Officiated Game 1 and Game 5 of the 2008 NBA Championship series. Friends of both Donaghy and Foster told FOXNews.com that the two were close friends whose families vacationed and traveled to golf tournaments together.

James Battista, 43, is a self-described professional gambler. He has admitted to being Donaghy’s bookie from December 2006 to April 2007. He attended Cardinal O’Hara High School. Entered rehab in March 2007 for gambling and drug addictions. Prior arrest for bookmaking in Delaware County, Pa., in 1996. Spent a few years living and gambling in Curacao.

Thomas Martino, 42, has admitted to being Donaghy’s "middleman" in the betting scheme. Attended Cardinal O’Hara High School in Springfield, Pa. Has no prior arrests. Worked as computer technician for J.P. Morgan Chase for 20 years. He’s now enrolled in beauty school, where he is studying full time to become a hairstylist. His attorney has asked the court for leniency in light of his previously undetected Histrionic Personality Disorder.

Jack Concannon, 42, of Glen Mills, Pa., attended Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill, Pa., and currently works in insurance. Placed bets on behalf of Donaghy on 35-40 games each season from 2003-2007 with bag man Anthony Rufo, 41, Battista’s brother-in-law who was busted for illegal sports gambling alongside Battista and Ruggieri. Concannon is a cooperating witness, who is providing the FBI with testimony against Donaghy, and others, and has not and does not expect to be charged with any crime.

Peter Ruggieri
, 39, of Glen Mills, Pa., attended Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill. He was Donaghy’s golf partner in West Chester, Pa., before Donaghy moved to Florida. In 1996, Ruggieri was busted for sports gambling in Delaware County, Pa. In 2002 he was convicted of wire fraud and fined $2,000 for his role in a ring that took bets on sports from bookies in New York and New Jersey. One of his co-defendants was Alan Denkenson, whose sports book operated in connection with the Detroit sports gambling ring busted in 1990, which gained media attention when former Knicks coach Isiah Thomas was subpoenaed to testify about checks he had written to one of the now-convicted defendants.

Joseph Vito Mastronardo Jr.,
58, legendary sports bookmaker known for his “Vito line.” He is the son-in-law of Frank Rizzo, a former police commissioner and two-time mayor of Philadelphia, a distant relative of Lucchese mob associates. His $2.7 million illegal sports operation, based in Montgomery County, Pa., was busted in May 2006. His phone records were used to identify Donaghy. He has served time in federal prison for convictions related to gambling — including involvement in a $50 million ring — and has multiple arrests for sports booking-related offenses dating back to the 1980s.

It's sarcasm. I do suspect it's mob related. But the bottom line is, I don't know. I do agree that Stern was overly eager to dismiss all other possible wrongdoing.

Yeah, I can just hear that phone call...

VF21: Hello 911? I need to report a missing person, possibly the victim of a nefarious deed.

911 DISPATCHER: Okay, what's his name?

VF21: Um, I don't know.

911 DISPATCHER: Where does he live?

VF21: Um, you got me there.

911 DISPATCHER: When did you see him last?

VF21: Okay, well...here's the deal. I've never really seen him. He posts on our message board, though, and we haven't seen anything from him - or maybe her - recently.

911 DISPATCHER: ...click...

Beware VF. you may be next.

David Stern probably sent the guys to threaten Tim Donaghy.

He is writing a memoir of his 13 years in the NBA right now. It is said to include things like how he knew the games were rigged and how he controlled the games to win 80% of his bets. Why would the mob care if he release this book? The mob guys that were invovled have been caught already and they weren't even real mob or big time mobsters.

The NBA does not want a book like this circulating. If Tim Donaghy has any legit info that makes his claims sound feasible, the NBA will be in deep shxt. Probably worse than the baseball steroids scandals, because this is the league front office rigging games.

LOL. Nice one, VF21.

See, and you guys thought I was joking when I said the mob hitman was obviously working for Stern.

Sigh. This is just patently ridiculous BTW. Over the top, silly, ridiculous. Yes, the National Basketball Association is in fact the world's richest, most prominent, undetected multi-billion dollar organized crime ring. And Stern is its Godfather. And all of this has been proven by...its referees sometimes making bad calls.

Help.
